Same way i dont like Liverpool F.C doesnt make me anti-Scouse. Why? What does the captain of an international football team actually do other than exchange a pennant at the start of the game and choose heads or tails when its his teams turn to call the coin toss? I guess a captain might be more important in Sunday league when you can have some really inexperienced players turning out for you, but at the very highest level of the game that simply isnt an issue. My personal theory is it is because we are a cricket playing nation and a cricket captain is actually an important and demanding job so we assume the same is true of all sports. Its not true. Fans who think that international footballers look only to the bloke with a bit of rag tied around his arm for inspiration are **** deluded. As somebody said on a popular micro blogging service earlier today; the biggest job an England captain has to do is shake hands with the opposition before kick off, and John Terry can't even be trusted to do that. Only captains can talk to referees about decisions etc.. at the next tournament. Not that referees ever change their mind anyway.. but that is a pretty important role.
