  1. Jonathon Trott to retire at the end of the season. Quite a loss to Warks I reckon; just hope some of the younger players coming through can eventually match his concentration levels (and , indeed , skill).

    Sneakers

The only 'sneakers' you need to know about - Possibly only Mr Mooney will know this number but this is PROPER R & B
  3. Herbie Flowers - top session man as you all have said; think he played on Space Oddity. Didn't he write some dreadful novelty song -"Grandad" or something. That's a fascinating video Xann; the names I immediately recognized were:- Brian Bennett (ace drummer with The Shadows amongst others) Keith Mansfield (his orchestra played on that 'Love Affair' number) and Herbie Flowers (played in 'Sky' with John Williams I think) . Classic story I heard on Radio 4 about The Who; the recording studio didn't think their guitarist would be able to nail the numbers so had Page on standby - but of course Pete Townsend was pretty damn good himself.
  4. Don't know if this would be of interest but what stories / rumours do you know about 'who played on what' - as opposed to who was supposed to have played. Perhaps one of the most (in)famous related to '60s band 'Love Affair' who had a hit with 'Everlasting Love' - session musos played all of it. A bit more apocryphal - Jimmy Page played the fast solo on the Kinks 'You really Got Me' and (for me) most interesting American session drummer Bernard 'Pretty' Purdie played or double tracked on some Beatles records !!
  5. Yep , a couple of million would do me fine. I could put a few quid to it and pay my wife's credit card bill off.
  6. OK then 'Peg' from AJA. Seen SD 3 times but not with Chuck Rainey - another ace player called Freddie Washington. If you can see the 'AJA' DVD there is classic stuff from Rainey on that - a bit about NOT slapping on the record !! NB - I don't think I could play ANYTHING from AJA on drums !!!!
  7. That's ace JoshVilla but as a (former) mere drummer have a listen to the following bassists.:- Larry Graham,(Graham Central Station) Victor Wooten (various+ session), Stanley Clarke (Return to Forever) and Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan ' natch ). You may, of course, know all these geezers. Bootsy Collins is another; I saw him at The Odeon in New Street - was even louder than Lemmy.
  8. Does the name 'Ed Smith' resonate with cricket fans ? Neither of my 2 (Villa supporting) Warwickshire member friends had ever heard of him. His illustrious career seems to run to 3 Test Matches + commentator. BUT ... he did play for Middlesex and Kent so that helps.
  9. Hey MickeyC _UTV - this is a 'Campag Only' Forum (and they now do '12' !!)
  10. I don't know if I have been slow in picking this up but I read that Wisden is going to ban the expression "Chinaman" from their book. Is this entirely serious ? I wonder how many Chinese actually follow cricket in order to be offended ? Has the World gone mad or is this at reasonable move by the authorities? Answers on a postcard. Oh .. and I wonder what the chances of Warks first match against Sussex going ahead tomorrow !
  11. Anyway ... far more important than some Test Match --- let's hope De Grandhomme carries his form to Warwickshire this season !
  12. There is no doubt this cheating is very bad for cricket but ..... is the media reaction a bit excessive ? He hasn't murdered anyone; seems a bit like the furore over Lance Armstrong. Anyway, how come Atherton seems to have got away Scot free (dirt in pocket) AND he is from Lancashire !!!!!
  13. I may be wrong, of course, but I tempted to think the definition of a 'boy band' is a group of youths who don't actually play an instrument. McCartney, I am told by bass players I have played with was pretty good and whilst Ringo was no Jeff Porcaro even Buddy Rich stated that he had a great sense of rhythm. I wonder if a lot of the Beatles critics weren't around to endure what teenagers were subjected to before they burst on the scene. Apologies for going so far off topic.
  14. You mean like (Sir) Ian Bell could !
  15. Well of course England have previous for this sort of thing don't they ? Atherton and the dirt in his pocket. He seemed to have come away unscathed and still commentates on Sky. As he comes from Lancashire, I'd have had him executed !!!
  16. Hmm; well it seems something is not right ..... but not sure about Michael Vaughan. Having just finished Jonathon Trott's book, he was quite unsympathetic to Trott , if I understood it correctly.
  17. Just as well Jeetan Patel wasn't playing for the Kiwis .
  18. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Too much tilt on the hi-hat cymbals
  19. The Tiernan-Locke person has a real axe to grind as he was chucked off Team Sky as his biological passport showed discrepancies which has NOT happened to Wiggins. The asthma drug he was prescribed is an iffy steroid but quite legal if declared AFAIK. Before I took up bike racing I suffered from terrible asthma and was given that stuff he was given under the name Kenalog; it was incredibly effective but GP would only give it once a year and only reluctantly the next year. I can't help but feel someone has got it in for Wiggins. Hope I'm right about it all but then I hoped Armstrong was innocent !
  20. Was it John Birch famous for 'tinkering' with Gibsons ?
  21. Did ALL Gibsons used to have maple necks or jut the higher end ones ? What was that wood - do you happen to know ? Not a guitarist so no expert but thought Gibsons (pre Epiphone) were ace rock guitars - perhaps not as versatile as a Strat though. Bottom of the range drums now seem to be made of box wood or Poplar - moving then to Birch then Maple and top of the range = Bubinga which I'd never heard of in the 70's. I think there was some sort of problem with that too. RE. above - what about 330 as used by the peerless Larry Carlton (I think).

    Racism

Stand up ... Michael Jackson !!

    Racism

Didn't know about LOZELLS .. but there was a handwritten sign in Alum Rock. A prisoner where I worked first made me aware of that and it was later shown in a newspaper. Got a chance of being true I suppose.
  24. More or less the same as Mr Mooney but ..... in the 70's there used to be a magazine called 'International Musician'. This was essential reading at the time and published great 'Best of ' lists, proper reviews of instruments (well, drum kits anyway) and really good articles by 'proper' musos. There was a memorable article by the late Frank Zappa which suggested many musicians would rather receive oral sex after a gig than get paid. I will refrain from comment !!
