  1. As someone who was there, I can confirm Mr Mooney is spot on. Perhaps one of the best places for Mods in the 60's was The Metro in Livery Street; it was a club under a railway arch and had top B/ham live bands such as The King Bees (Carl Palmer on drums), Shades 5, Cock a Hoops et al. I think Northern Soul came out of the second generation Mods but not certain. There was a good Northern Soul club in Stoke on Trent called The Torch - used to have a sew on patch saying 'Keep The Faith' ! I would suggest a couple of numbers as being 'proper' mod music :- The Entertainer - Tony Clarke ; Land of a thousand dances - Chris Kenner; Girls are out to get ya ; The Fascinations ; 1-2-3 Len Barry. I'm afraid I just live in the past !!
  2. In the Country that spawned The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream and The Who, I see that Zayn Malik has been awarded an award for his contribution to music ! Speechless.... but I guess that's progress.
  3. Am I right in think Benn is the only player, from both sides, not wearing a black arm-band out of respect to Richie Benaud ? If I am wrong I apologise but it would seem fairly typical of this yobbish individual.
  4. " Francisssss , super star , wears frilly knickers and a Playtex bra" Excellent.
  5. I think Steve Smith is also a more than useful leg spinner. As for being unlikeable .... I wish both Warner and Johnson were English ! I wonder if the Black Caps will watch a video of the Trevor Chappell incident in their dressing room before the Final.
  6. Yep , very sad; an excellent rock bass player. Always loved the way that the bass dropped in and out on 'Alright Now'. It could be argued that much of "Frees" success was down to the interaction between his bass and Simon Kirke's drumming. Another excellent bass player passed away this week; Mike Porcaro from Toto; his brother, the brilliant Jeff Porcaro is one of my favourite drummers - up there in talent with Gadd.
  7. re. Moeen Ali. Yep , he did get 100 the other week - but that was against Scotland !!!! His scores otherwise are pretty poor; he his not the only one of course but I just thought he would have done better than that.
  8. What a disgrace this team are; however, I thought Jordan was unlucky to be given out: I think his bat had been grounded at some point before the ball hit the stumps and therefore the ball was dead but I am probably not fully conversant with the rules. I also reckon Moeen Ali has been 'found out' to a certain extent; don't think he has got a decent score for a while has he ? Morgan was never up' to it, I always thought he was over-rated but .... did play for Middlesex - so that helps. I said earlier I would take Gillespie like a shot (he is even good enough for Warwickshire ) but I bet he wouldn't take it.
  9. I see the good people of Stoke on Trent have named a number of streets in honour of one of their favourite sons, Robbie Williams. I think it would have been more appropriate for Twyfords or Armitage-Shanks to have named a range of urinals after this talented musician and entertainer.
  10. I'm not sure I agree entirely Paul C. If I could pick one overseas player for Warks this season it would be B. McCullum - fabulous player. Danny (the Librarian) Vettori is still a World class spinner and Ross Taylor ,on his day is also excellent. As you say, they are well drilled. You wouldn't bank on us beating Scotland would you
  11. Agreed re. above. One of the Sky commentators - might have been Warne- credited Shane Bond with increasing his pace since taking over as bowling coach. Warks had Shane Bond for a season I think but, sadly, he was quite injury prone. Still a damn good bowler though. Surely Moores can't survive much longer - England should go on bended knees to Jason Gillespie (IMO).
  12. Slightly OT but did anyone notice a comment on 'social media' from the great Rikki Clarke endorsing Tim Sherwood. Apparently Clarke is a Spurs fan.
  13. ^^^^ apart for David Lloyd who is from Lancashire .... and Atherton who is a cheat (and from Lancashire) !!
  14. Brilliant post by Xann re. the steel industry - an excellent example. No. my post wasn't aimed at "going into the whole miners strike", it was a comment on our economy where it now seems that the old 'balance of trade' figures are rarely quoted. As we don't actually make much these days (compared to ,say, 30 years ago, they can't look that rosy and the altruistic Thatcher destroyed a whole industry at one stroke. I pass various coal-fired powered stations in the Midlands and they have tonnes of coal piled up; to my simple mind something doesn't make sense.
  15. I was watching 'Breakfast' on BBC tv this morning and they had sent a reporter to a port where she did her report surrounded by cranes, containers etc. In the background was a large cargo vessel unloading it's cargo of .... wait for it .... coal ; and the reporter stated that this was one of the main commodities to be unloaded here. Now with an HND in Business Studies, I can hardly claim to be an expert on macro-economics but do remember the concept of 'Terms of Trade' but this just doesn't feel right as there are large reserves still underground in the UK - well the North Staffs coalfield for certain. It just flickered across my mind that someone destroyed the coal industry for vindictive reasons rather than economic. Surely not !
  16. Polonius to his son Laertes in 'Hamlet'. Contains the classic 'neither borrower nor lender be'. or "What the effing' hell was that " - Mayor of Hiroshima
  17. ^^^^^ Agreed entirely but .... I'd rather have JT at Warks so we can push for County Championship ! Anyone hear Ricky Ponting's comments on the 'egos' in the England team ? Very interesting. Do you like mallards Rodders ?
  18. I see (Sir) Ian Bell has broken a record by hitting 187 for England in a 50 over match. I realise that this wasn't great opposition but still a brilliant effort and this despite Nasser Hussain and that cheating Northern monkey Atherton proclaiming that he wasn't a 50 over player and they wouldn't have in in their squads ! With that and Jonathon Trott's excellent knock ... a good week for Warks players.
  19. Blimey this brings back memories for me too - I must be up there in terms of age. So notable lowlights from that era:- match against Leicester when we scored a perfectly good goal which hit the back of the goal and came out and the effing ref gave a goal kick ! First match of the season against Norwich at home under the Doc when we were hot favourites to go up and lost 1 - 0 and went down. The Santos game - didn't they hire a generator to stage the match and Santos scored with an amazing free-kick from Edu(?)Signing Peter 'Noddy' Broadbent who was well passed his best but stuck out like a beacon of light in the Villa team. Do you know , I think there was more atmosphere at VP then than there is now !! RJW63 - much as I loathe the turd Francis, I think Franny Lee of Man City pre-dated him in the diving stakes.
  20. I see Brendan Batson has been 'honoured'; services to football etc. was it ? It should have been 'How to perfect the back-pass'.
  21. No doubting his ability; it's his arrogance that irritates. Other players are excellent but nowhere near as arrogant; say for example ...... just picking a random player .... with no bias ...... Ian Bell
  22. 'The Big Bash' kicks off in Australia today - not everyone's cup of tea I realise. The Melbourne Stars have signed the self-effacing Kevin Pietersen and he has just been interviewed; their main sponsor appears to be a car dealer called ' Dick Smith'; so Pietersen appears on-screen with just the word 'dick' visible in large letters on his front. Classic !
  23. and now Jeremy Thorpe ! His antics with Norman Scott in the late 60's /70's created a fair bit of 'amusement' in certain circles and gave rise to that classic piece of English "bite the pillow". The REAL reason he (Scott) had to bite the pillow was because he thought Cyril Smith was next.
  24. Anything but another draw. I know this might seem stupid but I think :- victories in the last 3 matches would have seen us relatively safe so no problem .. or defeats might have alerted the owner to the fact that we are in pretty deep trouble and action needs to be taken. Another draw leaves us still dangling and it will be said (rightly) that we are undefeated for 3 matches.
