$200 Million Takeover

I'll get shot-down in flames for this but I think the most sensible thing to do to take us to the next level and to compete in the big league is to form a single team in Birmingham and take over the scum. It would take 1-2 generations but in the longer term it would unit the city and give us regular crowds of 55,000 and for big games into the 70,000s.

The team name would be a merger of the two clubs; Aston Villa from our side and FC from BCFC giving us Aston Villa FC!

Would probs have to be Birmingham United if you want the whole city to be under one team...

It hasn't been doing the rounds since the 70's. In fact the NASL folded in the 80's.

Since the emergence of the MSL, football has grown in the US. Coaching, womens football and the quality of mens football have all improved drastically, as has the interest in the game.

Lets face it, Americans own sports are garbage aren't they? football is far more exciting & is gathering momentum at a rapid pace. Like it or not, there is far more disposable cash & multi billionaires on that side of the pond. It seems logical that they will want to invest in their own league & do a "Man City" job.

The US has long been touted as one of the next superpowers of world football but whether it will actually happen or not is another matter. For the record I think football will be big there one day.

Considering that 20 years ago there wasn't even a top flight league in the US, it's most likely just a matter of when. MLS is already making the NBA and NHL look nervously over their shoulders. But NFL and MLB will still reign supreme for a good long while still.

It will be another 30 years before the USA is good enough to win the World Cup and MLS considered an elite league.

Anyone who needs to know why football will never be big in America should watch the film/documentary 'once in a lifetime', about the NASL and particularly the new York cosmos.

MLS is growing at a fast pace in the USA. Average attendances are now at 18,000k  and the TV rights that are up this years are expected to attract big money.

It's the largest growing sport in the USA, and eventually expected to become the 2nd biggest sport in America, behind the NFL.

Don't forget they have a huge and growing Latin American population, who obviously love (real) football.

There's no shortage of capitalists in the States so it's no surprise they want a piece of the pie.

So much so that they're hardly played in other countries around the world

Baseball is played in more countries than cricket.

Basketball and ice hockey are played in more countries than rugby.

At the end of the day, football is the world's sport, everything else is a niche sport in comparison.

Sorry for going so far OT

From a financial aspect, football is probably the yanks best bet.

They've tried to export their own "football" with very limited success.

Proper football is now very big over there & will continue to grow. I wonder how long it will be before the Beckhams are playing there in the prime of their carreers instead of at the twilight?

The 70's were a LONG time ago...so much has changed since then, it makes your head spin. The infrastructure and demand for football in the US is set in stone at this point. NASL was poorly conceived and poorly executed. It was packaged as a gimmick and always had a short shelf life.

Cricket is a bigger sport worldwide than baseball is.

Would class American sports as NFL & baseball. I would also throw cricket into the "garbage" bracket.

I don't class either ice hockey or basketball as exclusively American sports.

Basketball was invented in Massachusetts. Ice Hockey is American insofar as the top professional league for the sport has always had a majority of US clubs (Boston, NY, Detroit, Chicago).
