It was an interesting appointment at the time. It didn’t quite work out but a foreign manager was reasonably rare at the time. Ground breaking stuff from AVFC again.

He was highly regarded by UEFA for his coaching methods amd preparation, was definitely ahead of his time

Ahead of his time, I remember a story of him at Villa wanting players to do warm downs instead of going for a blast of pints after a match. Needless to say it didn't go down well with the players at the time.

1st ever in the English top flight, now 30 years on I think is about 5 English nanagers left 

If he was alive Doug would be calling himself the trailblazer not Dr Jo 😂
