Had a very hard act to follow in taking over from Graham Taylor, who had taken us to runners-up in the previous season. It might just have worked (6 years pre-Wenger), had he been given a bit more backing in the transfer market by HDE (who had introduced him at his press conference by asking, "Does anybody know who this is?" He was the assistant coach of the Czech team that won the 1976 Euros after all, so he knew a bit about the game, but perhaps our players were also a bit reluctant to accept "new ideas" back in 1990 too. RIP Doctor Joe.

Very sad. Always came across as knowledgeable and a gentleman.

Was he our first manager to be titled "coach"? With Doug in charge he may have had limited room to manoeuvre. Not a bad spine to the 1990 squad with Spink, Nielsen, McGrath, Mountfield, Cowans & Platt. It never quite worked for him but like others have recalled, that night against Inter will long live in folklore.

RIP and thanks for the memories.
