Really?

I thought they were pretty dire. Not quite as bad as this season but still.

Cardiff were last seasons Newcastle when it comes to stats like passing, possession, touches and all that fancy stuff that Europeans like.

They just didn't get anywhere near the results Newcastle have this season.

Do you think Bruce is a better manager than Benitez? From your posts it seems to indicate it

Rafa has won more Championship titles than promotion specialist Bruce never mind rest of his cabinet

Newcastle United, passive and pathetic
You can forget the Rafa Benitez comparisons, because they do not stand up to scrutiny. Newcastle United had an awful first half of 2018/19, but over the second half of the season Benitez revolutionised their football. Between mid-January and the end of the season, only four Premier League teams scored more goals than Newcastle.

Under Steve Bruce, it’s often hard to work out what the point is or whether there is any aim at all. Newcastle defend deep, sacrifice possession and ostensibly seem to hope that they get lucky on the break or rely upon set-pieces. The two attacking midfielders pick up the ball as auxiliary wing-backs and are therefore asked to carry it 50 yards and beat three players to create a chance, while the striker is left chronically isolated.

Newcastle’s attacking numbers are abysmal. They rank 19th for goals scored, 20th for expected goals, 20th for shots, 20th for touches in the opposition box and 20th for possession. Their strategy for survival is hoping that their early season upsets against bigger teams carries them through a long winter and spring. That might well prove to be enough, and Bruce can reasonably insist that his only task was to keep them up, but bugger me it’s horrible to watch.

If the quality of Newcastle’s squad was a fair excuse for this eye-bleeding fare in August, that doesn’t really apply now. Nobody made more signings in January. The team that started at the Emirates included arguably the best goalkeeper outside the top seven, two international full-backs – both new signings – and two international central defenders, an international central midfielder and a young player wanted by Manchester United, two exciting attacking midfielders and a striker signed for £40m last summer. Joelinton has struggled badly and looks bereft of confidence, but he flourished in Germany with strikers around him. Lumping the ball long to him and expecting him to cope is nonsensical.

Bruce took plenty of stick when he was appointed, and there are some Newcastle supporters who seem to actively want him to fail as a result, but this is on him. The supporters who travel the country to watch their team will have been embarrassed by their collapse on Sunday, but when you sacrifice possession and territory this becomes the norm. The only Newcastle player with more than two league goals this season is a central midfielder who has missed more than 40% of their matches.

Newcastle have been in the bottom 2/3 of every positive stat for the previous 2 seasons. The ony thing the have been near the top of is shots from distance

Guess you can chalk it off to a purple patch but I thought they looked on the way to something good towards the end of last season.

As mentioned in the Fot365 article above their form during the second half of last season was quite good.

28 points from the last 16 games. 8 wins, 3 draws and 5 losses. 26 goals scored in that run in (while shipping 25 which is pretty poor)

Benitez teams are primarily defensive and always have been. He won a league 2 years ago that Bruce never got near winning in the 2 seasons after

This.

It's getting attention now.

When you play like this, there's absolutely no leeway as soon as you have a bad result.

He won't be getting another Premier League job after this.

The dinosaur's dinosaur.

When he was appointed at Newcastle the narrative was that they are definitely going down, he’s got them in a reasonable place to survive. If he keeps them up he won’t have too much trouble getting another PL job.

Its just the easily offended Villa fans that don’t like/rate him. Everyone else has a more balanced view.

Except Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Crystal Palace and probably blues fans as well

They're the worst team in the league and it's incredible they've fluked the number of points they have.

There's no way he will, who's going to employ someone who gets the team to not participate in matches? The dinosaur's dinosaur.

A great appointment for Ashley undoubtedly. Lightning rod of hate and might keep you up because you won't take too many tankings. When his luck turns, probably next season, he'll be out the door.

I detest him yes, massive prick. Newcastle fans were having a right whine after the arsenal game, I don't think they like him very much at all. Why wouldn't they be pleased with their season? Beyond their wildest dreams that they'd be out of the relegation zone at this point. He's a boyhood fan like Smith, he should have the gallowgate singing his name every week.

No, he shut them all up with disgusting football and by telling them they didn't know what was best. They like him now.

Haha, you just confirmed what we all know. It’s the “shut some people up” comment that you’re still crying about and has formed basis for the hatred.

Its what he signed Alex for, to hand out masks as he was a shit player

Alex Bruce has a combined total of 48 PL games spread over 3 seasons and 9 years and 2 clubs.

All of them has come under his daddy as manager. I think that's kinda cute.
