The Giant Panda does not have a diet solely consisting of bamboo - the giant grass does however make up the vast majority of it's diet.

The campaigns and use of the panda as the face of conservation has also been criticised as some believe trying to save the species is waste of time and resources.

As Ricky Gervais said.....we are doing everything we can to save the pandas. They're just not shagging!

Eating Bamboo doesn't give it enough energy to survive and yet it still forms a staple part of it's diet ... it's not the smartest animal going is it !!

matey boy of Springwatch said that the other month on the Radio .. i think his argument was we've been throwing money at them for years and they are still no better off so maybe it's time to pull the plug and divert the funds elsewhere ... wonder if he will be appearing on the next red nose day asking for people to help the starving in Africa ?

I wonder if anybody has considered supplying Viagra to pandas?

One panda sanctuary did start showing them porn movies in an attempt to get them to mate .. we never did establish if it was panda porn or not

Giant pandas should be allowed to die out as they are stuck in an 'evolutionary cul-de-sac', according to BBC presenter Chris Packham.

The conservationist, 48, said the species was not strong enough to survive on its own and it would be better to let nature take its course.

'Pandas are my frequent whipping boy,' said Mr Packham, a host of Autumnwatch.

'Here is a species that, of its own accord, has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac. It's not a strong species.

'Unfortunately, it's big and cute and a symbol of the World Wide Fund for Nature and we pour millions of pounds into panda conservation.

I reckon we should pull the plug. Let them go, with a degree of dignity.'

He added that money spent on the panda would be better spent on other animals.

The species is restricted to 20 or so patches of forest in China in a region densely populated by its only major enemy - humans. It also needs to eat huge amounts of bamboo to survive.

Wildlife charities rejected Mr Packham's views, expressed in an interview with Radio Times.

Dr Mark Wright, conservation science advisor at the WWF, said: 'It is a daft thing for Chris to say, and an irresponsible one.

'Pandas have adapted to where they live. They live in the mountains where there is plenty of the bamboo they want to eat. 'It's like saying the blue whale is in an evolutional cul-de-sac because it lives in the ocean.

'Pandas face extinction because of poaching and humans moving into their habitat. If left alone, then they function perfectly well.'

He added that money spent on the panda was often spent on their eco-system and so helped other species as well.

I for one think he's right. Animals are meant to adapt to their changing habitat.. Perhaps China's over population is killing them, but there is enough forest there with food containing much more energy for them to eat, but they still just keep on munching on bamboo, which to get the energy they need from they need to eat vast amounts of. Combine that with their reluctance to breed, even when in captivity and fed enough to supplement the act of mating, and they really are just doomed, regardless of what we do.

If it were a lizard or something no-one would care - people only care about the Panda because it is cute looking. Amazing how so maany people think they have a right to decide what should live and what should die when their opinions are purely asthetically based.

Yup, pandas are buggered. They're basically unsaveable. Their diet is made up almost entirely of a foodstuff they can't make the most of, while they remain perfectly capable of eating other things, that have more use to them, but they don't. It's a shame and everything but money trying to save them is a waste.

On the animal related trivia front, dogs are the only animal found to be able to recognise human emotion, and are also the only animal known to be able to respond to human gestures, particularly things like pointing.

Very interesting point about dogs, Chindie. Something I've taken for granted but it is quite remarkable when you think about it.

Coinciding your 2 points, sort of, Pandas are unable to express emotion. Their teeth are so big that they constrict their whole face so that they are unable to move it into any other expression.

Maybe that's why they have such crap sex lives - they can't recognise any "come on" signals.

The white bits in your lamb kebab are the alveoli from the lungs of sheep.

Nom nom nom.

Can't wait to remember that after a night out and announce it to the whole chipper
