Kingfisher
attacks I'm subjected toThis here is the issue, victim, victim, victim - typical standpoint But yeah you right, like everybody who didnt give a **** about the austerity march I just shouldnt read it or take notice of it, not because I dont care, Im just bored of hearing the victim agendaVictim agenda? I'll ignore (as I usually do) this ad hominem attack on me and stick to the subject. I strongly disagree with your assertion that people who have to attend food banks, people who are told they're fit to work when they're not, people suffering inhumane sanctions, in work people who can't afford to fuel themselves or their cars...are moaners playing the victim card. I think most people do care, but I think that there is a media agenda to divert attention away from where the real blame and the solutions lie. I think big business control the media and the government and have far too much of a say in policy. Time for a government that works for us, the 99%, not the 1%. MakemineVanilla
I think the march was badly organised and the left have retreated into a media conspiracy to hide that fact. There was an anti-austerity march in 2012 when there was 100 000 people in attendance and 50 000 this time. The last one had some high profile speakers (Ed) and was well sponsored by the trade unions and other lobby groups, who obviously paid for the transport of those attending (hugely important). The few photos which exist suggest that this latest event was less well organised and sponsored. There aren't even any decent photographs to substantiate the claim that there were 50k in attendance, not even on the sites who are suggesting a conspiracy. Even good Trots are allowed to own cameras. Choosing to start the march outside BBC headquarters, who were required to erect barriers and hire extra security staff, is hardly the best way to get the media on your side. So all indications suggest that it was poorly organised and sponsored. Edited June 24, 2014 by MakemineVanilla
Risso
This is how the BBC reported a pro cuts march attended by all of 300 people.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13398966 Saturday's march had 50,000 people and nothing, nada, zippo. A complete national blackout. A tiny local news write up, tiny video, no TV coverage. It's a blatant agenda. Still, not quite "not a single mention", eh? Is it really that newsworthy? There have been quite a few such protests, and maybe there were just more newsworthy things happening on the day. And even worse than Russell Brand, I see that little scrote Owen Jones was involved. Anything that keeps that little twot off my TV is fine by me.

A petition against the BBC has received 4,800 signatures. Stories like this must be reported in future. It's deadly serious. Like you, the government want to keep 'little scrotes' like Owen Jones or Russell Brand and 50,000 people quiet - because they're highlighting their failures and flagging up their agendas.

But you have to admit that there is something ironic about 50k people travelling to central London to listen a speech from someone, whose most famous political statement was, 'Don't vote!', and then complaining that no one is listening to them.
Kingfisher
It wasn't a Russell Brand tour date, people really didn't travel down to London to 'listen to Russell Brand'.

I'd like to keep the pair of them quiet because they're loathesome self-publicists with nothing to say that's worth listening to. MakemineVanilla
It wasn't a Russell Brand tour date, people really didn't travel down to London to 'listen to Russell Brand'. But the People's Assembly, one of the main organisers, have Brand on the home page of their website, which suggests he was the main attraction. Kingfisher
Well they spoke for 10 mins between them, the day was about austerity cuts. The real story is the 50k ordinary people who marched that day, what they marched for and sadly, how it's been ignored.
Seat68
I think I am part of the left, but anything Russel Brand is involved in would put me off. He is such a naive man, he has no concept of the real world at all.
Jon
I don't see the problem with Rusky Brand. He has some very valid views. I see no problem with him not voting either. There are many that don't vote to prop up what they consider an undemocratic and illegitimate process/system. Owen Jones - usually completely spot on the money, for me. I think Lucas was there to, wasn't she?
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Marches are all well and good for getting people interested but if the Left wants to make a difference it needs to stop having a sexist champagne socialist as a spokesperson and start putting forward more interesting people with some genuine ideas. Brand is just a naysayer with fine chest hair.

Which is where Brand comes in, I guess.
andyjsg Posted June 24, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted June 24, 2014 (edited) I see, so whilst we are complaining about austerity we should spend more money to police and then report on Russel Brand and his occult spouting unrealistic views of the world. It all sounds so cute and wonderful but just isnt sustainable. Dont get me wrong I'm not exactly happy with the way either business or individuals have so much wealth and influence, but I would prefer they were here than not, as they tend to be the ones employing a large proportion of the population in the private sector. I guess what we should do then Comerade, is kick out all the large companies and get everybody working for the state, then everybody can go to food banks - sounds awesome.... Or we can just look at ourselves in the mirror and realise the only one who can change our own destiny and look after us is ourselves, rather than passing the buck on to someone else. This way we can have good lives and be happy with what we have, rather than constantly bitching and moaning about what we dont have and what others do. Ive just remembered why I only contribute to the running and cycling threads as this is almost as bad as the Paul Lambert and Takeover threads.... So you want to stop freedom of speech, or at least freedom of speech you don't agree with. Meanwhile you are prepared to accept global corporations and certain individuals avoiding tax and amassing huge wealth while people live on food bank handouts because you are scared of the consequences of making these people do what is right. In my book what we should do is have a government that tackles the bigger issues, the bigger avoidance of contributing to the wealth of the nation rather than shying away from it because of self interests while picking on the weakest in society. But then a lot of people on the right of the political spectrum don't much like that word society.
