We backed ourselves into a corner by leaving it so late and put all the power in his court.

If the power is in his court, then where is the ball?

In his hands?

I think between £8k to £10k per week would be a fair wage for our most promising youngster.

Fair and realistic are different things.

This is one of the hottest prospects in British football. And he's out of contract in the summer. What is he being offered by Chelsea? Well first of all what is he worth? Young skilful English player. Probably quite a lot. I would not be overly surprised if, were he in the middle of a contract, he was subject to bids in the range of £10-15 million. Luke Shaw moved for 30 million and he's a left back... Yeah he has had a full season in the premier league, but that's why Jack is more of a risk and therefore worth less. People have been aware of Grealish for a long time. So let's say £12 million. Over the course of this 5 year contract that he has apparently been offered this 12 million current valuation will need to be paid, because he either gets it from us, or he'll get it from lets say Chelsea. Over the course of that contract, the 12 million amounts to 50 grand per week. And that's just the money that Chelsea would have to pay so someone else if they wanted to buy someone in contract, not the money then that they would have to pay this player in wages. The player is unlikely to play for free just because Chelsea paid his former team a large transfer fee.

So Mr Grealish will not be offered 8k/week. 8k per week would put his valuation at close to £1.5 million pounds. Why would he sign that contract if Villa could turn around in the summer and say to Chelsa here, you can have this guy for £8 million, because the idiot agreed to sign that contract with us which didn't reflect his market value? No one wanted Barry Bannan when he was offered £20k. There is a question of him getting Premier League game time which means that he would likely be willing to be on less money at Villa than at Chelsea, but this could be his one big contract. Football is fickle. He'll want to make the most of it, and if offered the obscene contract at Chelsea versus the money here over a 5 year contract, he may think he'll go out on loan for a season, for his first team experience, while he earns the 50k.

Jack Grealish will be offered somewhere between 35k-50k/week.

Grealish will not be offered between 35k and 50k IMO, my guess is 20k and then a review at the end of the season for a potential rise. By all accounts it will hopefully be wrapped up by the end of the week.

to put that in to perspective (from various sources, take the accuracy with a pinch of salt) -

loftus cheek - £15k

Ake - £20k

Chalobah - £30k

Andreason - £20k

Bamford - £8k

McEachran - £38k

Atsu - £12k

at a lazy guess jack has more premier league appearances than all of those put together, if we offer Grealish £8k a week Chelsea will blow us out of the water without battering an eyelid

If Chelsea wanted to buy a Grealish equivalent that was in contract he would cost £12 million. Let's call him Stephen Downing who plays for Sunderland and has two years left on his contract.

Because Grealish is out of contract, he will get a good portion of that 12 million pounds. He owns himself and therefore he will get the transfer fee. If Chelsea won't pay it, someone else will and then Chelsea will have to shell out the £12 million anyway on Stephen Downing

He may also then expect to get the money that Chelsea would be paying Stephen Downing as wages every week.

So let's compare the two players. Both worth £12 million but Downing is in the middle of his contract and Grealish is coming to the end of his. In the eyes of Villa fans it would go something like this

Stephen Downing - 12 million pounds plus 20k/week over 5 years = Cost to the club of ~£16 million pounds

Jack Grealish - Free because he's already at the club. 20k/week over 5 years = Cost to the club of ~£4 million

Does anyone see why Jack might reckon that the £12 million shortfall here might be worked into his contract negotiations in deciding what the cost to the club should be of him being on their books for the next 5 years?

Yeah and signing those contract done wonders for their careers didn't they.

Mceachran is finished and Chalobah has had about 6 billion clubs in a year that have all sacked him off.

If Chelsea want to pay obscene money for a bit of potential then let them, we don't have an oil barren financing us.

£35k for a 19 year old Grealish is madness.

I don't think he's one of the hottest prospects in British football. At a first team level, he currently has potential, but not much else.

Luke Shaw (and other players of that standard) have proven themselves at a higher level than friendlies and U21 football, Jack hasn't.

I think £15-£20k would be a reasonable wage for a promising youngster in our squad.

A few years ago Albrighton, Delfouneso and Bannan all looked to be decent youngsters, but none have lived up to their true potential (in my opinion). Jack could do the same, so we'd be crazy to give him high wages on the assumption that he would reach his full potential and then be worth what Chelsea/ Man Utd/ Man City might want to pay us for him.

If this is the case he could ask for a 3 year contract at well over 70,000 per week.

I have never read so much drivel in my life.

that would leave him £65k a week poorer than luke shaw...

arguing about football wages is utterly pointless, there's no such thing as value or worth anymore, there is going rate, and the the going rate is set by clubs with far too much money and then filters down

Oxlade Chamberlain

Prowse

Chambers

Sterling

Barkley

These are top top teenage talents, that are able to command those salaries. Jack isn't even close to them at the minute, I doubt he is asking for £35k, I hope not, but for people on here to try and justify that is absurd. Truly absurd.

Again, what is it you don't agree with? Do you just get very exasperated when someone makes a point you don't agree with without actually trying to see if maybe it has some validity.

The only question here is whether or not we think that if Grealish was in contract, there is a premier league team that would be willing to pay £12 million to buy him off us. I say there would be. I say he has been brought to the attention of enough top scouts that there is a Chelsea or an Arsenal out there that would be willing to pay that price for him to be on their team. That is the only contentious issue. The rest is just how contract negotiations would play out.

so our best youth prospect being on £35k doesn't seem that daft to me

'Our best' and the hottest british prospects are different though. Bannan and Albrighton were amongst 'our best' prospects. Should we have given them £35k or above?
