This game will tell us how this season will pan out. Its funny how most of the narrative from our victories against Fulham and Liverpool was how bad they must be rather than maybe how good we are now. It seems reminiscent of 95/96 when we beat Man U 3-1 first game of the season most of the narrative was how bad Manu were and how”you win nothing with kids”.That season we finished 4th won the league cup and got to the FACup semifinal.The season before we narrowly avoided relegation,we finished 18th and the next 4 teams were relegated. That summer we made 3 or 4 key signings (one being the visually impaired Southgate).Traore is Savo still not sure if he was good or not. Sounds familiar . When ever Villa have done well it’s always been a surprise,mostly to Villa fans.Our midfield now of a fit McGinn,Luiz and Barkley must be one of our strongest ever.

Players currently who are ahead of Jack in Southgates mind Sterling Rashford Mount Sancho Foden Greenwood Calvert Lewin (on the left) Lord Lucan Jack only got in this squad due to covid breaking and indiscipline.He has no intention of playing him again Jack has to keep performing for us and public opinion may force him to at least put in the squad but he will never start and he won’t be in the Euro’s squad unless a plague descends on all the English attacking players.I think it’s better to accept that now that be disappointed when it happens. Southgates policy at the moment is ABG (anybody but Grealish)

Most pundits now seem to want Jack to play(the exception Danny Mills) Watching England under Southgate I now find depressing.I actually want the opposition to score to speed up his demise something I have never experienced before.We have had players that were overlooked before but none so obviously suited to international football.Some of the tackles that Jack endures in the Premier league can’t happen in International football,referees are much stricter and so teams will find it harder to stop him. We could field a very strong attacking team but Southgates tactics are too cautious and negative.Jack won’t start tonight and I will be very surprised if he comes on as a sub.He doesn’t fit into his team set up as a player and as a person. Only good thing is the tide is turning against Southgate more and more people are question his style of play and maybe he will be gone after our inevitable disastrous Euros.

I have always been a believer in Smith since he took over.There was a moment after the a Leicester defeat that’s thought he would never be successful because we were so easy to score against. He has proved he can learn and adapt and defensively we have improved hugely.I don’t think we have conceded from a set piece since lockdown which was something that needed addressing. Smiths problem now is our expectations are now much higher.We have a fantastic first team but if Grealish,Mings,Luiz or Watkins gets injured we have weak replacements.I hope we stick by him even when we inevitably start losing.

Gareth Southgate was asked about Jack after the game he apparently said he thought Joe Gomez had a good game. This is the greatest game we have played for over 25 years. In fact the game it reminds me of If when we beat Manure 3-1 at start of 94/ 95 season ???You will win nothing with kids! The season before under Little we just avoided relegation but he made 3 or 4 crucial signings and we were transformed.Seems very similar.Martinez just oozes calmness,Cash is an up grade on Guillbert,Watkins is a menace and his holdup play is fantastic and Barkley can carry the ball out skilfully and is the big physical presence we have been crying out for. So proud of everyone today but especially the owners for sticking with Smith.I think we have a top quality manager.

I am not sure if all issues can separated into right,left and centre where Brexit is prime example.People can talk about Labour moving to the left or the right to me it’s not important. Labour needs to find policies that are popular and will allow them to win elections.They can make principled stands on issues and watch the Tories win elections. Starmer is trying to reposition the party to make it more electable.One big issue Labour needs to address is whether we retain our nuclear deterrent.There are many good arguments foe getting rid of it due to its expense and its hard to imagine a scenario where it would be used. But popular opinion is strongly for it and a nuanced argument about its merits maybe difficult to sell. I don’t think a party will win an election advocating disarming.

Great to see this again.Withiout him we probably wouldn’t have been promoted.That stare is brilliant He was brilliant for us that season and it’s a shame he was injured while Heaton was out last season.We should be appreciative of players who have been with us a long time who maybe don’t play a lot but make massive contributions when they play. Reminds me that Soleskar was invaluable to Manure as a sub they could bring on when they were desperate.Dont think he started that many games.I remember David Geddis In 81 only playing a few games but getting some crucial goals,against SHA ??if my memory is right. A club who wants to be successful needs back up players who when needed deliver.

I think we can rule out Newcastle finishing near the relegation zone. I have been very impressed with Wilson never really paid much attention to him before he has pace and good skill.They have bought well Hendrick and Lewis look solid.The have pace upfront and with Carroll aerial power and Bruce always sets up quite defensively as we know. West Ham look crap only good player is Antonio.Is Rice one of the most overrated players ever?I expect Moyes to be one of the first managers to be sacked.

Juventus had an incredible line up. My main memory is the way they kept the ball,I don’t think we touched the ball for the first 30 minutes.In the second half we played much better.

Jack looked like he belongs at this level.He has always had talent but yesterday I saw confidence with a bit of arrogance which all great players need.He did more in his short cameo than Sancho did in 2 games. Phillips who I think is a good player looked like a rabbit in the headlights especially in the first half.To give a cap to someone with no premier league experience is crazy.How comparable is the championship to international football? The good news for us is Jack looked sharp and if he performs like he did last year Southgate is going to be under a lot of pressure to pick him again. Jacks best hope of a prolonged run in the England side is not by moving club but when Southgate is inevitably sacked.

Really pleased for Jack ,now I don’t need to support Iceland and Denmark. I didn’t realise before that Jack was part of the squad that Southgate managed when we won that U21 tornamment in Toulon in 2016. Funny squad actually Hause and Targett were also there.The only player to really progress from that team is Pickford. It seems Jack started the first few games and scored a couple of couple of goals but then played very little.I think something happened at this tournament between Jack and Southgate and that explains why he has been very reluctant to pick him.Considering the season he has just had it was ridiculous to not pick him.

Mason Mount has 6 England caps.Can anyone remember him doing anything while playing for England?I can’t. I know he is a talented player but I can’t think of 1 thing he has done for Chelsea this season maybe it’s because I don’t watch other teams much.Maybe I have missed his brilliant goals and assists. If Jack can’t get into this England squad the other players must be absolutely world class and if we don’t thrash Iceland and Denmark then the manager must be shit. In the words of Keegan I would luv it luv it If either of those teams beat us.

Ricky Gervais I can see how some might not like him. But for me he is brilliant.I think he is very brave as a comedic writer,he often touches on issues like rascism ,suicide and disability but carries it off because it’s very funny and is presented with care.The comedy feels very much on the edge and if he gets it wrong it could be the end of his career. For me he is doing something different in these shows not following the accepted norms.The characterisations are very strong for example Gareth,Finchy In the office and the therapist in Afterlife and ultimately and most importantly they are funny.

Baffled by the decision like everyone here. His ability to run and dribble with the ball from deep lying positions is unique.None of the other midfielders can do that. I remember in the World Cup semifinal against Croatia and we were getting tired and overrun in midfield Jack would be the perfect person to come on in that situation.Who did we bring on ?Lingard and that sums up Southgates thinking.Workman like players who don’t take risks. Gascoingne was the last England player who was happy to run and dribble over distance(he also did a lot of dribbling after the game) It might make more sense for him to stay after this.He won’t be getting into the squad if he’s not playing regularly .

Fergie was very selective about who he gave the hairdryer to.Not all players will respond to that.If you want players to take a risk with the ball either in attack or in defence you don’t want them to be scared.People don’t often work at their best if they are frightened or nervous. If you look at Liverpool under Klopp those players are giving their all not because they are frightened . Always loved that documentary about John Sutton the Orient manager 92/93 where he would routinely scream at his players.One time he offered to fight a couple of them and advised them to “bring their dinner with them”because the fight would go on for a long time.It was really effective half time talk they were losing 2nil and went on to lose 4nil.

I have been very impressed by their rise in the last few years and I think the manager will eventually manage a big club. What I hadn’t realised is they have actually spent quite a bit of money.They spent 110 million last summer and 100 million the summer before.In 2 years in the championship they spent 50 million so this is no Sheffield United .The Mendes link also allowed them to loan highly rated players before they bought them. Just wonder if the strained relations between China and Uk is going to affect the amount their owners will be allowed to invest in the future.

Would agree with all the points above he has talent but lacks bottle,work rate ,belief and is poor defensively. Most of these things Trezeguet has if only we could mix the best of Trezeguet and El gazi and you would have one of the worlds best players.!

I am concerned if the Sancho deal doesn’t go through they will come after Jack but not sure if they need himafter the success of Fernandes. Cant really see where else he could end up-Man City,Chelsea and Liverpool have strength in his position. Do Arsenal or Spurs have the money to buy him? I think for his career he would benefit from 1 more season with us.Hopefully if we strengthen well in attack it will help him as he won’t feel he has to do everything.He will play every game which might not happen if he goes to one of the big 6 and he should get the England cap he deserves.

To me whether they were socialist or partly socialist isn’t really important,they lost. We currently have the most unsuitable,untrustworthy prime minister I have ever known.Who is responsible for this? Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters must share some of the blame.Did anyone really believe that was going to win ? .We have discussed 1983 election when Michael Foot was labour leader,did anyone really believe he was going to win ? If Labour wants to be a protest movement where people stick firmly to socialist views and the members feel they are not selling out then that’s fine if it wants to win elections it needs to look at history and change.

Sorry I did get carried away with the word decimated.Some of those elections were close but Labour lost and the Tories won and formed governments. 1983 manifesto was definitely very socialist in fact it was described as the longest suicide note in history . Kinnock was a lot closer to socialism than Blair but that’s not saying much.For me Ed milliband in 2015 was pretty socialist. In those elections where they weren’t very socialist but still lost could they have won them with more socialist policies?
