The Bundesliga Thread

Is there anyway I could watch Bundesliga without BT?

Going to Uni soon and I won't have my parents BT Sport to watch it on and I want to start watching more Bundesliga games.

Also, what teams compare to other Premier League teams in terms of standard and style, for a kind of measuring stick for the teams, i.e. Bayern = Man Utd?

ITV2 are doing a weekly highlights show.  I've not caught one yet though so don't know if it's any cop.

In terms of like for like teams, it's hard to compare at the top because the German sides don't spend like the English ones.  There's no Man City or Chelsea equivalent, although Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim have both had a go at spending disproportionate levels of cash for a Bundesliga side.

I'd have a (rough) punt at -

Man Utd = Bayern

Arsenal = Dortmund

Newcastle = Schalke

Liverpool = Hamburg

Everton = Bayer Leverkusen

Villa = Nürnberg

Newcastle = Hertha Berlin

Spurs (pre-cash) = Borussia Mönchengladbach

Man City = Wolfsburg

Chelsea (pre-cash) = VfB Stuttgart

The others it's harder to say.  I'd be interested to get BOF and a few of the other's views on the above.  In all though it's so hard to say.  There are so many differences between the PL and every other league in Europe.

They're good matchups. The only one I don't fully get is Everton/Bayer because one is loaded and the other isn't. I suppose there's a similarity to their league positions. I'd also say one (Everton) is looked upon much more fondly as a club than the other is.

Always regret the fact that I never took in a bundesliga game during my 3 yrs living in Germany.  Some of the stadiums look stunning.

I put Newcastle in the list twice, strangely.  I guess you could line them more up with Hertha than Schalke due to the relegations.

Villa and Nürnberg matches up as most of their glamorous history was around the time of the inception of the league.

Everton and Bayer was geared around big clubs with some degree of European success but that have never really been able to crack the top of the league for a sustained period.

I tried to find a comparable side to Kaiserslautern but there are none that fit well enough. They are simply incomparable :D I would have gone with (pre-Venkys)Blackburn Rovers as they are both relatively recent* and unfashionable league champions now residing in the 2nd tier of leagues now dominated by 1 or 2 other sides and both have a fairly trophy-laden past. But 'lautern's prospects look better than Rovers' do and I just can't get past those pesky chickens :)

* Kaiserslautern 1998, Blackburn 1995.

I received a email from a friend today (can't reveal who) that gareth and keenan recently tied the knot in gretna green and are simply away on their honeymoon.

You're trying for a Bundesliga side too? Good luck and choose wisely. The 2 above aren't bad picks in fairness. If I was choosing I'd avoid the moneybags teams like Wolfsburg(VW), Hoffenheim(SAP), Bayer Leverkusen(err Bayer) or the glory hunters like yoü-know-whö.

Rgds,

A Kaiserslautern fan.

wouldnt really say Bayer are moneybags though owned by a corporation like Bayer they rarely spend big compared to other teams

Go for Eintracht Braunschweig, read a great story other day in which the team made a nightmare start and 500 fans marched on the training ground not to hurl abuse but to encourage the players in training and they won the derby in the next game vs Wolfsburg :). Since I have no team I made them my german team now

You know they're in the top flight for the first time since 1985 Zatman and will probably be leaving it just as quickly. You might be resigning yourself to a lifetime following the German lower leagues which might be harder to keep the enthusiasm up for. That's speaking as a Cremonese fan who chose Cremonese in around the 1994 season.
