France in 2018 although didn't lose, scraped past Australia and were far from impressive in their other two games. Germany in 2014, although did better, only just beat Algeria in the first knockout round and deserved to lose. Spain in 2010 lost their first match against Switzerland and were pretty dreadful vs Paraguay in the knockouts. Winning the World Cup require a mixture of good luck, moments of high quality and usually depth in your squad. You absolutely don't need to play well every game and steam roll past opposition. The are too many fixtures in a short space of time played at high intensity to be able to achieve this. If you rotate your squad you lose the cohesion and can lose to lesser sides, especially when you have already qualified, see France and Brazil. The lesser nations are also a lot tactically stronger, fitter and play at a much higher level then they used to. The majority of teams have players playing in the top 5 leagues in almost every position. Thats not to say we won't see a team suddenly pick up form and become favourites but its not surprise no team won all three knockout games as it very rarely happens. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
