Philosopher
Can't Benteke be a False 9 then, if you don't need to be a midfielder? He probably could, as in my view he is well on his way to become the complete striker (and occassionally he would drop deep and do this). But with his abilities I'd rather have him leading the line. CrackpotForeigner
I wish I'd never heard the term False 9. With four good strikers we're hardly going to be using it. Nothing to see here. (imo)
samjp26
Yeah, either way, Helenius isn't going to be deployed in such a position. He's a striker for sure, if we play him behind Benteke with Gabby and Andi out wide then I'd simply say we're playing 4-2-4.

(imo) I think we will use it, Lamberts a tactical manger and likes to change formations and tactics to suit. I reckon you will see it in the league cup or if Benteke is out for whatever reason. Rob182
I think Con thought a 'false 9' was the same as a number 10.
Con
Con where do you keep getting 12 players from! Also a false 9 plays up front ON HIS OWN and false 9 only works with 1 CF and that CF drops deep to make room for one or both of the attackers on the flanks! It's not 12 players, the unnamed shirt shows where Helenius was before he moved. Is this better? 4-3-3 with a false 9 Weimann Agbonlahor Helenius or Benteke Delph Clark Westwood Luna Vlaar Okore Lowton Guzan Edited August 6, 2013 by Con

CrackpotForeigner
Clark. ...One of the finest players of his generation. With him in the team we have won 127% of our games. Shall I show you a heatmap to prove this?

I agree that Benteke could also play the false 9 role. Con
Benteke as a false 9 wasn't just my suggestion. I agree with the person who said he is capable of the role. He has the passing and creativity, although this would only be an occasional tactic because he would usually be better employed in a more direct position. Here's another explanatory formation diagram of Helenius in the false 9 position. Weimann runs into the gap created by the defender who chases after Helenius. Weimann [/teamline] CB ?*?! RB Weimann LB Agbonlahor CB Helenius MID MID Gardner MID MID Delph Westwood Luna FWD FWD Lowton Vlaar Okore [teamline]

Con
Okay, maybe we've had one too many formation sheet recently, so I'll stop posting them now. As for Helenius's actual position, we'll just have to wait to find out. To recap, I'd be surprised, given what he's said in interviews about his technical playing style, if he is played in the traditional #9 role. That is why the "false 9" role is a possibility for Helenius. Benteke being able to be a false 9 (or not) is a tangential discussion, as nobody is actually suggesting we should play him in the false 9 role. brommy
I've had enough of 'false 9' already. I hope the term dies as quicky as it appeared.
