MrBlack
Do we think we will be trying for promotion this season? I'd be disappointed if we didn't. Seems last year we just used it as a catch all for players we didn't send out on loan or use in the younger age groups. With the age limit dropping, and our plan to have the best (or up there with the best) academy in the league, it would be good to see us in the top division. If we send out the best few lads closest to breaking through on loan, what quality are we left with?

With the age limit dropping, and our plan to have the best (or up there with the best) academy in the league, it would be good to see us in the top division. If we send out the best few lads closest to breaking through on loan, what quality are we left with? Honestly I don't think so. It will be interesting to see what the age change does to the league but I suspect very little for 2 reasons. Firstly, the reason the age has changed is because most all clubs were already treating it as an under 21 or under 19 league, and secondly, the transition year from u23 to u21 means you can still use plenty of over-age players in it anyway. As for us. As you say, we tend to prioritise loans for our more promising players, and then promote the more promising younger age groups through. This is what works best for Villa because it gets the more senior players ready for first team football - and that's the ultimate goal of an under-age structure - and it accelerates the development of the u18s in a sink or swim environment ready for their next step. I used to get a little frustrated that promotion is there if we actually wanted it, but now seeing what's coming through and how they got there, I accept that finding the next Jack Grealish is ultimately what we're about, and you won't do that by keeping him in the PL2 structure beyond a certain age. So to answer in my roundabout way. No, I would be very surprised if we try for promotion or get anywhere near it. Unless we can get into the playoff spots and then anything could happen.

useless
Technically I think cateogry two teams can still compete in the Premier League by invitation, but small heath themselves announced that they would be competing in the development league next season, I doubt they're going to get invited back as seems they failed to meet the required standards by some distance, and are the only club to be forcibly downgraded from category one to category two academy. Not sure if it's been offically announced yet but there have been reports that Burnley are going to lose their category one status as well. There were also rumours about West Brom, but seems they've been given an extra year to sort themselve out.
sir_gary_cahill
The club must think highly of DJ Sturridge, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him play but for him to be kept on this long by us is quite an achievement. I think he has had a lot of injuries, has anyone seen him play?
useless
I saw him play a few times the season before last for the U23s, he looked quite skilful and seemed to have some promise... This is him with a clever assist for Barry against Wolves I think if academy players miss a lot of time through injury then we tend to give them another chance.

We don’t usually give them as much time as we have with DJ Sturridge though. He must be quite a talent, to my knowledge, he’s barely played for the u18s or u23s, I think he has been inured a lot
useless
Not sure where he's going to get game time next season, we tend to use younger players in the U23s and he probably hasn't played enough U23 football to get a loan. Will have to just wait and see what happens I guess.

Yes, I agree, he must have something about him to be kept on by the club for this long

Moderator BOF Posted July 27 Author Moderator Share Posted July 27 July 26th last year the fixtures came out, so you'd think they'll be very soon. If not this week. Especially given we kick off earlier with the world cup (although maybe the stiffs don't).
useless
Fixtures have been published on the Premier League website. first game home to Middlesbrough on August 5th. Last year was a fourteen team league, but this year only eleven teams, as Reading, Burnley, and small heath have all lost their category one status. Edit: That link doesn't show the fixtures for some reason, you have to click on the U18 tab and then go back to the U21 tab and they should come up. Moderator BOF Posted July 27 Author Moderator Share Posted July 27 Cheers @useless. Yeah an 11 team league. Looks weird. Fixtures updated above.
Rich192
Losing six fixtures is not ideal. Hopefully there’s friendlies added to make up for lost match time. I guess the good news is that we can’t get relegated!
