  1. On Sunday he apparently completed 10 passes in 70 minutes of football. That is mental for a central midfielder and indicative of one of the biggest issues with him which is relying on moments - which are becoming fewer and fewer by the week - and not actually being involved in games for the duration of them. Love the guy but his shortcomings are becoming harder than ever for the team to work around.
  2. The treatment Emery got from the media/social media when at Arsenal was an embarrassment. Definitely was an underwhelming tenure from him, but following Wenger at a club that was massively lacking in direction was always going to prove an insurmountable task in the short term (as Arteta went on to show) and it's not like he didn't have his moments anyway. His achievements speak for themselves and yet he was written off as a joke because he said the word "evening" a bit funny when speaking in another language. We'd be lucky to get someone of his standing in the game.
  3. We're essentially as useless as we were for Smith to get sacked except Gerrard doesn't have anywhere near the same amount of credit in the bank.
  4. These quotes come after openly acknowledging he's had to go back to basics to save his job and after significant investment to improve on the situation he took over from that he cites to defend himself. You'd swear he was two weeks in the job. Some of this stuff is embarrassing.
  5. Thank god. I'd resigned myself to the seeming fact we were losing this beautiful man.
  6. Love Dougie. Great to see him more confident in his English now. https://www.avfc.co.uk/video/0_z771yq3z
  7. To add to this, I saw it pointed out that Villa's last 9 Premier League goals - which stretches as far back as last season - have all come from different players. It doesn't really suggest there's any proper patterns of play being implemented if the goals are spread out so scattergun.
  8. "Continuous improvement in results, performances" rings loud right now. This guy isn't even a coach for christ sake, can we cease this Purslow vanity project for the sake of us all.
  9. The great irony here being that when you only rock up being patronising in this thread once every few months at select moments it kind of proves the point that he isn't as shite as you insist he is.
  10. Folk who try to downplay the quality of our squad presumably also don't rate the likes of Almiron, Jacob Murphy, Joel Ward, Jeff Schlupp, every Bournemouth player etc, yet I'm watching them most weeks benefit from good coaching and raise their performance levels. This is literally Gerrard's job.
  11. I'd have more time for the "he needs time" shouts if there was a an obvious style or philosophy that was trying to be implemented. As far as I can tell though, after having a year to do that he's instead gone backs to the wall in order to cling onto his job. Doesn't exactly convince me personally.
  12. For all the talk to the contrary, Bentancur really is proving to be a better player than Bissouma.
  13. Said it before, have no doubt that the loan will benefit him but I really think he's good enough to be involved already. Such an impressive player.
  14. It's probably been mentioned but for what it's worth I fully agree with Marsch criticising Villa for killing time in the first half. How on earth have we sunk to a level where we're wasting time against Leeds at every available opportunity in the first half of a game to maintain a 0-0 scoreline. Genuinely embarrassing.
  15. I'm not one to normally get particularly partisan about Villa, especially when it comes to getting hung up on history being relevant in the current day. It did strike a cord with me though when Neil was saying how dare he constantly speak down upon this squad/club though. This guy is utterly blessed to have this job and should be aware of such, literally every aspect of underperformance is at his door and it's not good enough to point blame at the players and rely on whatever coach he's brought in to solve it for him on every single occasion. I've wanted it to work but it's gotten pathetic.
  16. I just don't understand how we can sack Smith given the supposed expectations yet persist with this.
  17. Behind enemy lines in the home end today. Would appreciate Villa doing something worthy of making me worried about giving my cover away. Not going to happen but I wouldn't mind seeing something like: Martinez Young-(Bednarek or Chambers)-Mings-Augustinsson Dendoncker-Luiz Bailey-Buendia-(Coutinho or Ramsey) Watkins
  18. Good managers can make teams better than the sum of their parts, we see it all of the time and if nothing else you can see a stamp being put on a team quite quickly in terms of identity etc. It's mad to me and worrying that he's had this long in the job but is coming out with comments like that.
  19. I think he'd be a pretty big loss tbh.
  20. Seen it mentioned that when you watch this it makes you wonder where on earth the ability to play like this has gone.
  21. Put Cash's and Young's skillsets together and you've got a pretty faultless modern full back.
  22. No Luiz My word, all he did was help the midfield look infinitely more competent than usual against the best side in the country.
