  1. I remember going to a miners strike benefit concert in 1984 at Brixton Academy which I think included Billy Bragg but the last group to appear were Aztec Camera. For the last song of the evening Frame announced he was going to play a cover of a song which he felt had done more for women’s movement than any other song. He proceeded to play a cover version of Jump by Van Halen.
  2. Tony Butler BRBM sport was etched in my psyche for many years.Get your dog on its knees etc….praying for a particular result. I do think that we have some incredible radio output in this country.I don’t think it’s fully appreciated by the general public. My main supplies are Radio 4,6 and 2.My local BBC output was Radio London which was brilliant but has been decimated by recent cuts.My favourite DJ was mark radcliffe his taste seemed to mirror mine but he seems to have been sidelined. But as I get older the output on radio 4 is so superb, any answers , soul music, more or less etc etc Desert Island Discs is probably my all time favourite programme.
  3. Yes I believe many high ranking Nazis did escape to Argentina,I think Mengele was able to evade detection and lived there for many years. The problem with this programme is they have no proper evidence. The whole programme relies on hearsay and any body who was around in Argentina who had any German connections must have connections to Hitler. But in some ways it makes it more enjoyable,if they hear of anyone who happen to build anything around 1945/6 especially if it’s underground they automatically assume Hitler was hiding there. So they visit the dilapidated building and have expressions on their faces that Hitler once must have resided here without any concrete proof. Its a great programme to watch after a few ales. For me it’s the perfect late night Saturday TV.
  4. I would like to add two places that I visited many times as a child Blakesley Hall museum and Yardley Old Church. Both were close to where I was brought up and they were brilliant examples of places that preserved historical buildings in the middle of an urban sprall.
  5. My favourite programme at the the moment is Hunting Hitler on quest late on Saturday night. It’s a bunch of Americans who postulate Hitler escaped from Germany at the end of the war and ended up in Argentina. It is the most utterly ridiculous enjoyable programme I have ever watched.Tonight episode is going to have a photograph of Hitler in Argentina,I can’t wait.I know he is going to have a moustache.
  6. Yes agree the interviews seemed staged or coached.
  7. I have been watching A Southern Scandal on Netflix and having watched 2 episodes I have to say it is an extremely gripping story. I have just noticed today that there was a court case going on in last few weeks and has just come to its conclusion. It’s about the Alex Murdtaugh murder trial.
  8. He seems a much more confident striker since Emery arrived. He has so many attributes; he can run with the ball,he can dribble,he closes down actively and he scores. He is not a clinical finisher but he seems much sharper recently. For us he has done very well.If we were to upgrade it would require £70 -£90 million. What we need to look for is someone else to provide goals with him.
  9. Yes set list looks incredible but with Dylan changing the melody and lyrics is still no guarantee of greatness. Was that the open air concert he did around this time?I have heard from other Dylan specialists that this was an amazing concert.
  10. Maybe this is a more interesting thread.Great legendary gigs that were actually shite.I saw Bob Dylan and was seriously underwhelmed although he is famous for inconsistency.
  11. Funny to see a few posters suggesting Mcginn missing tonight was a reason we didn’t perform well.I thought many on here believed he should never play for us again. The chance Bailey had at the end...for me he trapped the ball well,he went round the goalkeeper but his shot was misdirected. I have seen many, many great players do something similar. If we want him to succeed we need to accept that these things happen and not dwell on it and hope it doesn’t affect his confidence too much.
  12. Couldn’t agree more.Bottlers and cowards? Its so easy to say.Are Mcginn and Mings bottlers or cowards? No. Do they have technical weaknesses and make mistakes yes. Mcginn for me is finished at the level we want to be.Mings I am not sure.He has been pretty good for us this season. One thing both of them can say is they don’t hide and they take responsibility which for me is very important. I do like that I can see some thought in our set up and our style of play.We have been in desperate need of an experienced manager and that’s what we have.We need to be patient with Emery and give him time to bring players in and retrain our players in the style of play he favours.
  13. Luxury.Pure luxury. Can you imagine if you were a fan of our neighbours who seem to be missing quite a few chromosomes. We have one of the most perfectly designed stadiums in world football,we have beautiful colours for our shirts,we have won trophies, one of my friends is a Newcastle supporter and they have won nothing for 50 years. We have intelligent and nuanced fans..........................................well maybe. Supporting Villa is a test,a really big test a bit like one of those SAS programmes where people do extreme things. But you have to endure because what’s the alternative supporting some faceless conglomerate or following another sport like rugby. As the eagles sang you can check out any time you want but you can never leave.
  14. It’s incredible how time makes things seem better than they were. I saw some posters early today discussing that Gerrard was worse than Mcleish,Bruce and Lambert etc. I am sure when things turn with our new manager as they inevitably will people will say Gerrard wasn’t that bad. And actually they would be right. We have been poor this season,Gerrard has lost 3 of his new signings but we have looked short of ideas and a lacking a definite style of play. But we have been in much, much worse times.I remember during Gregory’s later days we were appalling,Mcleish had some terrible performances and that period of 2 months of Lambert when we didn’t score a goal. In 10 years time people will be saying Truss was actually a great prime minister.
  15. I think this is a really good point.I could imagine him in a better system with better players being more adventurous. For me the Mcginn/Luiz midfield does not work.I am also not sure what his role is.He is not a 6,he can often make some great interceptions and tackles but is not consistent in this area.He doesn’t do enough creatively to be an 8. Its a shame he didn’t play a bit more with Kamara.
  16. You know when we are linked with a player or manager that you don’t want and Villa sign them. That’s how I feel. Luiz is skilful can pass well, can tackle and can take brilliant corners but for me he hides in games. How often do we see Mings playing out from the back pass to Luiz for Luiz just to pass it back to Mings. I have been following his contribution to our games for a while. Next game count the number of times he passes forward, tries to run with the ball or tries a difficult pass. You won’t need many fingers to count them . Mcginn for all his faults is always trying something and one of the reasons why is Luiz isn’t.
  17. Wow what event was this? Is that Bob Dylan next to Charles?
  18. Yes agree. The other thing that is not often mentioned is that Royal family members could stand in any presidential election.I would have no problem with the Queen as president and she would probably have won any election but it wouldn’t automatically pass to her children and she could be removed.
  19. Although for me the actual personalities of the Royal family is not the main reason why it needs to be abolished. Have the pro royal family posters on here considered that for 30 years Andrew was a heartbeat away from being heir to the throne. Could anyone think that King Andrew and Queen Fergie would be a good idea? The only positive about it would be that it might speed up its eventual demise.
  20. The Tate is free by the way.Like many art galeries and museum’s especially in London.
  21. I have mixed feelings about him but he is a very talented footballer. He is not a good DM.He can do it but for me Nakamba was better at the defensive part. Playing as an 8 I don’t see him creating enough. He has good close control, good passing but he doesn’t take many risks. He often plays safe. His corners have been a revelation but whenever I see him taking a free kick my heart sinks. Jack of all trades but master of none springs to mind.It may be he needs better midfielders around him.
  22. From my very limited knowledge of Crimea,it was only transferred to Ukrainian control in 1954 after 200 years of Russian rule. The major strategic value to Russia is the warm water port of Sevastopol. This port is crucial to Russia for military and economic reasons. For these reasons I can’t ever see them surrendering it unless there is a complete implosion of the Russian army.Considering they have large stockpiles of nuclear and chemical weopans I fear how they would respond.
  23. I didn’t count but I did think he did better than previous games. He seems similar to Mings in some respects he takes responsibility. How often does Konsa give the ball away a few times but often he just passes to Mings and he is the one who has to take the blame if he misses a pass. How often does Luiz make a forward pass. How often does he take responsibility?Rarely. Mcginn and Mings have many similarities, both were in the Championship with us and both take risks with the ball.Often they make a forward pass and it doesn’t come off but who else is going to make forward risky passes. I like players who don’t hide, who don’t give the ball to others so they can avoid making mistakes. Mcginn for me has been poor this season but today he was OK.
