United looking suspect with this 3 at the back today.

Has anyone ever made that work long term? Apart from the odd game? No idea why top clubs try it, always go back to 4 at the back.

Brian Little did.
This is Other Football, not allowed to mention Villa ;-)

I offer in defence only my sincerest apology.

It can work but when the opposition press high up the pitch (as Southampton are) you end up with 5 or 6 players behind the ball and no option but to hoof it. Hoofing it can work when you have Robben up front, not so much when you have Rooney, Mata and Van Persie. For all their quality, there isn't a lot of pace between them. Falcao would make a huge difference if he stayed fit.
