  1. This could turn into a "Best of " and "Worst of" thread if we aren't careful. For instance, 'The worst of Steely Dan' would be a blank disc.
  2. Indeed ! This should be used with A level English students as a classic example of Oxymoron !
  3. I noticed that Amazon were doing 'The Best of Kanye West' - 50 track cd for .42p. I thought that was overpriced !
  4. Bear in mind that I only studied Contract Law as part of an accountancy qualification so am not really qualified to answer but ..... I think you will find that an article offered for sale is called 'an invitation to treat' . So you (as prospective purchaser) make the offer and the vendor accepts. The case I remember was Fisher v Bell and related to a flick knife. Hope that helps and is actually correct.
  5. I have a mate - Villa season ticket holder since the old king was alive- who was also a full time branch secretary for NALGO, then UNISON. He thus went to many Labour and Union conferences. He reckons that these Labour party members are not truly anti-semitic (surely that would be mutually exclusive) but are very supportive of Palestine which, it seems, is a 'cause celebre ' with a number of London MP's (in particular). I wonder if that is where all this stems from ?
  6. Don't forget that John Terry, Ron Atkinson and Suarez were branded racists for just one comment' as far as I am aware. So, yes, surely that was a racist comment?

    The Sidemen

I thought this was about session musicians too ! In which case ..... Steve Gadd.
  8. Rod Temperton - excellent song writer and musician passed away today. You would see his name on a great many really big hits of 70's and 80's. Wiki him to see the 'who's who' of music who he worked with. NB - no Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Vibz Kartel et al !!!
  9. Well Warks making a real fight of this. It would be a HUGE bonus for Warks to stay up and send Lancs down. I have sometimes thought Warks have been slow to sign 'big name' players but is there a better spinner in the World, at this moment, than Jeetan Patel ! I see he has been nominated for the PCA player of the year. Should get it easily but bet the geezer at Essex gets it. (Graham Napier)
  10. 'Neuromancer' - William Gibson 'The Coming Race' - Edward Bulwer-Lytton The former might have inspired The Matrix and the latter was a favourite of Adolf Hitler (I think)
  11. Well I did warn you dAVe80. They have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory too many times this year. Although he is Warks through and through, I think Dougie might struggle to hold on to his job if they do go down. PS Could the rain dance hold off until Thursday, it's the club training ride on Wednesdays
  12. Yep , Trott was excellent and so was Jeetan Patel. BUT ..... it is really the County Championship match against Wankashire that worries me ! This (easy) victory should be good for morale but I have heard that the ECB are requesting/instructing Woakes not to play ! Anyone know if this is correct and, if so, I wonder if Anderson will be allowed to play. Hmmm
  13. She was in the "non para" squad for the Team Pursuit in Beijing. In the end, they picked another rider which may well have been justified 'cos the women won Gold . Yep, you don't pull on the bars much in time trials and I guess the same goes for pursuit (I have never ridden a pursuit though) . She certainly is a hell of a rider.
  14. Although not the original either. "good Madness song" - oxymoron perhaps !
  15. Yep very sad demise of Gene Wilder who I thought was excellent. Don't want to detract from the thread but if you like the number 'Pure Imagination' then check out the Bob James version from the LP 'Bob James 4' with Steve Gadd on drums, I seem to think it was jointly written by Anthony Newley (for those old enough to remember him).
  16. Just an opinion but I don't think any Pakistani in the last 20 odd years compares to Zaheer Abbas. Unfortunately, because of my immense age, most cricket fans on here may not have seen him play. Actually should say 'batsman' 'cos Abdul Quadir (sp) was pretty damn good too. NB - don't profess to be an expert on Pakistani cricket.
  17. Well I'm extremely glad I got my predictions wrong re.our cycling team; it seems my source fed me (and others) the story that they weren't going well to take the pressure off. It also begs the question about Shane Sutton; was he a bad 'un and they all performed as well or better without him or did he lay the groundwork and the coaches had to follow it through. Perhaps a bit like when Villa won the European Cup under Barton when, I think it is safe to say, that was Saunders' team. Been reading the discussion re. power to weight which is very interesting. To support the argument that in endurance track events, power output is the key - 2 Midland cyclists, one from Wolverhampton, on from near Lichfield were vying for a place on the British Cycling Performance squad. The youth from Wolves stood about 5' 8" and weighed about 10.25 stone and had won the National 10 and 25 mile time trial Champs several times. The other was about 6' 1" and weighed perhaps 11.75 stone . They both did what was called a 'Kingcycle' tests to measure their output and although the smaller youth had a better power to weight it was the other who got taken on and subsequently rode the Olympics. Just out of interest.
  18. Cheers HV - that's fine, we'll just agree to disagree. The question re. being a racing cyclist was not to demean either you or your views but rather that would have heard how an number of these riders are often viewed in the local cycling world - 2 of them have strong local connections. Fingers crossed for the track squad.
  19. If you are referring to Shane Sutton then I' m really not sure that he was a 'rampant sexist' . Look at the success of many of our other fabulous female riders - notably the team pursuit squad. I guess we will never know what was really said and it may be that Mr Sutton wasn't the most diplomatic person in the World but we did enjoy tremendous during his tenure didn't we ?
  20. OK. First of all, I have no wish to enter into a slanging match with a fellow Villa fan . However, I must ask ; are you an active racing cyclist ? Opinions re. Cooke and Varnish are a little subjective so I will stick to the objective (as I see it) situation re. Victoria Pendleton. There was a documentary on TV - can't remember which channel on this lady who was, without doubt, a fabulous cyclist, possibly the best British female cyclist since Beryl Burton. In the programme, the situation regarding her liaison with one of the coaching staff was examined. There was nothing immoral in the relationship but it became clear that such things were frowned upon and I seem to recall that she was given a 'dressing down'/ 'telling off' by Shane Sutton. I submit that this may still have irritated her and may have lead to her critical comments re. Sutton (who used to live near the Beggars Bush btw). As I said before, opinions re. Varnish and Cooke are far more subjective so I will not elucidate. What I believe is not subjective is the immense damage done to British Cycling.
  21. Then I guess you don't know too much about the background to all this.
  22. This could come back to bite me but I'm told not to expect too much from the track squads (cycling that is). Hope I'm wrong but the damage caused by certain bitchy women with an axe to grind certainly hasn't helped. As I said, I really hope I'm wrong.
  23. When I played we always seemed to have clean dressing rooms. But we often wondered why blokes kept coming in to wash their hands !
  24. Yes , yes ; the England result is all well and good but - - - what the hell has happened to Warks !!! Don't like the look of what is happening down there.
  25. Never had you down as a Parliament/PFunk fan Mr Mooney but, yep , they were an important part of the music scene weren't they ? Had the pleasure of seeing 'Bootsy's Rubber Band at the Odeon, New Street in 1970 something; they were on with Ray Parker Jnr's Raydio. I have to say that I have never heard such a loud bass as that, it fair rattled the place. However, I am lead to believe that Lemmy (RIP) was even louder ! You probably know this anyway but did you realise Ray Parker played guitar on Band of Gold - Freda Payne.
