E3 2017

Sony slayed. Their show was concise and focused. The show wasn't as hard hitting as last year, but they didn't let anyone down I don't think except those with absurdly high expectations.

  • Uncharted: Lost Legacy - The stream sound was bugged so nothing could be heard, but the game looked pretty and looks fun.
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn - The Frozen Wilds - This looked like Horizon with snow. I have yet to play Horizon, but it's nice to see DLC waiting for me.
  • Days Gone - This game still looks very good and I can't wait to see how it pans out. It seems pretty generic, but maybe its story is magic.
  • Monster Hunter Worlds - Holy shit! Monster Hunter is free from the grasps of Nintendo and it looks epic! (This is also for Xbox One and PC, not exclusive)
  • Shadow of the Colossus - This moment blew me away. I had heard on the grapevine this was a thing, but I was unsure if it would materialise.
  • Call of Duty: World War II - Call of Duty has gone back to its roots and it looked neat. Gave me World at War vibes which is good news.
  • Destiny 2 - It's Destiny, if you love it, you love it and if you don't, you don't. Everyone has already made their mind up here. I'm personally excited.

Sony showed a selection of VR titles. The standouts for me were;

  • Skyrim VR - Yes, Sony have nailed down Skyrim VR. Huge acquisition from Sony for that platform.
  • The Inpatient - A psychological thriller. This game looked very good, very dark and very atmospheric. This game looked special.
  • Moss - One of the cutest games of E3 see's the player controlling a mouse. The game looked like Zelda if Link was a mouse.

Back to the main proceedings;

  • God of War - This still looks super pretty, but I'm not sure what it's aiming for. The story intrigues me, but the game itself I have no idea right now.
  • Detroit - I think this is going to be David Cage's masterpiece. Everything about this feels like a culmination of everything he's ever made. I can't wait for this.
  • Spider-Man - This game is stylish as ****. The animations in this game are on point and the gameplay looks sublime. Super cinematic and so well done.

All in all this conference wasn't as good as last year, but last year was special and we're seeing the result of that this year. I think in 2018 when Days Gone, Monster Hunter, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Detroit and Spider-Man are all launching we'll realise just how good this conference was. Taken by itself this conference was the best conference of E3 2017 and I am beyond satisfied with what they showed.

Spiderman looked great in so far as what sort of image that game conjures in your mind. I do wonder how it handles in practice, though.

Become Human didn't really seem that much of an evolution from Two Souls, disregarding the graphics and level of detail. Again though, time will tell on that - does the story branch as much as suggested?

SotC was a nice little moment, but I'd love to know more about the differences. It wasn't that long ago I played the HD version, so I'm hoping for major differences.

Best game ive played in a while (probably since ni no kuni on ps3) ive traded it in but will probably get it back for the DLC

overall seemed like a pretty poor E3, not sure if its the early leaks and reveals killing it or there just genuinely isnt anything really exciting this year, most of the stuff seems like it was revealed last year and fleshed out

Yup all a bit underwhelming overall, Most of the really good looking stuff seems to be 2018+ and the majority of the rest is sequels/yearly updates. I think most games have reached the point now where it is very hard to be blown away by how they look as there are already so many good looking games around this gen.

I am sure there will be some more gameplay vids out over the next few days as the show starts properly and people get a chance to actually play some of the games shown but it all just seems a bit samey.

You know that most of the exciting/interesting stuff shown will also be shown at next years E3 and it is difficult to get enthused about something that isn't going to be released for another year or more.

The Last Night stood out as being something that caught my eye but other than that my purchase list for the rest of the year is :

Xbox one X, Wolfenstein II, Forza 7, F1 2017, Battlefront II, COD WWII, Middle Earth Shadow Of Mordor, Cuphead, South Park, Yakuza Kiwami, Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite, Life is Strange  & i'll probably end up with Fifa 18 too

A completely uninspiring list of which 99% is sequels

The only game i'm genuinely looking forward to.

If it's even half as good as the first one it'll be magnificent and a shoe-in for GotY.

I need a good showing from Nintendo to further justify me only having a switch. I'm fast approaching completing Zelda and have been holding off Ganon to complete all the other stuff but I'm getting close now.

Still not much else to play, something is putting me off going for Wonderboy, Fast rmx and Mario kart etc... Arms or splatoon don't appeal to me nor does Minecraft.

I want stardew valley but that doesn't even have a date.

I need games soon and with more to come. I want new IP's, new fzero, metroid prime, rpg's, animal crossing, Mario golf etc...

I need a reason to keep this as I love it, its a great piece of tech but it desperately needs to be more than just the Zelda machine. This e3 is important for Nintendo but I don't get the feeling they feel that way.

Detroit: Become Human is 20x more complex than Beyond: Two Souls. Each scene can branch upwards of 12 times based on choices in the scene, there are thousands of potential scenes and hundreds of potential endings. This is the culmination of almost 20 years of work for Quantic Dream and David Cage. Every game before this was to test out a feature or several features, but this game is the big one.

Would it be fair to say that all the David Cage games that came before this were 'the big one' at the time of their release? And assuming he makes another game after this, that that would also be 'the big one'?

Yes. If his next game is in the style of game he created and is even bigger and more ambitious then yes it would be "the big one" again, but I don't think his next game will be.

Detroit: Become Human feels like a game taking things to the absolute maximum. This is a game with more choices and more scene modifiers than any game we have ever seen, but that might not be a good thing, he may have taken player choice to such an extreme here that the story will be terrible. So I personally think and I may be wrong, but I think that his next game will be smaller and more focused, I really don't see how much further he can push this without impacting the integrity of the overall story.
