    The mood among large sections of the supporter base simply isn't sour. The people who are moaning now would be moaning if we won the Champions League. It's absolutely fine if you don't want to give him any credit for the direction of the club at this stage, he's been here 5 minutes in executive terms. But you can't then also slam him for having achieved nothing. What should he have done? What would a significant success look like at this stage? He should absolutely be judged on what he does at Villa, his past record has simply earned him the opportunity to do the job and perhaps some patience. But I feel like a few on here have decided that he's failed before his first assignment is due.

    Your argument here has gone completely off on a tangent, but you're just wrong on these points. The 76ers went from one of the most forgettable teams in the NBA to one of the biggest during his time there, they're now perennial contenders with one of the best players in the league. Their rebrand under his watch is one of the most universally lauded and successful rebrands in professional sport, notably bringing a classic aesthetic into the modern era in a way that probably hasn't been done as well anywhere else. He's been here for 7 months and we're a point off of top of the table after 17 games. If you're not going to give him any credit for that, fine, but you can't then slate him for having done "absolutely nothing" either. We're absolutely humming under his watch. If he's here to oversee a brand refresh, and it does seem like that's why he was hired, he's arguably the most qualified sports executive in the world to do it. Surely we can give him a crack at it without declaring him a failure before he's done anything?

    I think this is unfair. American sport honours tradition like nothing else, occasionally to a fault. There is a repeated theme with criticisms of Heck that he's American so he won't get it, but look at the big 4 sports over there. While they have plenty of brand new stadiums, they also have a lot of historic old teams in very old stadiums that they've stayed in because it's important to the fans. The rebrand Heck did for Philadelphia brought a classic aesthetic into the modern era to basically universal acclaim. It showed a clear understanding of what the fanbase wanted. It's worth giving him a chance here.

    I don't think that execution is a home run, but i'm generally positive moving forward. The colours are perfect and I can absolutely see a branding package that I love with this as a component.

    I think that particular measure is heavily influenced by the fact that that the PL bottom 3 are quite weak this season. If we do another arbitrary measure and say the gap between 1st and 14th (and I've used that because 14th was the bottom of my phone screen when I loaded the table), Premier League 18 points Bundesliga 23 points La Liga 25 points Serie A 22 points Ligue 1 22 points If we do 1st to 8th for the teams on the hunt for Europe, it's Premier League 11 Bundesliga 15 Serie A 15 La Liga 17 Ligue 1 13 Now admittedly this is also heavily influenced by the weaker bottom 3 or 4, but I think it reflects that there are less easy games in the Premier League. There's more teams with genuine CL aspirations. People may say that PL player values are overrated, but the extra money in the league all the way down makes a difference.

    I think comparing European results isn't really comparing the strength of the league at all. The best teams across the big leagues are roughly even. Where the real strength of the premier league lies is in it's depth. The lower half of the league is very good comparatively and it's supported by the clearcut best 2nd division in world football. I'd argue that the top end of the premier league (bar Man City with infinite money and no rules to play by) has been hurt by the league being so competitive. It's harder to attract the elite level of players when you're in a huge battle each season to even qualify for the Champions League, when players can just waltz over to one of the top teams in basically any other league and all but guarantee themselves a CL spot. The counter to that is that PL teams are generally more battle hardened because there are very few easy games at PL level.

    Agree with this. Everyone wants the rule changed until they're on the wrong end of a 95th minute winner where an opponent has a massively fortunate bounce off of an accidental handball. I think the current system is actually ideal despite it resulting in a different set of rules at each end of the ground. Nobody wants to see penalties given away for incidental, accidental arm contact, but nobody wants to see goals scored because of arm contact either. I'd absolutely support indirect frees for accidental (under the existing definition) arm contact in the box, with penalties only being awarded if the arm contact blocked a direct shot.

    Gotta hand it to Everton for their response to the points penalty. Some incredible spirit. They've seemed a bit like 2015 era Villa over the last couple of seasons, just circling the drain, which was sad for us and is sad for them as a top flight mainstay. Dyche has got them all pushing in the same direction and getting results.

    A lot of recent years Man City were so far ahead of the competition that it was barely worth running the league. I feel like it's a lot more competitive this season, there's no runaway favourite at this point of the year. Man City would still be title favourites now and they've already dropped more points than they did in one of their title winning seasons. I'm not arguing that we won't have to play out of our skins and have a lot go our way, but i'd hope the club fully believe they're in a title race and play accordingly.

    I don't get the argument that we're not in title winning form. We're 2 points off top almost half way through. It's a tight season in the toughest league in the world. Liverpool are the only team meeting that 87 point watermark at the moment, and there are 2 teams within 2 points of them right now. If we're not in title winning form, nobody is, but they're going to hand out a trophy at the end of the year anyway. Our projected points tally of 83 would have won us the title in 8 premier league seasons. I'd argue the final tally might be lower than it has been in recent seasons because there are a bigger spread of very good teams who will be nicking points from each other than in previous years. The big test is obviously the back half of the season where our regulars are sore, tired and have niggles and Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal can replace those players with players worth 5-10 times what our replacements are worth.

    I'm really not sure how it's Delph like. Delph left about a week after saying he was staying. Grealish just maintained he was a Villa fan, and still does. Plenty of players who would call themselves Villa fans play a lot of their career away from the club, and the one recent notable Villa fan who spent his entire career here is wildly unpopular.

    What do we play football for again? As Villa supporters we should know better than anyone that times like these can be fleeting. Champions League football would be absolutely wonderful and we might get there, but it isn't automatically a golden goose that ensures sustained success. There are plenty of clubs who got there and couldn't sustain it. Leeds, Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham, Leicester. We sacrificed cup runs under Martin O'Neill to focus on the league and it got us nothing. What are people going to remember in 30 years, away trips against Atletico Madrid and Lazio, or John McGinn lifting the FA cup?

    If we'd won a trophy in recent memory i'd be voting for CL qualification, but we just have to hoist a trophy. It's been far too long.

    Sin bins are totally unnecessary. I do like that only the captain can speak to the ref though, the crowding of refs in football is a disgrace. But if they breach it, just give them a yellow, they'll learn pretty quickly to cut it out.

    His little touch to set up his strike was sublime, gave the keeper absolutely no chance. Quick feet and incredible skill. He's a brilliant striker when he's confident, and that self belief is sky high at the moment.

    What a win! Made the required adjustments and turned the game around. Tielemans was terrific but I think the shape just worked better. Could have been a couple of extra goals either way.

    He'll get some sort of fine or ban for this, but I wouldn't change him for the world. His legacy in Argentina is already absolutely enormous.

    I make no apologies for getting a bit emotional at thinking he might retire. Mings is my favourite player in the 25 years i've been following the club. It'd be absolutely gutting to know that injury ruined his career just as we appear to be taking off.
