  1. You shouldn't let things like facts get in the way of a good old demonising group identity, but then I suppose that's the problem these days with pandas...etc
  2. Oh, I agree, It wasn't a question with a sarcy tone behind it. Just a call out to the hive mind. I suppose the point would be in whether our allies are really that worried about that thing we ourselves have undermined for +20 years. And coming on the back of I wouldn't worry about the UN anymore type posts - and at a time in our society where the label "irregular migrant" seems to trump any human rights for refugees and so on perhaps we shouldn't be surprised at countries openly flouting International Law anymore. Fool me once and all that.
  3. I think it absolutely would, there are more suicides than homicides in the US gun death statistics
  4. The US used to colour their margerine pink in case anyone mistook it for food
  5. Wasn't the argument for Guantanamo and other torture's legitimisation that 'terrorists' weren't covered by the geneva convention?
  6. This is definitely my angle of thought on it. I mean I've done things which are recorded in official documents and some things in local papers, but they don't give a good picture of me in the slightest. As a person. Whereas here, if people were remotely interested they'd get a pretty good sense of what makes me tick, my likes, my dislikes, my politics and so on.
  7. To my mind, he (and all the other politicians whose policies and morality is maliable as long as they get some power) personifies a real deep rooted problem in our politics. They are as much gaming the system as all those doctors that renamed trollies as beds.
  8. 2 Macabre musings - If, upon death, VT becomes our most comprehensive individual epitaphs? and Whether to share user names in your funeral day programme? - that post where you shared your real thoughts on Auntie Mabels new fella etc
  9. Since my hiatus, when I've read the current batch of topics and press next unread topic I get flung to some interesting threads. Some of you might have realised this what with receiving 2year old reactions and such. Anyway, interesting thread to stumble across in the current climate. Worth a bump. Not enough likes to press on effectively every other post. Suffice to say I agree with the voices of reason. Also made me think it's a shame a few of the posters don't seem to frequent Off Topic much these days if at all.
  10. Murderous, apartheid state in not liking to be held to account for their actions shocker!
  11. I suppose that depends on whether you feel civilians have intentionally been killed or unintentionally, and whether you feel the destruction of civilian property is necessary or not, and whether you think it's the type of mass killing that flouts the definitions of proportionality / military necessity. We're certainly not privvy to the information that would be presented to any court, but then I don't recall any western army officials standing trial for the documented war crimes in the last 25 years, bar a few privates in abu ghraib. But in my opinion, Of course it is. Stick it on the tab
  12. fly, flying about, being annoying. MrsVM just stopped wiping the table, looked at the fly and said "You're not welcome here" and then carried on cleaning the table
  13. A mate of mine married an American girl and so Halloween is fun for me, just based on knowing that girl will be having the most fun day with her kids. She properly loves Halloween. It also means, more often than not we get to go to thanksgiving dinner at theirs. I;m doing pumpkin pie this year. When we all lived in Cardiff I'd drive over there to do trick or treating as a grown adult because she had a big bowl of treats in the hallway at theirs but no one ever did trick or treating and she thought we were all mad. She really really wanted people to knock on the door.
  14. It's certainly more fuel to the fire on the notion of our country becoming an ever more closed society. Some people genuinely seem to welcome the lurch towards the sanctity of Law, Morality and Religeon and away from the moral universalism that defines an open society.
  15. me too, just then. using that
  16. As mentioned elsewhere the other day, first band I every saw courtesy of my dad back in the 80s. Transfixed by the hairy drummer is my abiding memory. Basket of Light reminds me of the radiogram in my childhood lounge.
  17. out. but not out out. just out.
  18. Yeah, i was reading about this over the weekend. Apparently 'extremisim' isn't covered by existing legislation!
  19. Cars that dont have a spare tyre are bonkers imo. I only realised it was a thing when a hire car in America got a flat. Not a fan of the space savers either.
  20. I'm the other way on this. I mean I agree it's harrowing. But I don't need/want to see it. I'm quite content imbibing my daily dose of murder and genocide through conversation and in print.
