Top flight league table (since 1888)

You remember when people were getting a bit restless over being 11th for for about 6 or so weeks this season?

You may want to get comfortable, think 5th might be home for a decade or so.

Unless the current 6th placed side are asked to play their games away from the top flight for whatever reason, then it will likely be called home for even longer.

Was discussing this table with some mates and an interesting question came up. I wonder when the last time the top 20/24 teams in this list were all in the top division together, or if it's even ever happened?

If anyone was curious about Glossop North End’s 34 games in the top flight. It was the 1899/00 season.

And yes, you know full well who was among the clubs in their four games they managed to win.

On the plus side, the previous encounter was a 9-0 victory and would form part of the title win that season.

So I think we had the last laugh in that regard.

The last laugh so far, anyway.

Incredible reading a bit about them, genuinely never heard of them before, but they're still going,  playing in front of 200-300 people a week, and got relegated from their 8th tier division this season.

Pinched from Facebook…….

The Stoke one is nuts

Since the first ever English top flight season of 1888 until this season 2023…

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 A total of 65 clubs have played in the first division/Premiership/Premier League

⚽️ Everton is the club with the most campaigns played (120 out of 124).

🥅 Arsenal have the record for most consecutive tournaments. (97)

⚽️ Liverpool City have always had at least one representative each season -Liverpool or Everton-.

🏆 Preston North End was the first champion (1888-89), being undefeated that edition and winning the FA Cup double. In addition, they were the first two-time champion and currently have the longest drought without winning the tournament (133 years).

⚽️ The biggest scoring win has been 12-0 and occurred on two occasions: West Bromwich over Darwen in 1892 and Nottingham Forest to Leicester City- in 1909.

🏆 Huddersfield Town were the first three in a row champions (1924-26).

🥅 The draw with the most goals was Leicester City 6-6 Arsenal in 1930.

⚽️ biggest away win is a 0-9 win for Leicester at Southampton

🏟️ Aston Villa scored the highest number of goals in a season with 128 goals in the 1930-31 season

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Tottenham have the best start of the tournament with 11 wins in 1960.

🏆 Manchester United were the first English champions of Europe (a year after Celtic became first European Cup winners from UK)

⚽️ Liverpool (6) have lifted the European Cup more than any other English side and joint third most in Europe after Real Madrid (14) and AC Milan (7) (Bayern Munich also on 6)

🌍 five English teams have won the continent’s most prestigious competition. (Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea) - more than any other league and Man City could make it 6 this season if they beat Inter.

🌳 Nottingham Forest are the only team in Europe with more European Cups (2) than league titles (1)

🏆 Manchester United were the first English side (and second from the UK) to win *the* treble of League, FA Cup and European Cup

🕰️ Everton vs Aston Villa is the most played top flight fixture

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 In 1989, London had 8 teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Charlton, Wimbledon, Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and Millwall) in the top division.

⚽️ Arsenal scored in 55 straight games between 2001 and 2002.

😮 Stoke City lost 2-0 in the very first round of fixtures in 1888 and after 136 years and 2372 games their goal difference has never recovered and has been in minus ever since - the highest it’s ever been was when it was at 0 after ten minutes of their first ever league game.

⚽️ Manchester City and Liverpool share two achievements: The most consecutive wins (18) and the most wins in a season (32).

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Man Utd’s Ryan Giggs is the player with the most leagues won (13),

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Alex Ferguson is the most successful manager with 13 titles for Man Utd between 1986-2013.

🏆 Manchester United have won the most titles (20)

🫡 Arsenal have the longest unbeaten run (49 games)

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Peter Shilton played more games than anyone else (849).

🏆 Tottenham Hotspur were the first team from the UK to win a European trophy

⚽️ William "Dixie" Dean is the all-time top scorer in a single campaign, with 60  in 1927-28. He also owns the feat of the most hat-tricks ever with 37.

👴 Stanley Matthews (Stoke City) is the oldest ever top-flight player at 50 years and 5 days.

👦 Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal) is the youngest 15 years and 181 days

⚽️ Jimmy Greaves is the all-time top scorer with 357 goals.

🏆 Manchester and London are the only English cities to have 2 European Cup finalists (London has three)

✅ Arsenal's Ted Drake scored the most goals in a single game, with 7 against Aston Villa in 1935. (One behind Celtic’s Jimmy McGrory’s all time record of 8 )

🎯 Stan Mortensen scored in 15 straight games during his stay at Blackpool in 1950.

⚽️ Liverpool have won the most points in total and Everton have scored the most goals

Were you thinking West Ham?

Nah, it’s Bolton.

West Ham have barely ever won anything. Whole trophy cabinet before this week was like 2 FA cups. Highest league finish ever was 3rd once.

Isn't there two versions of this table floating around?

One where the points are counted as what it was - 2 points a win for the earlier years and 3 points a win for the recent years, and a different version where all points have been standardised to 3 points a win.

Which version is this?

Where are Villa in the 'other' table?

And they are bigger than Small Heath

I believe this will be the standardised 3 points for every win ever table.

Using Glossop, they’re on 22 points, having recorded 4 wins, 10 draws despite having played those games prior to the brave new Jimmy Hill world.

It's amazing to think for about 50 years until probably the 40's we were the most successful club in the country

It's longer than that. I worked it out once (can't be bothered to do it again) but from memory we were the most successful team from the 1890s to the 1960s when we were overtaken by Liverpool. That span makes us the most successful club in English football history for the longest time.

Sadly if it was the 60 years since since 1963 we'd be up there with Real Madrid

Everton Vs Villa being the most played top flight match is interesting given there are 3 other teams who played significantly more top flight matches than us. There must have been some convenient relegations for multiple clubs for that to happen.
