Pink

Britney

I have gone for some good some bad. I do have to say though my personal taste does tend to linger at the bottom of the chart or be from years gone by so not chartable. Along side these though i usually do like a couple of the top 10 as i can appreciate any well written song and pop music is no exception

years gone by? i bet they were in the chart at the time though... so still chartable, and counts as chart music.

Mostly bad. KoL, Green Day, The Enemy and The Probably are the only ones that might grace my generic MP3 playing device. The rest can never record anything again from my POV.

Incidentally, how do you annoy Lady GaGa?

P-p-p poke her face, p-p poke her face.

EDIT: Franz Ferd-in-the-hand are alright too.

Does this include downloads now? I'd rather assumed that the "singles" chart died a natural death some years ago.

Given my old git views I'm not qualified to vote on this, anyway.

Does anyone actually bother looking at the singles chart anymore? You only need to sell a dozen copies and you're in at number 3 these days.

Do record shops sell singles anymore? Can't remember seeing any for a long while.

That 'Flo Rida' song is the worst thing I have heard in many a year, and it's competing with an avalanche of top class contemporary shite for that honour.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but pop 'songs' (of the top 40 Lady Gaga, Flo Rida variety) dont even sound like songs to me anymore! :)

I never listen to the radio so i can't really vote ( radio 5 live is about it)

I just got bored of hearing the same stuff over and over based on backhanders from the record labels rather than any real talent

Last time i checked the Top 40 I think "Hit me baby one more time " was new in at number 1

I honestly cant remember the last time I cared about the charts. Maybe during the Britpop era.

The charts are less relevant these days than they ever were. They arent peoples window into music any more. Bands dont need to be on top of the pops to get their name out there these days. Anyone with an internet connection can find the specific kind of music they want to listen to. Things like LastFM, Spotify and even iTunes Genius are far better tools for getting people into new music they havent heard yet than going down the route of whatever Simon Cowell tells Britain what their #1 record will be.

I mean, how **** up has it got when I can predict with confidence that the Christmas number one record for 2009 will be the debut single by someone who wins the X Factor?

Dunno what you younguns are listening to these days :P Though I still can't get bored of the Lady Gaga video. I'd poker face.

Most recorded music has something of merit in it; it genuinely seems to me that the top 40 is more and more merely a list of those without.

I NEVER check the charts. I couldn't tell you what is number one ever! But from that list I would say some good and some bad, so I voted for that.

Calvin Harris - Good

Kings of Leon - Amazing

Miley Cyrus - wank

Beyonce - shit

Lily Allen - average

Prodigy - very very good

Just Jack - meh

Flo Rida - hahahaha

Lady Gaga - hate her

Pink - used to be good, not so much anymore

Britney - nope

James Morrison - crap

Green Day - average

Franz Ferdinand - not my cup of tea but they have talent

Girls Aloud - I have a secret appreciation for GA

Eminem - used to be good, not sure about his new stuff

Akon - awful awful awful awful music

Taylor Swift - fit, but crap songs

Enemy - good

I must say, the point of view that all commercial music is shit is something that really annoys me. Yes a lot of it is, but JUST because it is commercially successful doesn't make it shit.

That said, I'd probably take the UK chart over the US chart(s):

Billboard's Hot 100 (which encompasses single sales (both physical and digital) and radio airplay):

1. Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow

2. Lady GaGa - Poker Face

3. Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite

4. Jamie Foxx featuring T-Pain - Blame It

5. Flo Rida - Right Round

6. Soulja Boy Tell 'em featuring Sammie - Kiss Me Thru the Phone

7. Flo Rida featuring Wynter - Sugar

8. T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake - Dead and Gone

9. Miley Cyrus - The Climb

10. Beyonce - Halo

11. Eminem - We Made You

12. The All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell

13. 3OH!3 - Don't Trust Me

14. Lady GaGa featuring Colby O'Donis - Just Dance

15. The Fray - You Found Me

16. Pitbull - I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)

17. Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You

18. Taylor Swift - Love Story

19. Britney Spears - If U Seek Amy

20. Shinedown - Second Chance

21. Soulja Boy Tell 'em - Turn My Swag On

22. Keri Hilson featuring Lil Wayne - Turnin Me On

23. Jason Mraz - I'm Yours

24. Ciara featuring Justin Timberlake - Love Sex Magic

25. Pink - Sober

26. Keri Hilson featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo - Knock You Down

27. Jesse McCartney featuring Ludacris - How Do You Sleep?

28. Asher Roth - I Love College

29. Ne-Yo - Mad

30. Jason Aldean - She's Country

31. Akon featuring Colby O'Donis & Kardinal Offishall - Beautiful

32. Miley Cyrus - Hoedown Throwdown

33. Kanye West - Heartless

34. Rascal Flatts - Here Comes Goodbye

35. The Dream - Rockin' that Thang

36. Carrie Underwood featuring Randy Travis - I Told You So

37. Dave Matthews Band - Funny the Way It Is

38. Taylor Swift - Crazier

39. Plain White T's - 1, 2, 3, 4

40. Jeremih - Birthday Sex

I haven't heard a single track from that list, and I don't think I'm one bit the poorer for it...

Radio & Records CHR airplay chart (which is the one that's used on the chart shows, even though Billboard is the one that's more apt to be considered the real chart) is a bit better, IMO, but not that much so:

1. Lady GaGa - Poker Face

2. Flo Rida - Right Round

3. Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow

4. All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell

5. T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake - Dead and Gone

6. Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You

7. Soulja Boy Tell 'em featuring Sammie - Kiss Me Thru the Phone

8. Jesse McCartney featuring Ludacris - How Do You Sleep?

9. Britney Spears - If U Seek Amy

10. Fray - You Found Me

11. Jamie Foxx featuring T-Pain - Blame It

12. Shinedown - Second Chance

13. Beyonce - Halo

14. Miley Cyrus - The Climb

15. Pink - Sober

16. Kid Cudi - Day 'N' Nite

17. 3Oh!3 - Don't Trust Me

18. Ciara featuring Justin Timberlake - Love Sex Magic

19. Lady GaGa featuring Colby O'Donis - Just Dance

20. Flo Rida featuring Wynter - Sugar

21. Britney Spears - Circus

22. Kelly Clarkson - I Do Not Hook Up

23. Akon featuring Colby O'Donis & Kardinal Offishall - Beautiful

24. Matt Nathanson - Come On Get Higher

25. Pink - Please Don't Leave Me

26. Ne-Yo - Mad

27. Eminem - We Made You

28. Pitbull - I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)

29. Kevin Rudolf featuring Rick Ross - Welcome to the World

30. Fall Out Boy - America's Suitehearts

31. Ting Tings - That's Not My Name

32. Offspring - Kristy, Are You Doing OK?

33. Nickelback - If Today Was Your Last Day

34. Kanye West featuring Mr. Hudson - Paranoid

35. White Tie Affair - Candle (Sick and Tired)

36. Plain White T's - 1, 2, 3, 4

37. Katy Perry - Waking up in Vegas

38. Asher Roth - I Love College

39. Kristinia DeBarge - Goodbye

40. Keri Hilson feat. Lil Wayne - Turnin Me On

Certain tracks that are deemed to have had their chance in the chart are relegated to the recurrent chart (basically if they take more than 20 weeks from debut to break the top 20 or are in their 52nd or later consecutive week on the chart, outside the top 10, and showing declining airplay)... all 20 that R&R lists had greater airplay than #40.

i think you're confused as to the role of the charts.

The charts tells you what everyone is listening to, not telling you what to listen to.

Its retrospective, you find whatever music you like & listen to it, the chart neatly tells you what you (in the collective sense) had found to listen to.
