What do you drive?

I'm quite anti VW these days due to some shockingly fraudulent customer service I was at the wrong end of.

But anybody that doesn't rate the Lupo GTI clearly hasn't driven one.

It may well drive brilliantly.

But part of what I like about cars is how they look. And Lupos look hilarious.

Even if it's done up/lowered/blinged whatever. I'd argue that would make it look worse.

If Ford made a KA that was the best drive I've ever experienced, I still wouldn't want the thing because it would be Fugly.

What I've found with most of the cars I drive is that I'm on the inside. To buy an inferior car, so other people can look at the outside, or so I can stand outside it and look at it had just never occurred to me.

Perhaps that's why I've never bought an Audi......

so you'd buy a car if it drove brilliantly but looked like a Citroen berlingo, or a ford transit, or any other awful looking car?

I drive this. Model and colour, not specifically that VRN.

Don't care if people call it shit, it handles brilliantly, runs economically and is generally excellent.

I think my car (BMW 328ci with optional indicators) will need a shit load doing at its MOT so think I might bin it in March.

I don't drive that much anymore... maybe 20 miles a week? Use the train Monday to Friday so only need something for the weekend. Which leads me into a two way choice of thinking:

1. The most sensible one - something small, cheap and economical. Low tax so basically it barely registers on my outgoings. Maybe a Smart car or a small diesel VW or Audi

2. The stupid option - something a bit OTT, considering fuel economy won't be an issue, however tax and insurance will be high. 911, M5, AMG Merc, Jag XK, DB7 or Bentley Continental. The last are at the more crazy end of the scale. I have always wanted a 911, so may be the time to get one.

I bought a 911 a couple of years back and have to say it's awesome. Still have it and use it as a weekend car. Firstly, if you're looking at the more regular Carrera models, get an 'S' or '4S' version over the 'non S' as they're much better.

Find one that's equipped with an official Porsche Sport's Exhaust (PSE) - this can be switch on or off, but when it's on it puts a huge smile on your face.

Depending on budget a 993 will cost you a fair whack these days, but will be a very sound investment (with a manual box). 996 and 997 models are quite reasonable now, again manual boxes are best unless the PDK option is available to you.

Finally, find a decent garage that specialises in Porsche if the car is lready out of warranty. Whilst undoubtedly robust, there are still things that can go wrong and the bills can mount up. It's not uncommon for a 996 3.6l model to have had an engine change (by Porsche themselves) because of a common fault - it's arguably preferable to purchase one with a changed engine than one without.

Happy hunting, they're great fun!

For the last 4 years I've averaged 50k miles a year in various cars. Today as a typical example, I've driven 450 miles and the journey home took an extra 2 hours because of an accident on the M4 outside Newbury. So if the choice was a gorgeous Ferrari that drove like crap and had stiff suspension and uncomfortable seats, or a generic looking thing with no badge prestige that was comfy, reliable and quick - I wouldn't be buying the Ferrari. No matter what other people thought of it.

If both cars were a similar drive, then I'd go for the pretty one.

I've had company Volvos and Audis for the last 25 years but none have been as much fun to drive as my 1974 Triumph Stag. I bought the missue a Juke a couple of years ago and it's so bland and boring to drive. It's the first and last time I buy a Nissan.

My wife had a Qashqai.  Awful car to drive.  Mind you, in terms of build quality it was miles better than her latest, a Discovery which has just been back to Land Rover for the 4th time.  Piece of shit.

I've owned what i'd call decent cars the past 10 years or so ... Couple of 328's and then an xf ( which I loved ) and I thought all of them were decent cars but the a5 looks fab and drives even better ... The xf was like Jennifer Anniston, great bent naked over your desk at work but not so hot when it came to taking her down the pub to meet your mates ...But the a5 just looks like it would not only take your load but also meet your mates down the pub and talk football with them afterwards ... End of the day its a family salon that equals a Porsche 2 seater Billy no mates car despite being a diesel and with room for kids in the back

Now I'm sure most people would pick the Porsche over an Audi ... But the Porsche is a god damn noisy and awful car , the a5 could invade Poland and you wouldn't care , heck you'd probably let it marry your sister en-route ...

Would I buy a db9 over the a5 ... Heck yeah but in that sort of mid

Price range that I've owned / would own then it would be the A5 all day long no hesitation.

That people driving their mums Renault Clit want to slag Audi's off makes no odds to me

Fair enough.

Your previous post made it sound like looks just didn't matter one bit. The above sounds more reasonable.

For me looks matter. Not more than anything, but if I'm spending the kind of money that cars cost then yeah, I want it to look nice.

Imo (and again it's only my opinion) Lupos look ridiculous, the gti even more so than a normal one, imo, because it looks like a chav has taken his meccano set to his gran's sunday driving car. And for that reason I'd never buy one. It might be the best driving car in the world, I still wouldn't have one.

Back to how much cars cost.

This might be a silly question, but as someone who's only ever bought one car, and that was from Black Horse, I don't really know how dealerships work.

These personal contract purchases (the ones where you pay a deposit, then a monthly cost, adn then at the end of the contract you have the option to buy). DO people like Audi offer those deals on their (approved) used cars, or is it only for new purchases?

If they do then I'd definitely be interested in a second hand car.

Stevo, most garages including main dealers are selling you a finance package, along with which you get a free car. So yes, you can get a pcp on a used car at a main dealer. What you'll probably find, from my limited experience, is that the apr will be different and you need to do some  maths. They want you to buy a new car so their business is perpetuated so the apr will be very low. They will however happily sell you a 3 year old car, but at 5, 6, or 7% apr. Now you have to work out if 0% on tha full price car is a better deal than 7% on a car somebody else already took the hit on.

Tony, the Audi comment really was only for you! I think everything they do looks really smart. Personally I think the A5 is the best of the bunch.

I've just been re reading my vegetarian conversation with snowychap, 1:00am after working 30 hours in two days is not a good time to try and coherently express an opinion.

Ta!

Yeah I assumed the interest would be higher. I'm just going to have to go in and chat.

You can get an 18 month - 2 year old A5 with less than 30,000 miles on it for under 20 grand. If I could get that on a PCP type deal it would put it back into my price range :)

I'm a bit obsessed with A5s, I must admit.
