So you think Newcastle will sign a lot of players and they won't gel, but we will sign a lot of players and the magically will gel?

No, I don’t think we’ll sign a lot of players. I think we’re a CB and a CDM away from being a really strong team.

I think what he's saying is that as it stands, our starting point in terms of squad quality is much, much higher.

The only players from their squad I would take would be Guimaraes, ASM, Joelinton 2022 and possibly Wilson.

We have grossly underachieved this season for the players we have.

That was my main point.

+ a full preseason and a bit of luck with injuries and then theres only one international break at the end of september due to the world cup

easy to forget what a mess pre season injuries, international games and covid made to the start of our season, bailey and even buendia should hopefully be like new players next season

and then the kids back from loans to have a look at them too

i dont buy in to us needing 5 to 8 players

I wish I was as optimistic as you.  If we only sign a CB and a CDM then we are finishing mid-table again.

Completely agree, I’m optimistic. I know we’re used to things going tits up, but I have faith in the management. Bailey actually being fit enough to play would be a huge bonus as I think he’s a real talent.

We have centre backs who make mistakes far too often, midfielders that can't keep possession, attackers that go missing and strikers that can't score. I'd say 5 players minimum

Depends if any first team regulars are sold.

im sat here thinking we spend the same money on those 2 players though

does £120m on a CB and CDM improve this team more than £120m on 5 players?

in my honest opinion this team has serious mental blocks that gerrard needs to overcome, get us firing and we're much better than we've been playing, he just has to get us firing

Agree about Bailey.

But I can't see a place for him if Gerrard sticks to his preferred formation with the width provided by the full backs.

thats the biggest change thats needed this summer, we either change the system or we have the pre season to drill that system in to the players that we have

we dont need huge amounts of player turnover, we need a couple of players in key positions and then gerrard has to get more out of what he has

Round pegs in square holes.  The players have had 2/3 of a season to get used to the system, a pre-season isn't going to make a difference to the ones that haven't adapted.

Don't have a second specialist right or left back. Need upgrades in DCM and CB

Gerrard IMO will have around £120m fresh cash to use - probably only enough for 3 first team ready players. It will be his call if he thinks this enough to make the desired impact next season.

He could probably raise some funds by selling, Sanson, Bertie , Bailey etc  - might get us enough £40m tops assuming buyers can be found - not a foregone conclusion clubs will want them at prices acceptable to us.

The nuclear option would be to sell some of our better players - Mings/Mcginn/Watkins/Buendia - plenty of clubs will pay big money for those - Replacing them wouldn't be as easy as people think.

What the hell are you talking about? You said categorically that they couldn't attract quality.

There is the quality and there will be more in the summer.

I agree with most of the stuff you post Nick, but you are miles out on this one.

Ok let’s agree to disagree then, no harm in that!

Gerrard’s and Purslow’s strategy of going for slightly older players will make a big difference when it comes to transfer fees. Players aged 28+ usually go for much lower fees.

Wages will be the issue going forward, and attracting players in the first place will be the main challenge. I can imagine Villa spending relatively small sums on fees this summer.

I agree on the fullbacks. If Cash or Digne get long term injuries we’re in trouble.

Gerrard sounds as if we'll be signing several.
