BOF Posted November 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted November 2, 2012 Ah, I liked Freddie Starr on telly (well I was only a nipper). Always thought his problems were drink and domestic violence, not that that's a good thing but it's a little more 'normal' (read - prevalent) than what J Sizzle was up to. mjmooney Posted November 2, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted November 2, 2012 Thing is, the witch hunt will now drag in any male celeb who has ever shagged an underage groupie. Which is probably most of them. Like I said somewhere upthread with my "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" quote, there IS a difference. If you're (say) a pop star, you WILL get approached by sexually precocious girls whose avowed aim is to get laid. Sure, we know it isn't legal, we know that you should be scrupulous and responsible, but get real, hormones will win. Savile would probably have insisted that that was all he was doing, but the evidence suggests otherwise - that he was forcing himself on entirely unwilling kids who were expecting something altogether more innocent. There will be others of that type walking around out there who certainly need investigating - but I hope the police and DPP use a bit of common sense. BOF Posted November 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted November 2, 2012 but I hope the police and DPP use a bit of common sense. The trouble is that law and justice are not the same thing. The powers that be don't have the luxury of common sense if it means ignoring that someone broke the law. And that's in normal circumstances. Take into account the profile of this case and any hope of common sense goes right out the window. Anyone seen to be in any way lenient will have their head roll. mjmooney Posted November 2, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted November 2, 2012 You're probably right. Let tabloid hysteria commence.
bickster Posted November 2, 2012 Moderator Share Posted November 2, 2012 So far the Police have played it safe. First arrest was Glitter which I doubt you'd have found a bookie to take that bet. Next up, the Scouse Tosser, the only other "celeb" to be actually named as far as I can tell, so it was a nap that he'd be next. It's the next arrest that the media are really waiting for, it is all as expected so far, the next celeb to be arrested will cause a few ripples I'd imagine and the media really will go to town on whoever that is. I agree with Mike, there's a world of difference between the Savile situation and the rock star shagging a groupie thing. They are worlds apart. I also don't see how Max Clifford can go to the Police with Celeb X, Y & Z are worried they might be under investigation unless he has some actual proof that X, Y & Z actually did something, which is unlikely. Seat68
Fair enough bof. My experience of Starr is that although he was a clearing in the woods he wasn't really a kiddie fiddler.
coda
Speculation that Newsnight tonight might be about a "senior political figure who is a paedophile". His name is on Twitter if you search. http://www.dailymail...-Newsnight.html
peterms
Interesting response on twitter to the leaker. Some journos saying he's put Newsnight in a difficult position by saying this. Twitter stream here.
peterms
...and apparently the Cabinet Office have been putting pressure on Ben Fellows to take down some stuff he's posted on the web.
peterms
Well, I was just checking for some horticultural info, but due to a typographical error, instead of typing "pruning roses", I mistakenly typed "operation ore blair". What a strange set of allegations I found.

peterms
Hmmm. I would have thought he was more into illicit cash, than illicit gash. He was, and is. This FOI request states that One Aide to Tony Blair was arrested on child pornography offences, but Tony Blair had the operation stopped before it could go any further because it would damage his party right before they were about to vote to go to war in Iraq. Ingram85
So did Newsnight back down or is Iain Overton a bullshitter?
peterms
So did Newsnight back down or is Iain Overton a bullshitter? Overton didn't say the person would be named. What he said was "If all goes well we've got a Newsnight out tonight about a very senior political figure who is a paedophile." If all goes well presumably meant legal clearance. Newsnight may well have backed down, though. The BBC is an altogether more craven outfit than it was before it disgracefully caved in over Gilligan and David Kelly. And the current mess won't make it any braver.
chrisp65
I got the impression they had one eye witness willing to name names, but the other (from circa 2000) couldn't be traced. One of their original problems with Savile was they didn't feel they had enough first hand whistle blowers.

peterms
Hmmm. I would have thought he was more into illicit cash, than illicit gash. There was of course that story about some bloke giving his name as "Charles Lynton" on a public indecency charge at Bow Street in 1983...court papers seemingly destroyed by mistake...perhaps some local rag covered it, if indeed "it" happened.
