  1. Let's get this straight... VillaTalk/Twitter doesn't rate McGinn, but most Villa supporters do. I love him and think he would be much better in a different system than Slippy G wants us to play in. He's also not a defensive midfielder and his best games for us had him pressing very high up the pitch to both win the ball back and/or run in behind the opposing defenders. He was one of the best midfielders in the Prem before his injury in our first season back in the top flight. Since then, he's been asked to play a different/deeper role by both Smith and Gerrard, which holds him back from what he does best.
  2. Nobody really wanted to talk about this being a huge factor in our "over achievement" last season. Our defense was fantastic without fans there to distract them and the players could play like they did on the training ground.
  3. This 100%... I remember an interview with Grealish the season Targett joined. Jack said something about Terry joining the boys for training matches when they're shorthanded during International breaks and how he is still a great player in his retirement. He also said something about Targett confiding in him that "They spent 13 million pounds on me and Terry makes me feel like I'm a Sunday league player!" No self confidence at all and it shows in his play. If he makes an early mistake, he can't recover, especially when the crowd gets on him.
  4. I would be disappointed if we signed both of those two... It would be underwhelming if after all this talk of expanding scouting and analytics at the club and we end up getting fleeced for two overpriced and overrated players from clubs a level below us. Considering we were in the mix for Bentancur and have been pretty heavily linked to both Kondogbia & Kamara by some of the more reputable continental journalists shows we're looking for players at a level above Bissouma/Phillips for similar prices.
  5. This sums it up for me. Our football is incredibly dull and uninspired... We're now a counter attacking team, who can't break down other teams who counter attack and also look fragile in transition. We played Palace's game yesterday. They let us come at them, knowing we have all our creativity on the bench (minus Coutinho), which is why they looked so much more dangerous than we did with the ball. Gerrard is a clown. It's frustrating because if he swaps out 6 players from the first team squad we had yesterday with his own signings this summer and we still lack an identity next season, he won't be sacked immediately. We need a manager with experience and some guile. TBH, I would throw a lot of money at Mourinho, give him as much money as FFP allows for to build the squad, and allow him 5 years to get into the Champs League without any meddling from the board.
  6. Go... Hope he takes Gerrard with him.
  7. Would love it if Leeds were relegated, but would pass on Phillips. I don't think he's anywhere near as good as some make him out to be.
  8. They didn't drag on... We had a budget, we made inquiries/tried to negotiate, then moved on to other targets when we were priced out. When all our CM targets were not available for the price we wanted, we held off on signing anyone last summer and decided to try again in the future. It only looked like we were screwing around because the army of fake ITK journalists seemed to think that we were just negotiating for weeks on end when the announcement wasn't made.
  9. Maybe we don't need a brick shithouse midfielder to be a good defensive player?
  10. He's been off the pace recently, but TBH, so has the rest of the team. How much of this is down to Gerrard's dreadful habit of chopping and changing tactics and how much is due to Coutinho's own motivation? I'm more inclined to place the blame with Gerrard's system... When you try to play out the back and have no plan B to counteract a high press other than boot it up the field and hope Watkins/Coutinho/Bailey can win the ball in the air, turn, and run at multiple defenders, it's no wonder we look dreadful going forward.
  11. Gerrard needs to go. The guy is out of his depth as a Premier League manager.
  12. Watkins is Gabby with a better work ethic... Just a lunkhead who can't finish and makes terrible decisions.
  13. Glad to see we've spent the last 2 weeks working hard on the training ground... Pathetic
  14. Most haven't watched him very much... He isn't even a 6, he's an 8 who is awful going forward.
  15. I was optimistic a year ago. Now? I'm jaded again... Same old Villa.
  16. Is everyone still crying about Targett leaving? From what I've heard, we forced Newcastle to pay us a massive loan fee and the 15 million pound buy clause makes this essentially a swap on paper of Targett for Digne. Targett sitting on our bench instead of Ashley Young was never going to be the determining factor of whether or not we'd make a push for Europe. Digne is a huge upgrade on him, but unfortunately Slippy G's tactics aren't showing us the best of him. Hopefully we'll see him a bit more of what he is capable of next season.
  17. Some still think he missed to many goals for us in the Championship and "isn't good enough" for us. I would have rather spent the Ings money on Tammy, but I probably would have bottled the rest of the window!
  18. I love Deano... Favorite manager of my entire 16 years following the sport and supporting the Villa, but that bridge has been burnt. The board would need to throw big money at a Mourinho-type appointment, promise to give him 4-5 years without any interference with the squad, and a war chest as big as FFP allows for. The money and foundation is there to take this team into Europe for a proven elite manager... We know our owners have the ambition to get us there, but it will take a much higher profile proven manager than Gerrard or Smith lead us on the pitch.
  19. Yeah, this really puts it into perspective. He is criminally underrated, but is starting to get noticed by other clubs because of his Argentina performances, and if we could sell him for a world record fee, or close to it, it would be hard to pass on. TBH, I'm not sure we'd spend it wisely to replace him and further strengthen the squad. All of our purchases this season have been underwhelming for the amount of money paid for each and how many goalkeepers did we go through under NSWE before we found a good one? Nyland, Kalinic, Heaton, Reyna.... We were buying a keeper every window before Emi... Gerrard also doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence...
  20. Watkins is Agbonlahor with a work ethic. He runs a lot and has pace/stamina but his finishing and footballing IQ leave much to be desired. Last season's goal tally was a fluke. Should move him on this summer and get what we can for him back.
  21. I mean... Most of Villa Talk only watches Villa play and rate players based on how they perform against us, which is why we had so many clamoring for us to buy Vagner Love, Shane Long, etc. because they played blinders against us but were generally shit against everyone else.
  22. It's starting... Have a feeling a lot of our players will be wanting out this summer after witnessing the trainwreck Gerrard has turned out to be. Everything we've built over the past 4 seasons is about to be gutted because Slippy G wants "his" players. Reminds me a lot of my Detroit Lions... Had the best team in my lifetime as a fan, with the team finishing in the playoff spots, who had a talented roster and just needed a good coach to take them to the next level... Hires a new Coach/GM combo from the Patriots who talk a lot about "winning mentality" and "tactics" but start throwing players under the bus the following season when results don't go their way. Three years later, all the talent on the roster is completely gutted, we have the worst defense in the entire league, and our clueless coach is still going on and on about "culture" and "character" of certain players, while he's delivering some of the worst coached football I've ever seen. Had to start all over again from the ground up the following season with a whole new regime... Hopefully I'm overreacting, but I'm starting to see a lot of parallels with Villa and Gerrard here.
  23. Part of the reason why most players loved Deano because he wouldn't throw them under the bus in his pressers. The buck stops with the manager, and this one is garbage. Can't wait to see him dismantle the team this summer...

Earlier on this week, I was getting laughed at by many on here for saying he's our weak link. Continuing to get found out. Take your Claret & Blue tinted glasses off. He's not good enough to be a top half Prem defender.
