how to beat the bookmaker

1:50 - Bangor on Dee tomorrow. Loch Ba @ 6/1 backed. Goes well fresh, wanted to back him in the bigger race on Saturday, they skipped that to go here so surely his chances are better in this. Think he should be 3/1 fav

6/1 on bet365

I bet almost always to win, it will turn out to be more profitable in the long run.

Some instances you can do something called e/w theft but those opportunities are not very common. Usually races with an odds on fav and 8 or 9 runners.

How much you put on CV? ;)

Usually lower stakes betting midweek at smaller meetings as sometimes horses are not giving their all and that has to be factored in. So have £40 on this @ 6/1

He's best price 4/1 now so getting closer to his actual odds in my opinion of 3/1

Don't bet what you can't afford to lose. See it as spending money for a bit of fun, don't look at it as a way to make profit. If you ever find yourself betting to make up losses, that's the time to walk away and realise gambling isn't for you.

Don't know how to beat the bookmaker but things I do that seem to work.

In fairness I'm a controlled gambler, I rarely put more than over a fiver on any individual bet.

If Man. United are ever over evens to win a football match, lump on them. Take the weekend, 6/5 to win a game at Old Trafford! If you hate them as much as most do then you get a little financial compensation for their success.

Bet against your own team. This one seems to attract a bit of controversy but I don't mind putting the odd 2 quid on a team to draw/beat us depending on whether the odds are higher for either. This obviously works very well for home games! And of course if you lose your stake that means we've actually won the flipping game so worth it!

Knowledge of a specialist market helps. I'm a big Tennis fan so if there's a life in game and two players are playing who are good at returning serve (say Murray and Djokovic) then could be worth continually betting they'll be a break of serve as these odds tend to be around 4 or 5-1. You will lose a bit though when sets go to tie breaks as I've found!

Random bets. These come off rarely but can give you very big wins.

Recently Mexico were going out of the world cup as Panama were beating U.S 2-1. I wanted Mexico out so lumped on U.S comeback as an insurance, with 2 minutes left U.S were 250 to win so thought I'd put a quid on that for a laugh. Of course they scored twice in injury time so that was a good few minutes work.

There was another example recently of Real Madrid losing at Levante just before injury time and they were similar odds (my Internet connection infuriatingly went down at this point!) and they scored twice in injury time to win!

Basically another big team losing to a smaller team home or away with a few minutes left, put on a quid or two for them to win, you never know. Man. United were always past masters at this under Fergie, I was watching the match at the pub but I wonder what odds they were to win when they were 2 down to us at VP last season. If I was at home I would've been lumping on them to win no question.

Tennis is one of the worst sports to bet on, The only sport I have actually come out on top on is cricket. I tried backing the certainties in football but it takes ages to build up any cash and then you always get the odd upset which puts you back to square one. I don't know what odds Murray is for sports personality of the year but that's an absolute certainty. It doesn't matter what Mo Farrah has done or any tour de france win. He's certain to win it!

Disagree, you can win a decent amount if there's 4/5 breaks of serve in a set. Obviously you need a bit of knowlege as it's no good doing that method when there's two servebots playing.

And as much as it pains me to say it, bet against Roger Federer in grand slams. The great one has aged dramatically recently yet online bookies still have lower ranked opponents he plays 6 or 7/1 to break his serve. I imagine anyone betting in play when he played that Stratekovski bloke at Wimbledon must have made a killing given he won in 4 sets (again I wasn't in!)

Federer has also lost to some ridiculous oppenents in lower tournaments aswell in the last few months so worth remembering that for the tennis season next year.

I bet solely on 3 sports. Jumps Racing, Tennis and Golf.

You make money out of tennis?

Surely you cant bet on individual match's, the odds are ridiculous!

I bet in tournament winners. Only the big 4 ever win slams or masters titles.

Take Rafa Nadal for the US Open. He was 2/1 and if you bet each way you'd get half the odds if he made the final. When you look at the draw he was on a side with nobody remotely dangerous to him. So I could bet heavily each way and only lose money if he got beat in the semis or earlier.

I also do a bit of trading. Which is harder to explain. But there are YouTube videos about the basics.

Go on bet365 and you can bet on any live tennis match from the big atp ones to the obscure challenger ones.

This is actually a good time of the year to make a little profit as most of the players are out on their feet from playing the last 9 months so there are more shocks this time of the year.

Not a massive gambler by any stretch but I had a shit hot streak back last season when we kept on throwing leads at the end of games. Literally won hundreds just by chucking money against us when we were leading.

Yep that's another good way of earning some money, I think I did that when we were 3-1 up at Everton just as insurance. 2 nil up at WBA at half time springs to mind aswell.

The reason I don't do more of that is I am actually at games and my Mobile can just about deal with a basic internet connection!

Wait for Man Utd to go a goal down (like they always do) and then bet on them winning (like they always do).

I am not much of a betting man but I did this at the start of last season, won and then did it for the rest of the season every time they went down. You'll win a small fortune because if you bet IMMEDIATELY when they go a goal down then you get really good odds for them winning.

Yeah, there are some things that you will almost always win on in the long run if you bet on them consistently. In the second half of the McLeish season I would bet on us to draw literally every game except against the top teams and I made quite a bit of money out of that. The good thing is that the odds for draws are normally quite good so you didn't even need to win that often to be in the black.

Yep during the McLeish season we were still bizzarely being priced at the likes of Paddy Power at 12/5 to draw games. Put a fiver on that and the return isn't far off 20 quid so yep you can build a decent profit given we usually average 12-15 draws a premier league season (although not so much this year).

Used to do loads of betting accumulators when at Uni but not so much nowadays. It's a more interesting way of spending a Saturday at the pub watching Soccer Saturday anyway.

I would always bet on all the results to win not a five or six fold or perming them or whatever (for someone who bets weekly I'm still not au fait with all the terminology).

my rules were.....1. Never beat on the early Saturday morning game. Nothing worse than your accy being finished before 3pm.

                            2. Always put the top teams in your accy. United, Chelsea, Arsenal etc win most weeks after all unless they're playing each other.

                            3. Always put Blues to win in your accy. You need a shower but again you can live with the bet not coming up if they don't win.

                            4. Put other teams we're competiting with in the league...e.g. during our top 4 chasing years I always included Man. City, Spurs and Liverpool in them. Sadly recent years it would be the bottom team!

                             5. Final one...always include one Sunday game on your accy. That way if all the saturday results come up you can quickly head down to the bookies on Sunday morning to lump on a draw/win of the oppenents they team you need to win are playing as insurance. I remember one time I was waiting for an accy to come up for a 70 quid win and just need Spurs to beat Wigan on the sunday. Put a bit on Wigan to win/draw, it was the game Spurs beat them 9/1.

This thread is great, the memories are flooding back and interesting to see how other team approach gambling. Another thing I liked to do was bet each/way on a first goalscorer being a centre half.

I lived in Stoke when they first came up to the prem when the Delap throw in was at its peak. Shawcross and Huth were always 25/1 to score first in home games and that one came off for me a couple of times. (after one time I walked into William Hill to claim a winning bet and randomly discovered a girl on my course and someone I quite fancied was actually working there and behind the counter, fair to say it was a quick hello, collection of winnings and leg it out of there!)

Betting can be fun as long as it's with control. If you're trying to set it up as an alternative income method, that's when shit come happen.
