Definitely get mesh heads. But even the most expensive kits ... Don't expect a genuine real acoustic sound, you just won't get it.
Also, check the mesh heads are at least two ply otherwise they'll just keep breaking.
I have an old electric kit called a Traps kit which is basically a variation on an old Arbiter flats design. The advantage is I can whip the mesh heads off and replace them with real heads and bang I have a real playable kit. I think some of the more expensive kits out there can be switched into being an acoustic kit of sorts.
Personally though... I hate playing electric kits. Never found one I like, I just can't be dealing with them. They just never respond like the real thing, they never sound like the real thing. And yes, I've had a go on recent £4k plus efforts at music shops. But for a bit of a bash they're ok I guess. I'd rather get a cheap small acoustic kit myself for the same money.
