BMW with a late entry into the “Ugliest car of the year” competition.

BMW X7 2022

What happened to BMW? Used to make lovely looking cars from the 70's to the early 00's.

Now, they are just gaudy.

Off to pick up my car - never had a new car and I’m super nervous and excited at the same time. I’ve only ever driven old cars so any knocks (which never happened!) wouldn’t have bothered me. This though!? 😬

I've only had a new car once - a Merc. Nothing flash, just a C-Class saloon. Was delivered on the back of a low loader with just 13 miles on the clock. I was like Driving Miss Daisy for the first couple of months.

One evening at home (summer, so it was still light), me and my Dad were chatting and we heard a smash and crunch. The elderly next door neighbour had reversed his old Ford Escort into it and ripped off the front bumper and part of the wing! I don't think i'd done 1000 miles in it at that point!

There’s so much wrong with that car it’s hard to put a finger on what is most wrong.

Jump in the Lupo to drop the girlfriend home and fill it up. The car doesn't have central locking, so to unlock the door its old school key turn. Passenger lock won't turn. Great. Ok.

Get in and pull the door handle to open the passenger door. Fine. Turn the ignition. Runs like shit instantly. Engine check light on. **** hell. Running absolutely terribly, figure I'll get the girlfriend home, there's 4 petrol stations in a couple of miles, it should make it, it is running it's just massively down on power and juddering and shaking. Every junction is fun, trying to get on a busy fast roundabout is terrifying. So decide to go to the station with the least junctions to get to it. Get to that station, no fuel. Ok... Go to the next nearest one, only diesel. Shit. Go to the next one. Finally get petrol. Fixes nothing.

I feel like my Lupo wants to retire for Christmas.

Management light flashing under acceleration?  Juddering and shaking when you put your foot down? Erratic idle? Tapping/rattling noise from the engine block?

Yep, i'm a relative expert on it now! :D Had two ignition coils go in 3 months. The last one had the added smell of eggs (sulphur) as the catalytic convertor was having to work extra hard!

The issue is finding a garage that will see you. I got lucky with a cancellation. Other places were saying mid January!

The 4 series was one of the best looking cars on the road 6/7 years back (when I had one 😜)

Still got some looks but they're seemingly tried their hardest to ruin it, going back to small grills next year apparently

Hmmmm 🤔

😛

They're a mile away from the lovely E30 shape - loved my 325i. The blue E46 328i in the background was owned by me for 8 years as well (was parked on the neighbours drive - yes, the same neighbour that clattered my Merc years later!)

Both cars now scrapped/written off

A friend of mine picked up his new car and pulled off the forecourt straight into the path of an oncoming vehicle that totally shanked his side.

If you think about it he first journey in a new car is quite a dangerous time.

Sorry, is that a car or a hearse with a spoiler?

I've only recently had the coils replaced so I'd hope it's not that...

Could be a faulty one?

Or could be a knackered spark plug underneath a coil.

Are they still under warranty?

I’d take it back to the garage being unhappy the coil pack they fitted has failed.

Best case, they apologise and repair it under warranty.

Worst case, they tell you it’s not the coil pack it’s something else (and therefore you’ve got it diagnosed for free).

I weep at what they are worth now in some cases

Yep, this 325i Sport went under the hammer for a patently absurd £51,187 at a Silverstone Auctions sale in Birmingham last weekend. The result eclipsed Silverstone Auctions’ upper estimate of £35,000, following a bidding war between two rival punters
