Shootouts are weird. If you get given a penalty in a game, most people consider it an almost certain goal. Players will fight for the chance to take it. But in a shootout it suddenly becomes a scary opportunity to fail.

Bet the BBC are annoyed that went to extra time, sure they had an hours worth of battle of britain, pride & passion stuff lined up, instead they get 30 mins of walking pace extra-time, uneventful shootout and now 10 mins of build-up while everyone has gone for a drink/piss

Will be interesting to see if the rest of the rule changes are actually enforced.

Quote
  • A softening of the rules around denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Refs may now book players instead of dish out instant reds if the fouls aren't dangerous or are accidental.
  • An extension of powers to before kick-off, so refs can now send a player off before the game starts.
  • Players can now receive treatment on the pitch instead of being forced off to the sidelines
  • The IFAB have also approved a two-year trial period of video technology to assist referees, to be used in four cases: to determine if a goal has been scored, red cards, penalties and mistaken identity.

Rule change. You used to have to kick it backwards, no you don't.

It will not be long before someone catches a keeper out and just smashes a kick-off straight in & wouldn't be surprised to see a few more teams adopting something like an american football style onside kick off with a few players starting a run just before kick off is due to have an edge in pace

Leipzig did something similar a couple of years back but something like this now with only one player needed and being allowed to kick it forwards could make for some adventurous & overwhelming early attacks if people are brave enough.

It's a pointless change though

It was a quick fire rule change that was made to look like something was actually decided at their annual conference, in reality 99.9% of the time was taken up asking "what the **** do those extra refs behind the goal actually do?"
