What do you drive?

I'll have to choose a new car when I get to Canada.  I've no idea where to start.

I don't know what represents a good deal and what doesn't, whether American cars are better or cheaper than European ones, or what leasing vs finance will be like there.

When I lived in Germany it was easy - you bought a German car.

If Ford is anything to go by, they will be way cheaper in America and have more options. Only downside is that almost everything is automatic.

Both our cars (Disco 4 and M3) are automatics and I'd never go back to driving a manual.

Automatics are fine but it's not really driving.

In big places, they're better. got them as hire cars when I was in working in Aus, and the nearest town was 80km away, and Adelaide about 500km away - seriously they're the only sane choice in those circs.

Mine have the paddles on the steering wheel I suppose, so there's a bit more interaction when I feel like it.

True dat! On both counts...

Just seen that I can get an Evoque for less than I'm currently paying for the Alfa. In fact I can get most things over there for less than I'm paying for the Alfa.

Might work out alright, this.

You're moving to a country built and inhabited by lumberjacks. I'd keep talk of cars such as the Giulietta and Evoque to yourself when you've over there! ;)

A reckon a matte black Evoque with black alloys and windows would be a good look.

And whilst most of Canada is lumberjacks and bears, Vancouver is hippies and media-types so I'll fit right in!

I went to Dunton Park* last week and they had one in there, absolutely stunning car, top spec interior too, I don't even like them and I've got to admit I was really impressed with it

*dunton park in JLRs "top secret" showroom mock up, weird place, it's on a little industrial estate, no markings on the building, nothing on the doors, go in, nothing on reception apart from a miserable guard "who are you? What do you want?" Go through about 4 sets of doors, middle of the warehouse there's a full size JLR car show room, got all the top of the range models in there (and strangely some bloke polishing them, none of them are for sale) spent 2 hours in there looking at the building spec, it's ridiculously high! I think we're building the 2nd one in the country one erdington, going to be a very nice building

Good man! You'll get some abuse from the Audi clique ;)

Not from me. Not sure about the colo(u)r but in black that would be a fine looking car.

oh don't get me wrong, it's car number 364 on my car wish list, but it does have a certain cartoon fun charm about it

I suspect it's a lot nicer for others to look at once in a blue moon than it is to own and drive as a practical piece of family kit

and functional family kit is the new cool

Right now, I strongly suspect that Mercedes have some sort of subliminal signal / mind reading device in my car. A week ago I decided cars are just white goods and I'll drive what I've got until it dies to extract maximum value. Yesterday I saw a new CLA and fancied it, today I saw another CLA and thought yeah I might stick that on my 'must investigate further' list. An hour later I had a phonecall from my regular garage asking if I wanted an ex demo CLA for £8k off list and to just pop in for a coffee......

....not planning a change whilst I'm doing silly miles, but I might get a few days of free test drive out of them.....

Yeah but it's an American car and thus will drive like a houseboat

Myth.
Fact

Take it from somebody who knows.

Believe it or not you aren't the only person in the world to have driven an American car :)

Well it's not a fact, it's just your inability to handle a car. ;)
