Straggler
Mesut Ozil is under the impression that one day he will win the Ballon D'Or. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/mar/25/arsenal-mesut-ozil-ballon-dor He is one year younger than Messi, so I'm assuming he thinks he can improve to be better than Messi or he has ordered some sort of assassination. Big shout from a man who is not even the best player at his club.
Stevo985 Posted March 25, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted March 25, 2015 Don't really see the problem. Fair play to him. I'd love all of our players to show that level of ambition. Aim high.
Straggler
Yeah I'd love to see the reaction of Westwood popping up with that statement. It is the subtle difference between aiming high and being high.
Isa
He was easily the best attacking-midfielder/No. 10 out there for a while at Madrid, getting more assists in his three years there than many players get throughout their careers. Even used to sometimes be labelled the 'third best player in the world' in some quarters. It's extremely unlikely he'll ever acheive that - he would require a team fine-tuned to maximise his undoubted ability. He is very specialist in that regard. CarewsEyebrowDesigner
I don't see anyone beating Messi or Ronaldo to the award for the foreseeable future. They are head and shoulders above every other player.
Stevo985 Posted March 25, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted March 25, 2015 (edited) Well that's not what I said is it? I said I'd like them to show that level of ambition. So that level of ambition for our players wouldn't be winning the ballon d'or, it'd be something beneath that. The point is I'd rather see them aiming high, at something that may well be beyond them but that they can try and stretch themselves. Ozil is a £40million player who's played for some of the biggest clubs in the world. He's relatively young and has a a lot of his career in front of him. I see no problem with someone like that believing that they can, and aiming to, win the ballon d'or. Yes he will probably fall short of that goal. But I'd rather players were aiming high than settling for what they've got. Edited March 25, 2015 by Stevo985
Zatman
Yeah no problem with the guy, he has always had the potential. His performance in 2009 vs England in Sweden was jaw dropping and he carried it on for a few seasons but then he got Mourinhoized like Joe Cole and Damien Duff did and hasnt recovered yet

PaulC
Underwhelming for Arsenal and lucky to retain his place at times. I think he's a very good player, lovely touch but too lazy to ever be worlds best. Players like Messi and Ronaldo got there by working their socks off. Hazard could one day get it. He has the talent and the application.
Tomaszk
He finds football so easy it upsets me. He should be doing even better than he is I think.

Though for me, he was never a game changer, somebody who would produce that telling moment of brilliance in a tight game. He failed to perform in a few high profile UCL games, yes (along with many others). However he assisted many important goals and was usually one of the better performers in the Clasicos. He provided the assist for [effectively] the title winning goal in 2012 for example. Overall he was a fundamental component in their attack and rarely ever played the wrong pass. So did Joe Cole Indeed, just another poor example. Damian Duff I can accept.
Zatman
for me I always felt he took him off early in nearly every game because he didnt feel he worked hard for the team and because of that it seems Mourinho killed his confidence which he is still trying to recover
Nicho
Until Messi and Ronaldo are deep into their 30s will other players be able to challenge them for the Ballon Dor. Zlatan was at their level in a different way but hes now on the decline. Then theres another group of players in Neymar, Bale, Aguero, Sanchez, Ribery, Robben, Reus and Suarez who if the other two wernt around would be continually be in the battle. Ozil is certainly capable, hes getting to his best at the moment, he is like a ghost when at his best popping up everywhere, his technical ability sometimes make him seem lazy. Hed get more assists for Arsenal if their build up play didnt take them so close to the goal he is fantastic in a quick attack. However a playmaker that dosnt score alot of goals will never win the big prize.

As superb a footballer as he is, Özil isn't much of an athlete, especially stamina wise.
AVFCforever1991
Yeah I thought he always took him off around the 75/80 min mark because he always looked like he was about to pass out from exhaustion... gharperr
too lazy to ever be worlds best. Lazy how? We dont see him in training. And hes covered the most ground since coming back from his injury in the arsenal team. Pretty sure its a myth that hes lazy due to the way he runs/jogs when he has the ball and floats about when team is in possession However hard he tries to become the best, he just isnt gifted or "complete" enough to get there ahead of messi/ronaldo. Dont think its anything to do with workrate tbh. Theyre both on another level with messi being on another level to Penaldo Yeah I always thought he always took him off around the 75/80 min mark because he always looked like he was about to pass out for exhaustion... This is true Edited March 26, 2015 by gharperr
PaulC
Ok maybe lazy is wrong but whatever way you look at it overall his performances for Arsenal have been underwhelming. There was much criticism of him in the champions league game at Monaco when all the pundits thought Ramsey should have started instead of him.
