In a year when we're at the half way stage and 3 points off 6th, with both Liverpool and Chelsea having stinkers, why wouldn't you go for it? Next season if Liverpool and Chelsea get back to where they "should be" and Newcastle start spending like they'll be able to, the European places will seem very distant.
