I’d say it’s a little unfair to say we’re too soft, as I feel this is a massive area of improvement last season compared to the year before. I’d say the amount of clean sheets achieved last season would back up that point.

I love his drive, what a whirlwind of 18 months this guy has had! With the levels of the modern game, he is without doubt for me the best goalkeeper we have ever had. There is no real weakness to his game, and I love how much he catches the ball - I know it might not seem much but it eases so much pressure off of the defence, and with the balls doing crazy things in the air these days, there aren’t many as confident as Martinez when it comes to catching.

Would love to re-sign him but he’ll end up at a CL club no doubt if he does move on.

These are all very valid points. I can see this season being a season of two halves like last year, but in reverse - poor first half, strong second half. That said, I think a lot of teams are in the same boat with a disrupted pre-season. It’s just a case of getting on a run as early as possible. In some ways it’s disappointing to have an ‘easier’ 3 fixtures to start as it’s a good opportunity to catch a few of the big teams cold with a lot of them not fielding their best players in the opening games.

I just mean that our B team will be stronger than last years B team, but that is also on paper. If only football was played on paper?

At least with us having really improved the squad on the whole, I see no reason why we can’t be competitive in the cups this year? I’d say the FA Cup is the biggest realistic success that we can attain in the next year or two.

I don’t think it’s so much a case of him putting pressure on himself, as the expectation of the owners will be there. Im not saying they will be expecting CL football in 18 months, but they will expect things to keep moving forward, and European football must surely be the goal.

If I’m really honest, I don’t see Ollie posting those sort of numbers but there is so much more to his game than just the goals. We will have to wait and see how DS uses them, are they going to be a partnership? Will Ollie be moved out wide? Will Ings play in behind? I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s not a clear upgrade for me, not just yet anyway.

Tbf mate it wasn’t aimed at you specifically, but yours was one of the opinions that prompted my post. It’s all opinions of course, but I don’t agree and I think there are some short memories amongst our support. Phenomenal? Not for me I’m afraid, and that’s not meant as a knock on Danny Ings. Your post above makes it sound like we’ve signed Harry Kane. I just don’t understand how Ings is so superior to Watkins in your mind, I say lets see how they start the season off before we judge them?

So…..Nakamba struggles in 19/20 in a Villa team that generally struggled, plays pretty well whenever called upon in a much improved Villa team 20/21 and has looked one of the better players in pre-season, yet he still isn’t rated on the whole. What has he got to do to get the credit he deserves?

I’d challenge this view on the basis that DS has never played this formation to my knowledge, or at least not consistently, and not with this group of players. I can understand by all means if it’s something we start the season with, it clearly doesn’t work, we change it to something else with far more success, and then there are rumours circulating that he wants to go back to it, but you’ve just decided that it won’t work? What is your reasoning?

You’re right, and we’re starting to reach that point where the improvements aren’t massive season on season as they have been the last 3 years, I think once you hit 7th or 8th it’s a massive struggle just to move up 1 place season on season. I know we’ve got all the right people in charge of the club, and we seem to be making all the right moves in every aspect of the club. I guess I’m just worried about how football is becoming very ‘where we are right now’ and toxic agents ripping apart all our hard work because we don’t achieve CL football this season.

The club obviously won’t, but the team might. Will 8th or 9th be enough to keep Martinez, Konsa, Watkins etc out of the clutches of other clubs come next summer? I’m not so sure. For the record, I would be more than happy with that sort of league finish but just worry that it won’t be enough to keep the buzzards away.

He’s a young lad, they’re inconsistent. I’ve seen a lot of comments that he needs loan, judging by the amount of games he started last season I think DS thinks differently.

I’m not meaning to knock AEG (who is another player who seems to get nothing but stick) , but take away the penalties and Traore is our 2nd top scorer last year. Sure he is not perfect, but I would say he had a decent debut season for us. I’m willing to see what he can do this year with an open mind, but I feel I’m in the minority there.

It’s the just the way it looked on my phone was that Martinez looked a bit off centre. Probably just a poor attempt at humour on my part mate.
