andykeenan
Owen Coyle has been sacked by Wigan, as owner Dave Whelan reacted to fan power an hour after a home defeat. Latics lost at the DW Stadium on Sunday for the third time in a week this time to Derby - and some fans turned on Coyle after a horror first half-hour when they conceded three soft goals. The Scot was summoned to meet Whelan for crisis talks afterwards
VillaChris
I thought he was going to be a great manager at one stage. He was a realistic candidate way back in 2010 I think. Did brilliantly at Burnley and initially at Bolton and always seems to pick up talented loan players who he advances. The reality is it was always going to be a big ask with them being in Europe which is unusual for a championship club. Plus Wigan as a club aren't really that big compared to a lot of championship clubs like Forest, Leeds, Derby etc, all clubs with bigger support. I wasn't convinced when they went down they'd come straight back up, if they win their spare game they're only a few points off the top 6 still. Cliffy Biro
Well thats ridiculous, i can understand saying buck your ideas up in the nest 3-4 games or we'll have to have a serious talk but 16 games into a 46 game season with a new manager is far too early unless you're rock bottom or something. VillaChris
They (the two of them) weren't keen on him due to the burnley and Bolton connection.
Isa
They have such a strong squad by Championship standards that there is no excuse for them being where they are.
The Fun Factory
Is this offical? The night of the long p45s- flitcroft, jol, jones and coyle. Oh and O'Driscoll the other day. Wigan fans should shut the fudge up and enjoy the european ride and FA Cup glory. Edited December 1, 2013 by The Fun Factory
Mantis
What's that, 4 managers that have been sacked today and yesterday alone?
Cizzler
Four months is not long enough. Coyle has had a bad week, but as others have said, Europe with a Championship squad is tough. See how it affected Newcastle's fortunes last season and they have far better players than Wigan. Martinez lost 8 on the bounce, once. Obviously their 7 fans didn't like Coyle's previous Bolton connections and hounded him out at the first opportunity. Hope he finds another job soon and am pretty sure he will. Rovers13
Wigan spent a lot more than most championship clubs though, and coyles record at Bolton was worse than steve Kean. He's just not a great manager, and was a really dumb appointment in the first place. Having said that, 16 games isn't long enough.
StanBalaban
Fan power at Wigan? Didn't know it was possible for one fan to have such an influence at a club. Fan power at Wigan is just Dave Whelan listening to his reflection in a puddle.
parisvilla
Poor manager who was never a good fit at Wigan imo. They have a very good squad for that level but performances and results have fallen well below the level the fans and Dave Whelan could rightfully expect. 8pints
I think it's because he gave us back Albrighton.
Rovers13
What's lost in all this is that the most bipolar manager in recent memory, Steve Mclaren, looks to be doing one of his great jobs currently at Derby, not one of his many nightmarish jobs.
