  1. I realise that this may be taking the thread OT, but with all the success of British cyclists in recent years (Olympics + TdF) do VTers view racing or club cyclists any differently on the road ? Are we still perceived as a 'nuisance' on the road or are people more tolerant now. I know riding side by side irritates some motorists even though I think it is accepted in the Highway Code when safe to do so. Proper club cyclists should single-out anyway if a car comes up from behind. In France, they view cyclists very differently and give me plenty of room on the few occassions I have ridden over there.
  2. Yep - looking forward to Road Race on Sunday; am told Nicole Cooke doesnt have great form so may be difficult for her to do well. Cav. - well lets hope so ! Did anyone see the interview with Tony Martin after his victory ? Firstly, he was really modest and said it was good to pass David Millar who is a good time-triallist in his own right. Secondly, all these damn cyclists seem to be able to speak at least two other languages - poss French and English; didnt the erudite 'Gazza' belch down the mic when being interviewed in Italy or something like that ? Wonder which team Tony Martin will go to next year .
  3. NOW we are in with a chance ! Convincing win over Notts and one game to go; the County Championship is in our own hands. Last match - Hampshire who will be fighting to stay up, so between us and the bread-stealers (lancs) now I think. Weather could play a big part though.
  4. That's a damn good idea; can the mods do that easily? If you are in the U.S. Levi , any rumours about RadioShack's future ?
  5. Excellent news that ! If Cavendish goes there, it will be very interesting next year - notwithstanding a number of riders will be involved in the Olympics. La Vuelta - one of the Big Three Grand Tours. (Why do the Spanish always pronounce "V" as "B" - why dont they just spell it with a "B" ! The other day one 'Dan Martin' won a stage, he has his nationality as Irish but he is in fact from Tamworth ! His Dad, Neil Martin, was a very classy road man and is married to Stephen Roche's sister -hence the Irish connection . Just in case you wondered like....
  6. Time for Taylor to come to Warks ! This may increase his chances of playing for England. I read that The Bears were interested in Keedy; What you think Milfner ?
  7. Yep, Ireland pretty good so far; but they are bound to be as they have Warwickshire players in their side The ground looks packed; I had no idea cricket was so popular in Ireland, (I know they like their bike-racing tho') Anyway-Jonathon Trott. No,perhaps not ideally suited to this form of the game but hasnt played for some time and (I guess) was in at no. 1 to anchor the rest of the innings. Got a few more than Bopara - how many more chances is he going to have ! To hear that cheating northern monkey Atherton talk, you could be excused for thinking Trott got a duck and ran-out 2 team mates in the process.
  8. What is that expression; snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Bloody awful result; our big overseas signing has made an inauspicious start. Would rather have kept Jeetan Patel ! Planned to go down this afternoon but will watch Tour of Spain instead and hope Cavendish wins the stage.
  9. Yoooooooooooo Beeeeeeeaaaars Got Hampshire at 77 for 6 at Lunch. So far so good.
  10. Blimey Danwichmann - I know him ! Racing cyclist from Ludlow Cycling Club.
  11. Absolutely ! Durham played 2 more games than us and we have 1 game in hand over teams above us. So..down to Edgbaston with missus on Thursday for start of 4 day game; only thing is - it is against Hampshire who got that massive score the other day and have just beaten Durham. Rest of fixtures:- Yorkshire - away Notts - home Hants - away Wonder if we will get Sir Ian back for any of those?
  12. Bit of sad news. Old(er) Bears fans may remember Neil Abberley. Well it seems that he has passed away at a young age too - only 60 something. I think he ended up playing in the Birmingham League - Moseley perhaps Good tribute from Ian Bell. RIP

    Running

Although it may seem a bit early, I am anticipating winter training already ( for bike-racing). However, the roads over he last 2 winters have been too damn dangerous and I am contemplating more 'jogging' -cant really call my efforts 'running'. Tried it a couple of times last year - not very far -perhaps 2.5 miles but pulled a muscle in calf and had to stop. So am thinking of going to Bourne Sports in Stoke for some 'proper' trainers - am told they can put you on a treadmill. Is this likely to be worth it and what price range would you look at. Cheers
  14. Cant agree about Carberry or Hampshire; they are our last fixture away !! County Championship might rest on the result of that match Good to see a mention of Bears old wicket keeper Geoff Humpage. He used to work for "Sportsco" - (remember them) in Walsall.
  15. Yep, great result for England and another great result is possible for The Bears against Wankashire - excellent performance from Neil Carter to put us in a strong position. Agreed about the 'youth' of the Engalnd squad and there is another player who appears to have great class - James Taylor of Leicestershire. I think I heard Warks have made enquiries about 'buying-up' his contract; reckon he would be a great acquisition. It may enhance his England propects moving from bottom of 2nd Divison to top 3 of the 1st.
  16. Well very briefly, a group with all the favourites got away on one of the big climbs (Izoard ?) Andy Schlek jumped away, with about 15k to go I think and won on his own. However, an incredible effort by Thomas Voeckler enabled him to stay in Yellow - until tomorrow at least. Cadel Evans did nearly all the work in chasing Andy Schlek and deserves tremendous credit too. Frank Schlek took second place 'cos he hadnt had to do a tap with his brother off the front. I think Mark Cavendish was docked 20 points for finishing out of time and is only just hanging on to Green  Oh and Contador got dropped in the last 5k so he is possibly out of the frame now. You cant discount Evans for this race as he is a better time trialist than the others (I think) and can climb damn well too. (and the Villa won and Keith Barker got a century for Warwicks)
  17. So you are in Luxembourg ! You may know that Luxembourg produced another famous climber (and TdF winner I think) called Charley Gaul. But you may have to be 60ish to remember him. Bit of a legend I think but became a recluse.
  18. An interesting simile; so perhaps more of a Jane Austen/ George Eliot fan then :winkold:
  19. I wonder how long it will be before someone suggests that 'The Illuminati' are behind all this ! It is starting to sound like something out of "Atlas Shrugged" - anyone read that ?
  20. Yep, I reckon Voeckler should get more credit; he is no slouch in the hills but it may come down to how much his(relatively) weak team can help him. It seems the French have been suggesting Cav had a tow up the hills yesterday, perhaps hanging on to a car or something. They arent the greatest sports are they, particularly when it comes to Le Tour ! After all, they were and still are after Lance and we all know he is clean. (lights touch paper !) Another great win today and Green Jersey must be a distinct possibility now.
