Paddy's "Things that cheer you up"

I don't do facebook.

See, I was just trying to big up my kids which is perfectly natural and also trying to throw in the fact that they are in a 'bog standard' non-Goved comprehensive but because of the staff they do exceptional stuff.

I talk to parents of kids at other schools about what they've been up to and they are amazed at the programme of events and the facilities at, what is, the default choice state funded comp for our area. It tells me that regardless of location and regardless of the political desire to impose whatever variation of whatever system it basically boils down to whether the teachers and leaders have drive and vision and whether enough parents support them.

As for whether there are 'normal' kids any more, about 10% of the pupils won some form of award, which by my mental arithmetic means 88.7% didn't.

------

These exceptionally driven and enthusiastic teachers took the kids to London this week for a couple of nights to see a couple of musicals and generally make a nuisance of themselves around St Pauls.

Had I had facebook, I'd have known that all 6 teachers had to be rescued, pissed and emotional, from a stuck hotel lift at about 2:00am.

you used to be so much more fun :P

I wasn't knocking their achievements ( I was keeping them grounded by not offering to many  congratulations )  but I'm not really a believer in schools taking credit  ... maybe I just went to a shit school , but I (and many of my friends) succeeded despite our schooling not because of it  ... the school may have helped your children but the talent has to come from within if they didn't have it to start with no amount of school is going to bring it out  (imo)

So knock Gove and blame Thatcher all you want , schools wont change no matter whose running them

this isn't a dig at teachers , I had some very decent teachers and the teachers at my kids school are fantastic , they go above and beyond the line of duty for the children ( when they aren't on holiday of course )  ... but whatever ability I had I found it myself , when I get my Noble price for not being George Bush I wont be thanking my school teachers for helping me achieve it  ...

maybe I just had a bad school as  I say  ,

What's wrong with people (incl. kids) being the best they can be?

not sure that anyone has says there is

Well, theoretically, praising your children (in front of others or otherwise) would further encourage their interest in whatever they happen to be good at.

Similarly, not praising them would act as discouragement.

So the theory goes.

(okay, okay, perhaps there's no need to to tell everyone about how impressive your children are...come to think of it, that might be counterproductive. Not sure, any psychologists on VT?)

T, I'm not **** interested you've **** upset me on a **** Friday so **** off.

yeah, I take your point, I think my kids are now the sort of kids that I would not have liked when I was in school. You'd get kicked for having the wrong band name written on your school bag (particular dislike of 'Rush' I recall), now my lot are taking piano lessons.

Just don't tell my working class mates down the socialist worker I'm paying for extra piano lessons for little Jemima and Gideon.

my post was intended more tongue in cheek than serious  , I was sorta asking , where are all the average kids  , rather than knocking the kids themselves   ... now it's true that not every parent on my facebook friends list has posted , but those that did it was all blah blah Tarquin was voted best in school  and blah blah Tiffany not only won her race but she even had time to save a drowning cat on the way

nobody posted to say , Little Johnny finished 5th in his race but never gave up and I'm so proud of him  ..or Little Susie got 60% in Maths a great improvement from her 40% last year , great stuff and keep up the good work

It's like a reverse of my dad's bigger than your dad from our school days and now it's my son is better than yours

I've no problem with praising the kids , it's the parents I'm sorta making "judgement " on ...

Meh ... A real working class man would be at work tomorrow as well so Friday isn't that important

So renting a converted barn in West Wales for a long weekend and getting the owner to do a little grocery shop for me in advance, that's probs just adding to the charge sheet?

My Son got Grade 6 maths at primary school. Quite a big achievement, the only one at his school. Then the same day we got the results, it was his end of school leaving do, where they did a 60's night. He gave a great performance of Ain't no mountain high enough.

cool kids are cool

We should have a thread where we can just talk about our kids but the jaffas and virgins on this site can't enter and go all Kevin and Perry on us.

In a comp of several hundred kids per year group my youngest nipper has just won 'top prize' in two curriculum subjects plus the 'general good egg' award.

It's certainly not a comp that believes in solely inclusive group efforts without 'winners'. They have a separate rec room with a costa coffee franchise and a gym with extra equipment for the kids that excel in any way - be it massive personal improvement, excellent attendance, or really good in a particular subject. The rewards just ramp up the better they are.

Downside: nipper has just been given a wadge of additional summer homework for selected geeks and nerds and has been invited to some 'summer workshops'

Congratulations, you must be very proud!

Our daughter got the year 2 award for achievement last year.  It said on her report that she'd won it this year as well, but the bloody teacher had cut and paste it from another report!  When we queried it, we were told that the kids were only allowed to win the awards once anyway!  What's all that about?

It turns out that what I thought was Japanese Knotweed on my terrace is apparently bindweed.  Much less destructive and can be removed with much less pain.

(Every summer, I used to go outside looking like Rambo to cut the stuff back.  It was like the day of the Triffids).

Whilst your mentioning of Rambo and Day of the Triffids was an admirable effort, take it to the Boring Thread, fella ;)
