This topic comes up from time to time and I can only quote what conditions were like where I worked (YOI). No Sky , no access to internet , TV in pad ,games thingy (X-box or similar) if they can afford it and behave themselves inside. Access to well-equipped gym. So - unless they go to Education or have a job,(wing cleaner etc), they could spend all day playing games or watching tele - which is what they might have done 'on the out' anyway. I'll leave it to others to judge whether that is too 'cushy'.

Sometime ago, there was a "Linda McCartney" sponsored cycling team. The riders had to sign a contract agreeing not to eat meat and were provided with ample supplies of her products. They, as a team, performed pretty well in big events so I am guessing that you do not need meat to survive. Am not sure that meat digests that easily - hence endurance athletes go for pasta etc before events As a conclusion to the "McCartney" team story; when Linda McCartney died the team had to fold and were owed wages of some £70K. Mr McCartney didnt want to know and would not contribute !

Spot-on post ! It does seem that "Cav" is not as media savvy as some other sportsmen and in cycling I would suggest Chris Hoy is better at speeches etc (and a damn good cyclist!) But I thought Cav spoke from the heart - although have a slight bias towards cycling of course I would suggest it is the same in football; even the great Sir Ron Saunders didnt always come over as well as others - could be perceived as being a bit taciturn (IMO of course) but still the greatest manager ever to have walked the Earth !!

There was recent case of a bloke up before the Judge on a Paternity case. There a far too many people,in my opinion, given the sobriquet "legend", "national treasure" etc but to any (older) pop music fan Jimmy Savile really was. The BBC website reports that he started his career as a Radio 1 DJ; this is tripe; he was a DJ on Radio Luxembourg before Radio 1 was dreamt of. His programme "Teen and Twenty Disc Club" was essential listening for the youth of the 60's (me !) He was also a keen cycling fan and I met him at a fund raising dinner in Bradford. Although a tad on the eccentric side he was a really down-to-earth geezer and chatted to all the blokes there. Ran marathons, as Rodders said, for Stoke Mandeville; top bloke. RIP

Well although I can't stand U2, I listened to Mr Shears track with an open mind. It reminded me of Tammy Wynette and had all the energy of one of her numbers. In the early 70's,we used to play at a'rock pub' on the corner of Navigation Street which was then called The Alhambra. When the band had finished playing, the manager would play some appalling dirge, at full volume, on the house PA to encourage the audience to leave. That track would have worked wonders. (only IMO of course)

Absolutely awful news - that damned cancer again; makes one realise how fragile we all are. Will never forget that 'Bothams Ashes' series and the part he played in it. I think it is Snowychap who is a Worcs fan and, if so, he will no doubt recall the big part Graham Dilley played in their resurgence. RIP
