Confirmed Signing: Shay Given (Man City)

Given has been a class act at Newcastle and Man City, in all fairness, shouldn't have been dropped last season for Hart, but Hart such a superb talent, I can understand why Man City did. But it wasn't really down to Given form.

People talk about resale value, but we do have some really good young GK, who should hopefully be ready to take over soon when Given is ready to hang up his gloves. Would be excited with this transfer.

Have to say I think Given would be a rubbish signing.Much prefer Foster

Me too

I comfort myself with the facts that:

1. I assume our medical staff (maybe this will be the newly acquired Dr McGuiness) will be satisfied that Shay's shoulder is now sorted.

2. As such we will get three to four years out of a very good keeper.

3. He will be retiring just as Siegrist will be 22-23 and ready to take over first team duties (at least until Citeh take an interest in him!)

How good is Siegrist, alot of people really rate him on here. If he is that good it means Given's age is ok as he is just a stop gap until Siegrist

We've been preparing our bid for the last 7 days, it must be one long fax that someine is sending

From what I gather, really good. Won the golden gloves at the U-17s World Cup (IIRC) and Switzerland are apparently thinking of giving him a senior call-up soon.

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov believes Manchester City keeper Shay Given would be the ideal replacement for Brad Friedel.

Given's £3.5 million move from City is expected to go through later this week subject to a successful medical. It will be new Villa manager Alex McLeish's first signing since replacing Gerard Houllier last month.

Petrov was sorry to see Friedel leave Villa - for Tottenham - after a three-year spell but is confident 35-year-old Given will fill the void.

The Bulgaria international said: 'Shay is one of the best keepers in the league and, if he comes to us, it will be a great signing for us.

'He's got European experience and Premier League experience so what else do you need? Brad Friedel was a big loss. He played a major part at this club and I was sad to see him go.

'He was outstanding for us, for his age, and he showed everybody it doesn't matter how old you are.

He's signed another two year contract (at Tottenham) at the age of 40.

'But Shay would be a great signing and I hope that could happen.'

Still think kuszack is a better shout. He has done well when he has had a chance just hasn't had a run of games in a while. He is also a lot cheaper than Given.

Just imagine how up in arms this place would be if we signed him.

There is a reason why he will go to a lower premiership club whilst Given will always stay at the top end.

I think if Given comes here and stays fit he will change few peoples minds with his performances as he can have those days where he is unbeatable.

I would rather us have a younger player who could develop and play a part longer term, but if Siegrist is as good as he is supposed to be, signing Given might work for us.

I thought that general optimism around Siegrist had dipped severely over the past season or two.

Would rather have Robinson as he seems to have really been consistant since moving to Balckburn?
