Oh, and there was no other thread to put this in so I'll drop it here but there were a bunch of other friendlies last night.

In case you needed to ask, yes, that is Fernando Torres.

great ball, beautiful first touch ... lack of goals - Spanish football team just like Fernando Torres.

What is the defender playing at.

He looked to see who the striker was, realised it was Torres and decided just to wait for the goal kick.

Think some are being a bit harsh on Rooney. He gets into the side because he's absolutely brilliant for United, not because his name is Rooney.

that shouldn't happen though.

Or rather, i suppose it should happen. But our managers should have the balls to not use him if he doesn't perform when given the chance.

The thing is though that Rooney has the potential to do the job. If not him, who plays? There really aren't many goal threats that we have.

But he hasn't shown it for England in how long? Sterling is the real deal and Sturridge and Lallana are in great form. Their records for goals and creating chances have been phenomenal this season. That leaves one last spot in the front 4. You could have an argument that hes worth having in the team instead of Welbeck or the others but the problem is that once you put rooney in the team he immediately becomes the focal point.

You're proving my point though. Rooney has, again, had a very good season for United contributing to 34 goals which is very impressive in a pretty poor side. Saying he shouldn't play is suggesting you only pick players based on their England form - of which Lallana and Sterling have literally done nothing in an England shirt and Sturridge has barely played.

It's a mixture of both though. Your club form should get you picked. Your national form should get you dropped.

If you keep picking somebody and its not working, it doesn't matter how good he is for his club. He's not great at national level.

For Lallana and Sterling its totally different because their club form is all you have to go on.

If sterling has a wonderful season next season but is consistently woeful in an England shirt then he shouldn't keep his place in the England team.

Similarly, if a player is going through a bad spell of club form but bangs in a hat trick every time he plays for England then he should be picked regardless.

Its not black and white. Its discretion. A manager should be capable of that.

Rooney warrants a place in the squad because of his club form and his ability.

But if he stinks out all the warm up games and, for example, the first group game, then he shouldn't remain in the starting XI just because he's good for United.

Hold On! Rooney has scored quite alot of goals for England...nobody can be honestly suggesting he shouldn't be playing?!

So did Gary Lineker. Should he be playing?

The argument is, if you're not playing well, you shouldn't be in the team just because you've played well before

I'm not saying Rooney should be immediately dropped. Just that if he takes his current form into the World Cup, Roy shouldn't be afraid to leave him out or sub him off.

Iv said for ages Rooney shouldn't be playing and it reminds of Mata at Chelsea. Both seemed to play the game differently to the rest of the team and drift from their positions too much and kind of slow the game down.

England have pace, should set up to play compact tight defensive football and counter attack. Quick attacking full backs, Sturridge, Sterling etc. Would be much better and will work v better teams at the WC.
