Very, very disappointing, but not the end of the world. It's been a while, but I don't think I've seen more over the top fan reactions in my 11 years on Villa Talk. Yes, we were absurdly stupid for just under 10 minutes, but shame will get our players nowhere fast. We learn from it, and we go on. I can't believe some of the psychotic shit on the match thread today. Truly felt embarrassed for people. Jesus. It's football.

Just a complete shitshow. Ref worst we’ve had all season. Thrown away 2-0 again, Luiz booked with almost the last kick. Absolute disaster. We’re lucky United are terrible.

Why does everyone seem so certain 5th gets champions league? Plenty of room for that to go wrong still.

I'm waiting for the "5 years ago we were drawing away at millwall" posts that always come randomly to justify a horrific result

Actually five years ago today we had just won 1-3 at Hillsborough with Adomah and Tammy scoring very late goals. It was the middle of the ten game winning run.

I wish I knew. Maybe need to address the psychology of it, maybe bring in a specialist to deal with concentration issues.

I do think we lack a natural leader though. Love McGinn as a player but he may just not be mentally strong enough for the captaincy.

Truth is it may just be down to being shocking in defence. We've put so much work into the high line and playing out from the back that we've neglected basic defensive skills.

If only I knew the answer 😔

The chopping and changing of that back line could well be a factor. We haven’t had a stable back 4 for some time now.

We have the worst "supporters" in the league. I laugh in the face of anybody who left early or didn't sing unless we were winning if they are complaining about the money they spent on the game.

Your as bad as the supporters you're mocking with shit like this.

At last we've been punished for the ridiculous playing of one of the country's best centre halfs at right back ...... hopefully this may give Unai a kick up the ass. Every team starts with Konsa at cente-half without exception ...... move others around but to play Konsa out of position is plain stupid and it cost us today big time !

Because realistically it will need an all German CL final for England's coefficient not to be enough.  Although there is a risk that Man City, Liverpool and us will play a weakened / tired team in Europe because of the demands of a tight PL race.

I agree with a lot of this, but, "we learn from it". Do we? 2-0 seems to be a dangerous score for Villa.

I didn’t get to watch the game, but have seen the goals now. The defensive collapses are concerning for sure but we’re still in a good position overall. I’d have preferred to have not lost Dougie for Arsenal away, and I can’t see us getting anything there, but you never know. We need a reaction and we need to cut the lapses out. Great to see Watkins get two and a nice finish from Rogers.

5th place is a certainty if not 4th. Ain't no way United are getting anything above 6th. Europa League would still be an achievement from where we have come.

Yes but also a big missed opportunity. You can't just ignore or dismiss that because of where we are.

But hey, we're Aston Villa. Undisputed champions of missing big opportunities.

Barring a meltdown for English clubs in Europe, 5th makes the Champions League. The only country that can stop this is France which makes the Lille game absolutely critical to secure that 5th place qualification.

Did you feel the same when we beat Man City and Arsenal with Konsa at RB?

Or just reacting to one game?

I still can't believe the Brentford first goal.

Yes it was terrible defending but the ball literally goes in off his standing leg while the guy is taking an airshot.

Talk about unlucky.

And yet (as I will keep on saying) we have dropped fewer points from leading positions than any team in the league apart from Liverpool.  Yes we've scored a couple of late goals to recover (as have other teams).  But we've dropped 25% of the points that Spurs have from a leading position this season.  50% of the points that Man City have.

Our "obsession" with us throwing points away is likely to turn this into an issue where the crowd get nervous and transmit that to the players.

A lot will depend on the team that Arsenal field and the result of their first match against Bayern.  They'll have an extra 48 hours to rest before the match but hopefully they will be more worried about the short turnaround to the second match.

I agree. But what other choice have we, really? Some kind of mentality thing, that. Reminds me of Luton a bit this year -- and Luton have more of an excuse than we do. This have got so close to sewing up games then utterly blown it several times. At least Unai has a very isolated moment to study this weekend. The horror show took only nine minutes. What happened in those nine minutes should be pretty easy to work out, one would think. Seems like we need a proper right back. For all the shit Cash catches, missing Cash hurts us badly. He has saved us many times.

49 goals conceded in 32 games, we only conceded 46 goals in the whole of last season. We're probably going to end up conceding close to 60 goals this season which is awful.

Teams that concede that amount of goals just don't fulfil their objectives.

Edit: I'm not saying 5th place is below our objectives, it's still a veery good season, but it feels disappointing given 4th was in our hands and we look to have blown it against bloody Brentford.

If it happens it’s a combination of results not just Brentford.
