Winter transfer window 2020/1

Thinking about the young players like Barrie etc ever bought recently, I wonder if that is where we are going with transfers and FFP.

investing in youth development is exempt, and I cannot find if that includes transfer fees on youth players under 18.

Certainly the cost of developing them is exempt so are we looking at fast tracking talented players into our first team and therefore giving us more room to go big on the transfer market for other players?

Say for argument next season Ramsey starts more regularly and Barrie is the next bench warmer to gain experience.

Ramsey essentially replaces Conor and we free up a space on the wage bill (a lot) and also we have a “free” replacement for Conor in Ramsey.

Do we then have the capacity to spend £40m on a single player for another position where we need someone really good?

with FFP we know we are constrained but I wonder if our plan is to build squad players with that youth (exempt from FFP) and just spend big on a fewer players in the market.

I can see us going for a big performer in the championship as one of those bigger players, we’ve done so well with Cash and there’s some players there blowing the championship apart.

Some speculation on Reading FC forums that Olise has a £8m release clause. Only speculation though. But we have had great success lately with buying players with good stats with experience from the English leagues, so would not be surprised if we are monitoring him.

From memory we have been fairly poorly served by the January transfer window in the past. I am struggling to think of too many positive signings. I can only really think of Mings, Carew and maybe Young who made a positive impression and in the case of Young he was pretty poor until the following season.

This year we are not in desperate need of anybody in my view. We are better off saving the money and using it more wisely in the summer. I think this is also what we will do unless someone too good to be true is a possibility.

Anybody else think of any really good January signings?

Everyone was buzzing the day we signed Bent and it lifted the team a bit even if long term he didn't panned out as we hoped for many reasons.

Not expecting us to spend another 20m on a striker but would be good if we could get a finisher of that standard from loan somewhere.

Team looks tired especially with no valid options apart from Ramsey.

Injuries, suspensions and tiredness will see us drop to be bottom half if we don't spend, we can't stand still in January or in the Summer.

Manure and Chelsea have spent billions over the last few years to consistently be top half, unfortunately that is the way of the PL.

Couldn’t agree more, we must spend and enhance the team from a position of strength in order to kick on and progress.

We have to make the most of our success so far this season and carry the momentum forward, we could really achieve something special. Really hope we put ourselves in the best position to do so and not squander this opportunity (that the players and management have worked their socks off for).

Having to bring on Ramsay and Davis speaks volumes.

Would either of those be getting minutes for many other Premier league teams?

Exactly, we can’t be giving these kinds of players significant game time (particularly Davis) in the Prem if we are looking to become an established top half or even top 6 team. They aren’t effective enough, we don’t have options upfront most of all - clinical finishing is what we lack most.

We must do business in Jan and in every window tbh if we want to keep progressing and be a real force. Keep enhancing the team & not settle for a lower class of player.

I agree, but if we end up finishing 10th or even 12th, I think most people would've taken that. For me, even though I think we could do something special if we brought in another 2-3 players, finishing anywhere above 10th place this season will be a massive success for the club.

Yeah I won’t be overly disappointed or critical if that happens but we have put ourselves in such a good position, I would love us to make the most of this opportunity and do/finish as well/high as possible.

As Nassef said, the sky is the limit for this club.

It will elevate us so much and attract a higher calibre of player, if we can get into Europe that would be massive!

I’ve so enjoyed the way we have played and the results we have gotten so far this season, we love to attack and 1 or 2 goals is not enough for us! I love it!

But we have to try and ensure we don’t fall away due to different circumstances such as injuries, fatigue & suspensions - and maybe most of all, a lack of options. We have nothing on the bench to affect a game... and I would rather see us take the approach of signing better players in certain positions so that (eventually) existing players end up becoming those subs who still give us an effective option from the bench and can be rotated without negatively impacting the team so much.

We have to be more clinical and dangerous and we desperately need an expert set piece taker, it’s something we are quite hopeless at. With the fouls won in every game (mostly by Jack of course) we have to capitalise on those opportunities and punish teams!

Let’s be ruthless!

We fear no one now...

I agree with this. 10th is great, if there’s financial capacity to strengthen in Jan to take us further a bit earlier then do it.

if it’s a financial risk then don’t bother.

Like any business they’ll be looking at their five year plan and finances. I do think January is a big month for us.

if we get lucky say and beat spurs and Everton. (Opposition red cards or penalties etc), then we are touching safety and another year of tv revenue guaranteed.

the chance for NSWE to bring their five year plan forward 18 months will be wetting their whistle for sure

Strike while the iron is hot. I'd love to see it from the board.

Cynically you’d just want to buy ward prowse, one of the best PL free kick takers ever and we have at least 2-3 per game he could go after.

obviously Southampton wouldn’t sell.

in other news one of my faves Buendia scored another beauty in the championship.

he’s the one for me. Gutsy, fearless, a bit of a risk on the cards like maupay but feel Buendia has more to his game than Maupay.

It's why losing on Friday was doubly bad. Had we won, the board would likely feel more compelled to strengthen the squad than they might now.

Nice finish, but that pass is giving me a boner

Yeah it’s why I’m still annoyed we lost. I hate valiant effort for nothing.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta could delve in the January transfer window to sign a new creative midfielder, and the Gunners are exploring options.

According to reports from Eurosport, the north London clubs are checking out options including Real Madrid’s Isco and Emi Buendia of Norwich.

There have been reports in recent weeksthat Norwich would be ready to sell Buendia for just £15m, with the Athletic reporting that he could be an exciting option for the Gunners if they look to invest in players with Premier League experience.

However, Eurosport claims that The Canaries want to keep hold of him. It would take at least £25m to lure him away from the club. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal are ready to make any formal approach for him.

Buendia has been in impressive form for the Canaries, managing six goals and six assists in the Championship so far. He would be a superb signing for the Gunners who could become a long-term replacement for Mesut Ozil.

Other targets for Arsenal

Arsenal looked at Houssem Aouar in the summer, but he is expected to remain at Lyon.

Isco has been struggling for game time at Madrid, and he is open to the idea of moving to the Premier League. Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt is being explored, but chances are unlikely that the Gunners would be able to lure him away from the German club during the middle of the season.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have secured back to back wins, and will be looking to make it three in in a row when they face West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

this article outlines £15m in the summer and circa £25m for Buendia in Jan.

given his performances and his work rate £25m higher than we should pay. If We could for £20m I think it’s worth it.

ive seen a few Norwich games on tv and Reading too. Buendia has been the stand out player for those two clubs.

he’s a wide player and if Benhrama can do a job this guy can be better for sure

We could do with a dead ball specialist who is also a good player generally.

If we had someone who could curl free kicks in to the top corner from 18-25 yards we would be deadly.

Tbh I'm surprised grealish doesn't have this in his locker..... ;)

Now is the right time to strengthen the squad as we don't want to tail off in March like we used to under MON. The team pretty much picks itself except for the wingers. We need better quality in the overall squad to not only push players to perform, but to also allow us to rest some of them sometimes.
