TalkSport just saying Heskey and Lennon dropped, Defoe and Milner playing instead, like for like swaps.

What a **** joke!

U mean talk shite?

So what if its the same system?? Why not?? Got nothing to do with the system!

You cant seriously be joining Andy Prick Townsend and his bumming of Steven Gerrard in saying that we need to change the system.

No, they just need to stand up and be counted.

Playing Slovenia FFS

Yes.

Why tho?

Why are we giving these players the time of day? Il give them a system. Win the game, or dont bother coming home cos u will have succeeded in recording the worst sport result in history, and u will be an embarrasment to your nation. imo of course

The formation simply doesn't work - I can't see how you could argue otherwise. Gerrard does not work on the left he needs to play behind Rooney.

]

It worked in the qualifiers. How do you know that Gerrard behind rooney will work?

Based on the previous two games after, we dont need Gerrard and rooney. I seriously couldnt do any worse. that bit where Gerrard made an arse of a simple ball into the box when Heskey, lampard and Rooney waqs waiting - And the pundits/commentry still blame someone else!!!!!!!!!!!!! Corner after corner not clearing the first man and all they say is - 'thats not what were used to from Steven gerrard'. Yes we are!!!!!

Never done ought for England so why we think we need to build the team round him I dont know

It's been done to death on here already Woody, everyone knows it's a shit system with key players playing out of position.

Nothing to do with guts and honour and pulling our socks up.

Granted most of the players have actually played shit so far, but playing them in an unfamiliar position in the biggest tournament in the world is just plain stupid!

Who (apart from gerrard - who doesnt count cos he doesnt stay in position anyway and just runs round like a bull in a china shop) is playing out of position.

Like I said - worked in the qualifiers.

Typical England attitude - Lets find the one person we can point the finger at and crucify him. Robert Green (altho it was Gerrard who let Dempsey have a shot too easily - but it was a big mistake granted), and now the manager, whos using the same system as he always has. Why do we never point the finger at the ppl hu deserve it - which imo is the so called big players who time after time, system after system, manager after manager, never ever perform

At what point did Gerrard become a key player?

At least the likes of Rooney, Lampard, Milner and Lennon can point to excellent seasons with their clubs to go alongside their lacklustre international form.

Why exactly should Gerrard be the player that it all revolves around considering his mediocre club form to go with his piss-poor international performances?

Because the pundits are scared to criticise him - I honestly believe it and therefore ppl are blinded in seeing his very poor performances. He got a 7 out of 10 in one paper for the Algeria game???????????????????????????????????????????????????

So? He's still a world class player even if he did have a fairly poor season. Look at the Liverpool team too, don't help your own season when there is club termoil, your playing alongside players like Lucas, the team around you is doing shit, your favourite player alongside you Torres is out for most of the season.

He gets back to International duty to then be stuck out of position. Play Gerrard with N'gog, play Gerrard with Torres, there different players. Play Gerrard with Rooney, you will a see different player. They are very good friends and understanding between them is very good and it's potentially a great partnership.

How can Talksport know this when Fabio himself said yesterday that he wouldn't be changing timing of the announcement of the team?

Becuase of what happens in training.

If Gerrard is world class then so is Lampard. One is coming off the back of his best ever season and the other is coming off his worst. Why not play Lampard in his correct position and then worry about the player who is out of form?

They are very good friends and understanding between them is very good and it's potentially a great partnership.

Other than some theoretical "they are so good that they must become great together at some point" hope, what exactly are we basing this on?

No he is not a world class player.

Forlan - Yes

Felipe Melo - yes

David Villa - Yes

Fernando Torres - yes

Messi - Yes

Ronaldo - Yes

Even the lad at Chile

These are players who have or are stepping up to the plate on a world stage. Not a premiership stage!!

Steven Gerrard has had plenty of opportunities in his favoured position, and plenty of opportunities to show us just how good he is. Whether your playing right back or left midfield, you should (if your a world class player) be able to put at least 1 decent corner in the box.

At the moment - no player in the England squad is grabbing it by the scruff of the neck like Beckham and Hargreaves have done.

You reckon?

One goal against Germany a couple of years ago aside, I'm not sure what else he has done. Apart from keep nice and cool in David Villa's shadow.

Lampard is world class and playing him in a 5 man midfield like he has done pretty much all his career will help him. Defending it's 4-5-1, attacking it's 4-1-4-1 basically with Barry just holding, and the other 4 midfielders looking to support.

Also, I said potentially, not definitely.

I base it on. Both are world class talents.

Rooney plays upfront on his own for Man United.

Gerrard plays behind striker for Liverpool. Gerrard works amazingly well with Torres another world class striker.

Gerrard and Rooney are good friends meaning the understand of each other's game and how they play together is basically there. Therefore it should work, alot of good friends work well together because they are comfortable with each other's game, your willing to help out your team-mate more because you feel more connected. At any level because you respect each other more and communicate better too. Obviously it wouldn't 100% work but even against Algeria there were a few times Gerrard and Rooney did link up and looked good without the final product but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Good friends, good players.

Surely it's the obvious thing. World class player who plays CF. World class player who plays ST. Capello's thinking is World Class ST should play CF. and world class CF should play LM. :?

Oh don't worry, it's probably to fit in a world class striker. Oh wait, He's doing it, to fit Heskey/Crouch/Defoe into the team. Good one.

You might as well at least try it. Especially when your two recent results are 1-1 vs USA and 0-0 vs Algeria. you can't get any worse can you. :?

No he hasn't WTF. I'm not even a huge Gerrard fan, I think he's a great player though.

Name me how many times he's played CF behind a striker for England!?!?!? I doubt you could count 5 occasions in the what 82 caps he has!!!

The only positions he's played was he started as a more defensive minded midfielder. under Sven, him and Lampard played together, Gerrard more defensive. When Capello came in, Gerrard's always pretty much played from left midfield.

He hasn't had any games under Capello in his proper position has he!?

Doesn't make any sense. Players complaining that they never know what the team is until 2 hours before a game, Capello says that's how it is and it's not going to change but Talksport know the line-up 28 hours before a game based on a closed training session (apart from the first 10 minutes of warming-up)? This is Talksport, remember and as such, this has to be no more than speculation.
