Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is of the opinion that Charles N'Zogbia can be a “big” player for his side in the upcoming campaign.

The attacking midfielder, who has been out of action for 12 months after suffering a serious Achilles tendon injury, returned to training with the rest of Villa's first team players on Monday.

And Lambert has backed the Frenchman to play a vital role for Aston Villa in the 2013/14 season.

"Charles has come back from his injury and is looking pretty good", the manager told his club’s official site.

"I thought he looked pretty good considering the injury he has had. His injury was a really bad one. But he looks really good at the minute.

"He is doing great. Charles can definitely be a big player."

Lambert went on to add that defender Jores Okore, who picked up a crucial ligament injury last season, is looking “great” after taking part in full training.

"Jores also looks great", he added.

The manager signed off by explaining that he was also pleased with the progress of long-term absentees Christian Benteke and Libor Kozak.

"Christian is still doing his rehab and Libor is training on his own. The two of them are doing really well.”

So that's all good then.

I've seen a few potential starting 11s floating around with him as a Wing back. Has he ever played there in his career? Can't really see him coming back to defend.

He used to play there for Newcastle!

Is that the year they got relegated? ;)

Lol dont remember to be honest Amo69 but by all accounts at the time he was fairly highly rated. Went tits up when Bruce called him insomnia

He was highly rated when he played for Wigan too. Almost single handedly kept them up.

Just never seem to happen for us.

Another one of these guys who, on his day, is a pretty good player -- but it doesn't seem to be his day very often. If we could get all of these guys to have "their day" more often (particularly on the same day), we'd be a much better team.

He had two purple patches for Wigan, one before the January window when he nearly went to Small Heath and then at the end of the season before the Summer window when he came here.

Ever since he came here and got his pay rise he just hasn't managed to produce a purple patch.

Just can't put my finger on why...

He's obviously a talented player but I don't think he's really found the right position at Villa, or the right tactic, at Wigan he stepped inside a lot and either led the line or played the forward supporting the striker.

At Villa he mostly played wide but he only had good games when defenders weren't at their best and they allowed him to dribble, or he pushed forward. I always remembering him holding the ball close to his feet inviting a tackle, unfortunately for him most defenders made that tackle and he looked like never keeping the ball...so either the manager asks him to play this style, he doesn’t see it as a problem (which it is) or is unable to get him to stop, but what is clear apart from his ability to keep the ball in forward positions is that he/we didn't make use of his shooting and crossing all that much and we definitely didn't see his best.

I do remember at one point he complained about wanting to play up top, his favourite position, don't think it was at Villa, but perhaps he's the sort of player who is a little bit limited in certain positions and so either needs a better tactic or supportive players. It's a quandary for sure, and we're not Wigan so he isn't going to play the important role, but perhaps with Benteke we could get a lot more from him, Tekkers definitely has the ability to either score or draw the defender in releasing a supporting player.

He isn't good enough to base your tactics on playing to him or to pick players to support him.

And if that's true he has to go, we simply can't sustain a luxury player.

Just out of interest do you think Gabby is good enough? It's a shame we haven't seen him playing up front, he's pretty awful as a winger.

I've been tinkering with a tactic based on three at the back, wing backs and a kind of tilted diamond midfield 4 (with Benteke up top) and think he might work on the right of that diamond.

I'm not sure it matters too much where you play him though. Some days he'll turn up and he'll be absolutely electrifying and others he won't and you'll be tearing your **** hair out. But he's a game changer, definitely worth a spot in the match day squad.

I agree.

As for Gabby, I think he was but he hasn't been good enough the last two years and I would make this his last season unless he perform better. But agreed he is no winger.
