  1. Don't like boxing but guess Ali (why is this often pronounced Ah Lee) was a good boxer - indeed an Olympic champion IIRC and seemed to have low BMI and was very fast for a heavyweight. My Grandad was a boxing fan hence I sometimes watched it. He didn't like him either - thought he was too arrogant. But then if you had asked him who was "the Greatest" he would have said George Cummings ! However - I don't think anyone has mentioned the huge slice of luck he had fighting Henry Cooper. When Cooper caught him with that punch Ali certainly didn't know what day it was. Wonder what would have happened if the bell hadn't saved him. I don't know if it is on Youtube but if you ain't seen it have a look. Greatest sportsman - never !
  2. Hmm. From my experience (albeit at a low level in the music business) there is a lot of snobbery between those who can read and those who can't. Also, between those who can read "the dots" and those who just read the chords. I think you can get by if you read the chords;drums don't have an equivalent so I had to (try) and read the drum dots. As mjm says' it is much harder to read a part that some 'bird' singer drops in front of you 20 minute before you are going to play it and expects you to read it like Buddy Rich. I believe The Beatles couldn't read the notes and I'm guessing Stevie Wonder would have been limited(that is not meant to be insulting btw). If you can do it then it is a huge advantage - no doubt. A little story - many will have heard of Mark Knopfler - rock guitarist. When he was still at the top, Steely Dan wanted him to play a session and were surprised to find that he couldn't read very well but was a very good guitarist.
  3. I would like to consider this from a purely academic standpoint. So - having drawn on my vast knowledge of Economics including:- marginal propensity to save, water and diamonds theory, Taylor's Scientific Management, the Multiplier, economic rent and transfer payments ; I conclude that ....... If the bastard Cameron supports it then it is good for his rich mates and bad for the rest of us !
  4. Possibly a Freudian Slip by this lady ?
  5. This topic comes up from time to time and I can only quote what conditions were like where I worked (YOI). No Sky , no access to internet , TV in pad ,games thingy (X-box or similar) if they can afford it and behave themselves inside. Access to well-equipped gym. So - unless they go to Education or have a job,(wing cleaner etc), they could spend all day playing games or watching tele - which is what they might have done 'on the out' anyway. I'll leave it to others to judge whether that is too 'cushy'.
  6. Ah, Chindie's reply shows just how much I know about Criminal law - as opposed to Civil law. Yes, what you say makes complete sense when applied to the case to which I referred. The low-life who murdered were unarmed ( could be important) and out of their heads on cannabis and booze. So probably didnt set out to kill anyone. A can of worms indeed.
  7. Sometime ago, there was a "Linda McCartney" sponsored cycling team. The riders had to sign a contract agreeing not to eat meat and were provided with ample supplies of her products. They, as a team, performed pretty well in big events so I am guessing that you do not need meat to survive. Am not sure that meat digests that easily - hence endurance athletes go for pasta etc before events As a conclusion to the "McCartney" team story; when Linda McCartney died the team had to fold and were owed wages of some £70K. Mr McCartney didnt want to know and would not contribute !
  8. Spot-on post ! It does seem that "Cav" is not as media savvy as some other sportsmen and in cycling I would suggest Chris Hoy is better at speeches etc (and a damn good cyclist!) But I thought Cav spoke from the heart - although have a slight bias towards cycling of course I would suggest it is the same in football; even the great Sir Ron Saunders didnt always come over as well as others - could be perceived as being a bit taciturn (IMO of course) but still the greatest manager ever to have walked the Earth !!
  9. Yep, well deserved and good to hear him give credit to his team again. Good for the profile of cycling.

    Ghosts

There was recent case of a bloke up before the Judge on a Paternity case. He denied that he was the father of the child and the Judge asked him who he thought the father could be, as the accused had been seeing the lady for sometime. He replied that it must have been a ghost. The Judge told him that was ridiculous and had anyone in the Court ever had sexual intercourse with a ghost? A bloke from Walsall stood up from the back of the Court and said, "yes Sir, I have" The judge asked incredulously, " You have sexual intercourse with a ghost "? " Oh Im sorry sir" said our man, "I thought you said goat"
  11. No, sorry Mr Mooney, that doesn't count ! Don't think that is a proper snare drum
  12. "Driving Home For Christmas" Chris Rea. Some tasty chords in this number.
  13. Right, here is my definitive response to Cameron's decision, based on my vast knowledge of macro-economics based on intensive studies into the works of Keynes,Friedman and a touch of 'scientific management' from Taylor thrown in for good measure. "If it is advocated by Cameron, it is undoubtably good news for his rich Tory mates and bad for the rest of us - and probably all the fault of Teachers anyway" (all vast knowledge gleaned from 'Nutshell' series of teach-yourself economics) - perhaps the same one Cameron read !
  14. Yes indeed, I had forgotten that re. the Test Matches. Blimey , I didn't realise that Chris Woakes and Boyd Rankin only had that left on their contracts ! A bit worrying if we do nothing next Season.
  15. "The Librarian"! Absolutely agreed - always liked this geezer ! I remember when he had long hair and looked like a hippy. Not a big spinner but great accuracy and damn good batsman. Most famous product of New Zealand just now - apart from Manuka honey
  16. Bollocks ! James Taylor, my tip for the last two seasons, has signed for Notts (at least it wasnt Lancashire!). He would have been perfect for Warks when Sir Ian was with England and the pair of 'em in the same team might have been exciting. I read somewhere that Warks couldn't afford to buy out his contract
  17. [quote="MrDuck Hussey still has something in the tank I reckon. 3 tests on the Sri Lanka tour and he scored 2 hundreds and a 95. Far too much experience and far too many runs to discard just yet I think.

    Groupon !

Apologies if this has been discussed on here before but has anyone signed-up and used this service ? Some of the offers, especially short hotel breaks, look like a real bargain. Opinions please.
  19. This sort of thing is quite common in the pleasant Midland market town of WALSALL ! Just the other day, a bloke was in Court for having sex with a Labrador. The judge commented, "How low can you get!!" and the defendant replied, "Well I had a Jack Russell once"
  20. There a far too many people,in my opinion, given the sobriquet "legend", "national treasure" etc but to any (older) pop music fan Jimmy Savile really was. The BBC website reports that he started his career as a Radio 1 DJ; this is tripe; he was a DJ on Radio Luxembourg before Radio 1 was dreamt of. His programme "Teen and Twenty Disc Club" was essential listening for the youth of the 60's (me !) He was also a keen cycling fan and I met him at a fund raising dinner in Bradford. Although a tad on the eccentric side he was a really down-to-earth geezer and chatted to all the blokes there. Ran marathons, as Rodders said, for Stoke Mandeville; top bloke. RIP
  21. I recognize Mark King of course and is the black youth with the old Precision James Jamerson ?
  22. Well although I can't stand U2, I listened to Mr Shears track with an open mind. It reminded me of Tammy Wynette and had all the energy of one of her numbers. In the early 70's,we used to play at a'rock pub' on the corner of Navigation Street which was then called The Alhambra. When the band had finished playing, the manager would play some appalling dirge, at full volume, on the house PA to encourage the audience to leave. That track would have worked wonders. (only IMO of course)
