  1. Said it in the McGinn thread but specifically who wears the armband isn't a huge deal in terms of leadership for me as players who have those qualities can still demonstrate them, for example I don't believe Mings will suddenly not be one of the leaders on the pitch just because he's had the captaincy taken from him, so in that sense can see the merits in relieving him of the burden of the title to allow him to just do so naturally and focus more on his own game. However giving it to McGinn is just something that worries me for what is to come. Love the guy and on his day he offers so much, but the problem has often been that even when he's had a great game up until say the hour mark only to become knackered, successive managers now have almost without fail left him on the pitch and we've subsequently lost control of games, or just generally been less effective. The guy needs more competition for his place, both in terms of starting games and potentially getting substituted. The last thing needed was a title that seems to suggest the exact opposite of that will be the case.
  2. I generally don't really care about who specifically is captain as ideally a team will have several good leaders who can share the burden, but I'm not a fan of this move as it suggests McGinn will continue to be an almost guaranteed starter that rarely even gets subbed off. And I say that as someone that loves the guy.
  3. I love Mings, he's probably my favourite Villa player (reasons beyond purely football included, granted) and I think gun to my head I'd have him and Carlos as our best CB pairing, but I don't think you can begrudge anyone saying that Chambers hasn't at least made a strong case for himself to be honest. Think it's just largely based on the merit of his recent performances.
  4. Such a shame how much the injury curtailed him last season. Put in an excellent performance for Villa against Barrow and followed it up with similar in the U23s and looked like he was going to start knocking on the door, the loan to Stoke came at a good time and they were loving him by all accounts until he got sidelined. Seems the excitement for him has dwindled a tad since but hopefully it just gives him the freedom to express himself at Cardiff and be able to show his worth over a full season.
  5. I didn't call anyone out, just said I was stunned to read it. It was only a week or so ago and not with anything factual to back it up, more so just saying people were delusional to believe otherwise lol. I too was concerned about how much he appeared to be running in quicksand, but the notion that he wasn't fast or that it didn't matter that he was proven to be rapid previously because it was in a different league was...interesting.
  6. It was more that he apparently wasn't fast that had me stunned. Said with so much confidence too.
  7. Mate, it was quite clear it was being said in jest. It's an internet forum dedicated to a middling Premier League team, if we can't have a laugh about silly things then what's even the point in putting ourselves through all of this.
  8. A head coach that not only doesn't coach the squad, but doesn't even speak to them either.
  9. Keep reading. (Just kidding, it was indeed tongue in cheek. Although I would take it if offered obviously)
  10. I know the season ended as a bit of a damp squib but it was the same with Leeds in the season they came up. Even before the wheels came off us a bit and we were having a great season up to that point it was apparently lessened somewhat because Leeds were having a good season of their own, which despite Villa having no control over outside of two games against them was unacceptable lol. Might be controversial but I'd take Villa finishing 4th this season even if you told me that it meant Forest would end up 3rd.
  11. Are Forest the new arbitrary team we just pick out as a point of comparison for no reason? If Villa have a good, successful season then I really don't care what other teams have better ones.
  12. There's metrics for the likes of errors, miscontrols, dispossessions and so forth provided by FBRef though which would quantify what you're talking about, all of which Konsa had more of on average last season than Mings did.
  13. I also don't see it being a likely way we line up, just would like it to happen as it's a way of at least somewhat naturally including a few of our better attacking options rather than forcing this Watkins/Ings like at the expense of two of Bailey/Coutinho/Buendia. I do think it might be more of Ramsey's game for now to be in the mix for one of those positions, but it falls down with McGinn who Gerrard will almost certainly persist with. Of the two formations he usually plays I'd rather he stuck with the 4-3-2-1 as it gives you the option of being able to play Bailey and have him offer a bit more pace and directness than we've often had in those positions. He's got 5 goals/assists in 8 games there under Gerrard apparently.
  14. Found the shape interesting at times, was quite asymmetrical for a period with Bailey wide right, Watkins as a striker but Buendia as a 10 with McGinn covering slightly wider on the left (where for what it's worth I think he looks a lot better on his more natural side than when he plays RCM). Tim sitting and Luiz more of an 8 with more license to roam and link things up.
  15. The user name lives another day! I wouldn't mind something like... Martinez Cash-Chambers-Carlos-Digne Luiz-Kamara Bailey-Buendia-Coutinho Ings?
  16. Yeah, Coutinho puts up similar numbers on that front as well, though I agree it's more Buendia's game. I meant more so scoring himself as obviously playing a great pass still requires the person on the other end to finish the job. Granted he's had a couple of dud moments in a Villa shirt but I would generally say he has the better end product and ability to score out of nothing.
  17. I think Buendia contributes more overall in a game in terms of defensive output, upping the tempo of attacks etc, but Coutinho has a higher ceiling when it comes to end product and is more likely to pull a moment out of the bag to win you a game.
  18. From any source I could find both of those players were more expensive than Buendia was. Tough comparison in any case given they were signed to slot into one of the best functioning sides in the world.
  19. I like McGinn and Ramsey individually but I don't like them playing together in the same midfield. Neither of them look after the ball well enough and we just lack control in games when they're making up the majority of the midfield. I think it's night and day when you have someone like Luiz playing with Kamara, the movement and passing become much better and you're suddenly not constantly turning over possession by being forced to lump it forward or leaving players completely isolated.
  20. I'm past being encouraged by this sort of thing because it's no different than what he's said before yet here we are. I love that we've signed Coutinho and think he's a great player, but if we're playing a system where only one of him or Buendia can play, and the latter is in better form, then he has to play over Coutinho. The same goes for McGinn and Luiz or whatever other examples there are. The point of having a good, competitive squad is that quality players will occasionally miss out, and hopefully in turn will be forced into making the most of the challenge and forcing their way back in. Not saying it will be the case this season, but I'm hoping we're not going to get a situation where sound bites like this happen one week only for his favourites to be straight back in the next.
  21. Is it still delusional to say he is even slightly quick? I'm praying he keeps that up and makes himself undroppable, apart from the obvious reasons because it'll also make sure that this 4-3-1-2 stubbornness stops.
  22. If Buendia isn't then Nakamba certainly isn't either. I think a large issue for us beyond just the formation is that two of the midfielders in McGinn in Ramsey - for all their other strengths - are not comfortable with building the play, keeping things ticking over etc. It makes us awfully easy to defend against, especially in this formation where you don't even have proper width to utilise. Players like Kamara, Digne etc who can look better are getting completely hung out to dry by it and Nakamba only makes that worse given he's possibly the least comfortable in possession of the whole squad.
  23. This was my issue with folk thinking it was just a Luiz not being a 6 problem last season and that signing one would solve it completely. There were plenty of examples last season of Luiz being left in situations that no one player is dealing with when so exposed and as much as they also need addressing I really don't think this shape and general set-up aids it.
  24. Just there Coutinho drops to get the ball and when he turns he had about 4 players all stood in a line, not looking for the ball so he has to try a hopeful one to Ings that he has little chance of coming away with. I know we've had some results with it but I just think this formation is so limiting at times.
  25. Really hope he can make a success out of his career even though it won't be at Villa. He had a great story as it was but the injury just makes you root for the guy even more that he can turn it around.
