Stadiums that feel dangerous

In terms of atmosphere, potential for crime, or otherwise hazardous conditions—however you want to defined them—what’s the most dangerous-feeling football ground you’ve ever been to, a place and perhaps time where you either didn’t feel safe in the stadium itself, or you felt at risk outside in the area of the venue?

Genuinely, the Sty.  I was 12 years of age and it was 1987 when I went with my dad to that horrid place.

Unwisely we went without a ticket and couldn’t get in the away end. We therefore had to go in their end and even though we won 2-1 (brace from Garry Thompson), I absolutely hated every minute. It was scary.

The ground, surrounding area and their supporters. Truly awful back then and probably not much better now.

Selhurst Park seemingly hasn't had a lick of paint on it since 1980s.

Never watched a match there but would be interested to know what the away end conditions are like.

Did go to Everton a few years back and while it's brilliant for that old school atmosphere feeling again the away end felt a bit haphazard with a steep gangway to get to the lower tier.

Not been for a game but Wolverhampton in general is pretty sketchy. I have been all over the world, across 5 continents and the only place I've ever been mugged is Wolverhampton.

My experience was pretty much the same as yours for this game. My dad took me too, but I was 10 and although we had tickets for the away end the stewards weren't opening up a section of the stands up as we had arrived, because of this and given my age, think my dad thought we'd be safer in the home end. Eventually got in (missed our first goal) but was more worried by the crowd trouble in the ground than the game itself. To be fair the Villa fans were giving as good as they got ! Never been back 😅!

I always felt like I was gonna get my head kicked in at Highfield Road. It was usually because we’d come away with three points, but the infamous ’Robbie Keane game’ where Coventry beat us for the first time since colour TV was invented was utterly poisonous.

Not sure about their new stadium but i went to upton park twice and it was awful, from toxic fans to run down area and stadium

It’s weird, it’s in the middle of a purpose built utopian village for the olympics next to a giant shopping centre. Feels a bit like Sim City. Just outside of that though it’s very rough.

In all fairness it was a dodgy long walk back to the station under loads of bypasses etc

That was a Monday night wasn't it? Think Gregory was on verge of getting the sacked but he survived.

We've never played them since they moved to the Ricoh and been a few times to see Walsall play there and it's pretty sanitized although no doubt they'd come crawling out of the woodwork if they drew us in a cup.

West Hsm 1978 FA cup, thousands of Villa down and filled the South Bank. However a few hundred ICF in our end all game kicking off continuously. Luckily they got a 88th minute winning dodgy penalty or it wound have been murder

Boro away was also not for the faint hearted

Boro away that brings back memories, I must have been about 15, got arrested on the train (for writing my name on the toilet wall, Yes I was a proper gangster LOL). Held back at the police station with some lads who had been throwing the light bulbs out of the windows. Then the 4 of us walking on our own to the ground. Scary but not as scary as having to tell my dad when I got home. Several weeks later we were at Birmingham magistrates' court £2 fine and my dad got a parking ticket. He was not a happy bunny

As an oldie I did the Millwall trip away in the 70s, went by coach, came back minus the back window. Now that was scary

Also found Forest away, the walk over the bridge to the ground with police escort was daunting at the time

I was talking to one of their older bods who mentioned this at an England game years ago Apparently they had sprayed Villa if you come you will get done on one of the walls outside the train station in Bermondsey. He said they got a lot of payback for the return fixture on the Serpentine car park.with a little Arab fella running the show 🤣 Just a little before my time

WOW I remember getting off the coach and sprayed on the wall was Villa will die and as we walked over the bridge at the station, the Villa special had just pulled in and their fans were throwing fire buckets at the train.

Pleasant bunch 🤣He also told me that the same year when they played Bristol city they cut a tree down during the game to block the road so the Bristol coaches could not get out, You have to admire the dedication.you can guess the rest as to what happened

Yep, very similar. We were silent throughout the game and my dad knew I was scared.

Never been back either and never will. I would never take my young lad to that place.

selhurst park is genuinely dangerous because the back 10 rows or so are heavily restricted view so people move forward to watch the game in the aisles, rushing forward when goals go in like it was a terrace, but with no barriers to stop them. last season when we won i'm amazed no one was hurt due to the pile up of bodies
