They just gathering dust? Something else you want?

Gathering dust and taking up space. In the unlikely event that I ever play in an amplified band again I'll buy something new.

Got OR100 #19, but I'm starting to feel the same way about it.

Though I'm wishing I bought a bass this time last year.

Would still have a two input Polytone, if I shifted the Orange?

I think I mentioned upthread that Mrs M has got into playing the pennywhistle (not a euphemism, so forget the Kenneth) as a lockdown hobby. This means I'm playing loads of Irish folk stuff on guitar as accompaniment. But the best bit is that she's become a bit of an anorak, buying whistles in different keys, upgrading old ones for more expensive models, etc. She finally understands GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), and why I like buying guitars.

The only person who may be interested in this is @tonyh29, but while digging through the mancave archives yesterday I uncovered the long lost Warp Factor Five (my old band) studio master tape. The current digital version was crudely converted from a heavily used nth generation cassette. This discovery rmeans I could have a stab at producing a better quality remaster. All I need now is a working reel-to-reel machine...

Could be a good hobby for you re-mastering  them  ...

Not sure if it's the same thing as remastering , but for a layman like me in music terms I'm still fascinated when I see isolated instrument tracks or  I see some of the tricks they pulled at Abbey Road during the recording process   .. Watched a great YouTube video of how they got Johns guitar sound for Revolution , by basically plugging the guitar directly into the mixing deck  .. the video then shows someone recreating it via software , which shows just how out there some of the stuff they were doing really was

Agreed, it's fascinating. But that's remixing, rather than remastering. And for that you need the original multitrack recordings. Nowadays they'd be digital files, but back then they were on 2" wide analogue tapes. The WF5 multitracks are long gone - almost certainly recorded over by the studio (which is itself long gone!), and would require a specialised tape machine and a 24 track mixing desk to work with anyway, so sadly, that's not an option. We did actually do two very different mixes of 'Where Does It All Begin', and argued over which one to use. In the end I got my way and the one you hear on the CD is 'my' mix. The other one had a very different sound, with more emphasis on the keyboards and less of the stacked guitars. I'd be curious to hear it again just out of interest, but again, I think it's lost (unless there are two versions on the tape I have, but I doubt it). The tape I have is the four track master that was created from the 24 track mixes. Strictly speaking, what I want to do is not true remastering, but simply creating a new digital version from that first generation analogue recording (although I'd have a certain degree of control over EQ, compression, reverb, stereo placing, etc.) But I don't have the kit to do it atm, so it may be a while before it happens (if ever).

These machines are mostly 30 years old minimum, and even at the basic operation level required checks and balances with azimuth and bias when they were new.

If you were lucky enough to find a machine that didn't have a million hours running time and was affordable? Other components, like caps, may have wandered from their original specs over time.

For a one off I'd be inclined to use a transfer service run by old bastards that know how to service them.

Yes, this is what I suspected.

If you can wait, I have a pretty basic reel to reel that works.

I’ve got a bunch of work to do ‘up north’ in March and April, from Leeds to West Cumbria.

It would have to be a borrow for a couple of months as I need it. But yeah, if you still needed one in a couple of months time.

It’s a pretty basic home / family / domestic piece of kit, a Grundig. But I suspect you’re after something a bit more ‘pro’? With a few sockets to have a chance of connecting it to something digital.

That's a very kind offer, Chris, and I'll keep it in mind as a fallback - I'm currently following up a lead from a friend of a friend who has a studio. If the cost is not prohibitive I'll get them to do a digital transfer for me.

As a former (not very good) drummer, I am mainly interested in watching great drummers. However , also appreciate great guitarists/bassists etc; most of my favourite guitarists are relatively unknow American session players. The likes of Louie Shelton, Dean Parkes ,Jay Graydon et al. However, on of my favourite English guitarists was Robert Fripp - he of King Crimson. So , with that in mind , here is a recent clip - my eyes were immediately drawn to that very nice Gibson Les Paul  !!!!!!!

King's Heath lass. Not bad for 62, is she?  :)

Been watching those Sunday Lunch vids all through the pandemic.

EDIT: That vid really needs to be shared in a more widely read thread. Cheer You Up, perhaps?

Finally done with my electronic/chillout album that I've worked on this past year and I'm super happy with the result. If you're into anything electronic please give it a go:

I may use that to treat my insomnia. That's not meant as an insult, btw.

not taken as an insult at all ;). the idea behind the album is for it to be a relaxing, meditative journey so thanks a lot mate! I'm glad you seem to enjoy it and I hope your insomnia gets better, having sleeping issues is awful. I know.

Actually, a Les Paul would cheer me up. But there were another couple of outstanding features there...
